Kangaroo; We are still pretty fortunate out here in the county to be free of most permit restrictions and codes. Long as you own fourty or more acres all you need is a well and sewer permit. Nothing else requires any permits or inspections unless it is going to be a commercial venture, that's when the smelly stuff hits the fan. Tell me about a steel floor in a shed, I've never heard of that. Concrete is almost a luxury any more that's why the storage only end (40%) didn't get the concreet floor, just 8 inches of packed crushed limestone.(road stone, we call it here.)Frank.

EW; No, I'm not missing a limb, but cannot take a step without a walker, so a quick hitch is quite usefull to me.
KW; You folks probably get tired of me tooting the horn for Land Pride Equipment,(no, I don't own any Land Pride
Stock) but their quick hitch has an adjustable top hook that can be changed in seconds to fit other dimension equipment, no need to cut and weld on attachments. Deere of course wants their I-Match to only fit their attachments. To keep me from having to get off the tractor to hook up a PTO shaft their automatic hookup looks interesting, but not untill they get with the program and offer an adjustable top hook. Frank.

Iam; I think you have answered some of you own questions.
5500. in an old 560 that still needs a TA, paint, leaking lines, repaired all after you get the engine fixed is going to get out of hand dollar wise to the point you could buy a later model tractor that is running. I think I would take what ever it will bring and divvy up with the brothers.
Replacing the TA will cost you 7-900 depending on whether you want them heavy duty or standard version. If you haven't replaced one read the book completely before you start, the planetary gears all have timing marks on them that must be in time, etc. You can get a TA bypass kit that takes you back to the basic five speeds, but the bypass kit is I think around 500. all of this if you supply the labor.
I am not a big fan of three point mount backhoes, most anyone who has one or has had one will agree that they can tear up the three point hitch of a tractor pretty quick if you get a bit aggressive with the hoe. If you are handy with a welder or even if you hire a blacksmith to do the work I'll pass on what a neighbor of mine did. He bought a used Kelly three point hoe, put it on his 656 Farmall, used it once and took it off for good. He used some eight inch channel that he welded to the hoe frame, they extend forward under rhe rear axles of the tractor where he made a coupler of some kind that fastens the ends of the channel to the side rails of the tractor just behind the radiator. He backs the tractor over the frame, connects the front ends of the channels, then connects the three point arms to the channels with some chains, lifts it up to match some brackets on the rear axle housings that have a pin hole to match a clevis on the channel. He puts the pins in releases the three point chains, the hoe is firmly attached to the tractor. Frank.

Cando; As I posted earlier the gadget attachments are a bit rediculous. As you posted you have never owned one of these machines. We are on our third Gator an XUV. We had a traditional 4X2, they were a bit limp, then an HPX, lots better, but the new XUV is awsome. Don't knock one till you have had it around for a week. The Mrs. and I are both handicapped, we could'nt do anything around the farm without the Gator. Just last week it pulled two loaded hayracks several times, hauls tools, hauls rocks. hauls junk, etc. etc. Like I told Art a couple days ago about not trading three new Town Cars for a Shelby Mustang, it would take four Town Cars to get the HPX away from us if I couldn't get another one. I won't make any comparisons between brands, because I'ver never driven another brand, just Gators. Like the old guy on the TV commercial used to say "Try it You'll Like It". Frank.

I too am still puzzled as to why you need the stabalizers to mount the hoe. Yes the hooks on the hoe frame that the three point pins lift from must be correctly adjusted, but other than that there just isn't anything else to go wrong. I just mounted mine last evening, it came right up holes almost go past a bit, just back off the three point lever a tic and the pins slide in freely.
EW; You are correct to a point with your misalignment theroy. either one of the rear tires can be a bit low without any effect on alignment, soon as the three point arm pins grab the hooks on the hoe frame it lines it'self up instantly before it gets anywhere near the position to put the pins in the top holes. Front to rear level of the tractor, loader on the ground,in the raised position don't matter. if both front tires wer completely flat would be too much, but again this mounting system is quite forgiving unless you sit the hoe off in an extremely side lean positon which I did once, yes then you have a problem. I used to place some ads on another website for farm equipment. Everything seemed to go just fine, legitimate buyers or sellers till about five years ago. Since then most any ad I placed was answered almost immediately by someone from another country who would have his represenative come buy and leave me a cashiers check, counterfit of course, and haul away what I was selling. No thanks, if I want to give it away I'll give it to someone honest. My banker told me a while back all of the reasons that a cashiers check is so easy to forge, but I don't tremember it all now, he will not accept one unless he calls the bank where it was written. Twine size consistency is quite a problem. Years ago when we had an IH #45 square baler it would only tie consistently if we used IH brand twine because it did'nt have the thin and thick random diamaters like the lower cost twines did. Frank.

BigCCC; Welcome to tractor ownership. Either of the two will do the job depending on how involved you plan to become. 18 horsepower is still in the lawnmower class far as power, but does offer the standard 540 RPM power take off and standard Category one three point hitch, so lots of attachment can be used on it,(Tiller,Rear mount finish mower, Small bush hog type cutter, Blade, etc. It will do the job but not as easily as the 23 with the same impliments. You mention dirt work, the 23 is just a bigger more rugged tractor than the 1800, and I'll guarantee that the loader will get used on a daily basis for something from moving dirt to hauling anything from point A to B, plus I'm not a Kubota expert, (I'm pretty much a Green person, John Deere, but i think they offer a backhoe attachment too for the 23's. Lots of money can be saved by buying a 3-500 hour tractor that has a maintinence record that can be verified thru a dealership or by the prior owner. I'm not a believer in E-Bay type buying, just too many crooks with stolen merchandise to deal with, I know a person who paid for the same tractor twice by buying a stolen tractor on E-Bay. By far your best route to buying is from a Kubota dealeship. Depending on the age and condition of the tractor they may offer some warranty on it. Buying privately, be carefull whom you are dealing with especially if your knowledfge of tractors is limited, make them prove to you that the tractor does not have an unpaid lein, etc. so a good dealer is going to be a big asset worth a lot to you down the road. Far as price, I don't keep up too well on the prices unless I'm interested in buying something. Othere here can help you better with that. but in the end I think I would advise to go with the 23 or it's equivilant in a tractor from the big three, CaseIH-New Holland, Kubota, or Deere, they will be here for the long haul for service and parts down the road. Don't get stuck on a particular tractor just because it is the first ad you saw. Half the fun of tractor ownership is shopping for a tractor, check all three you may end up with sometning else you like better. Enjoy what you buy. Frank.

The first few years I ran the furniture shop it did'nt have a name, then when it grew into a real business it needed a name. Our oldest son suggested the Hardwood Shop, so that's where my ID came from. I found a woodworking website that I really enjoy, so when they asked for an ID I put in Hardwood. They came back saying it was already taken, so I guess the world has to put up with two of us Hardwoods. My Dad said most every German family in their neighborhood had a Pete, George, Charley, Nick, and a Frank, so I guess other than that being my Grandfathers name too is where Frank came from. Frank.

Dogbr; I'm not familliar with haw the Boomer shuttle control works, but likely pretty similar to my 4310 Deere W/12-12 Power Reverser, it has a slow/fast reaction time switch on the fender. Mine in the slow mode is also a bit too quick for my pleasure so I just kind of feather it with the clutch and don't even realize I'm doing it. I've got a tech manual for the 4310, but never took time to see if there is a fine tune adjustment for it or not. Likely someone more Boomer oriented than I can fill you in. Frank.

Candarms; Whatever year the 656 hydro came out my Uncle bought one, so that as kind of the family baler tractor. We had an IH #46 baler behind it. My Uncle milked 80-90 Holsteins, and we had a beef cow herd and all of us fed cattle, so LOTS of hay was baled. I had a new 656 gear drive a late 65 model and Uncle's Hydro was what ever year the Hydros came out. Both were gas engines. Gasoline was around 30-32 cents and after you got your gas tax refund back the gas really cost about .16-.18 cents per gallon, so not much concern was given to gallons per hour. On the baler the Hydro was neat in one way in another it was a hazzard. I like milloins other farm boys of that era have loaded a milloin square bales on the rack towed behind the baler. Working on a hay rack loading bales you liked a constant travel speed to keep your ballance, we learned real quick to NOT let an inexperienced person operate the Hydro on the baler because they couldn't keep their hand off the hydro lever and were constantly throwing you off ballance, so great on a baler, yes and no. We finally put my gear drive back on and ran in second just for that reason. Baling on the ground it would have been better with the Hydro, but we just did'nt do that, too much risk of rain before you got them picked up. We really did'nt calculate the fuel cost per hour to precisely in those days but the Hydro on drawbar work was like a size smaller tractor compared to my gear drive and took gas like it was free, so Uncle traded the "OIL JOB" as he called it for an 706 when they came out. Hodro's I'm, sure have been improved far as being more fuel effecient than they were then, but I just got a sour taste for Hydros back then and never liked them since. I owned Hydro combines since the 70's my last one was a 9610 Deere, the hydro was great, on a lawn mower they are great. I'd never owned a pickup with an automatic till the one I have now, an 07 Silvearado and almost hate the thing. I just like gears period. Another factor you have to consider is being from North Dakota you likely have lots of neighbors who are like me still 100% German. Germans are NOT stubborn, they are determined. Hope I haven't ruined your day with all my rambling on and on over sometning that really doesn't amount to a hill of beans. You like hydros, buy one. I like gears, I'll buy another one. My #48 backhoe could very well be functioing in 50 years. I just hauled my 1948 Cub Farmall home today after a complete engine/transmission/brakes/steering, etc. overhaul, the paint shop is it's next stop. It's 49 years old now and should go another 49. Frank.

Mostly; Just as a bit of a followup to my first post. If your goal is to save money and not give up performance the front wheel assist is not the option to delete, perhaps get a gear drive instead of a hydostat, I think that saves around a thousand bucks on a Deere. I don't even know the cost difference between a 2wd. and a 4wd., just ignore that and get the 4wd., you'll never be sorry. I can hear the hydro boys and girls already getting ready to tell you what a Wacko I am for not having hydros. I've already traded off two Deere 12/12 Power Reversers and not a word was ever said about them being less valuable than a hydro. Hydros are for lawn mowers and combines, not compact, or farm tractore, just a power parasite. OK boys, (And girls) deluge him with all the Hydro propaganda, but he still don't need it. Nuff from me. Thanks Murf; 95% of the time I'm never running under max load, so likely woudn't notice the slight losd of the little compressor. I think today would be a good day to test drive one. Weather person said 95 here today. Frank.

Stanley; First welcome to the form, we will do our best to help you out and I'm sure someday you can return the favor. I can't give you a brand name, but I once worked around one which had thw sideshift frame on the tractor three point like yours. The big rectangular shape frame that the hoe it's self fastens to served to let you move the hoe to either end of the frame to dig almost tight along and parallel to an existing wall. This had to be 30 years ago and I don't remember ever seeing one like it again. As I remember you loosend some big bolts and somehow manualy slid the hoe where ever you wanted it on that frame. I have wondered since if they had just made it to move hydraulicly what a feature that could still have been. Frank.

About 5 or 6 years ago this summer the local John Deere Dealer held a meeting to help farmers better understand what their rights and responsabilitys concerning the movemrnt of farm equipment on public roads. At that time our state DOT had two training officers who worked with trucking companies, farm groups or special permit load haulers, etc. It wasn't long into the meeting till the subject of "Gators" on public roads came up. Unless things have changed since the rule was, it must be a true farm type vechicle, (Gator, Mule, Kubota) these were considered farm machines, four wheelers were not. You must own or operate a farm. Drivers must have a valid drivers licence. Four way flashers, head and tail lights, turn signals were required. With those conditions met you could drive the Gator on any public road in the state of Iowa except an interstate. Just this summer I have met county Deputy Sherriff's cars and State DOT cars, neither geve me a second look. Like a neighbor who beat a ticked he got on his four wheeled on the road to do cattle chores on another farm put it, put a five gallon bucket or a scoop shovel in the back and they leave you alone even on a four wheeler. Things may be different now since this was as of 5 or 6 years ago. Frank.

DRankin; Yes you ae correct on using the counterballance recommendations in the owners manual for the FEL. I guess being an old timer makes me want to shoot from the hip too much of the time.
I kind of forgot about my personal contirbution of dead weight till you mentioned your 300lbs. of "Taters and Gravy", heavy shoes, hundred dollar bills, etc. I haven't calculated the percentages of my mere 280 lbs., but I think it is about 250 of "Me" and the rest is bib overalls full of enough wreches to overhaul a Buick and of course my wallet. Whiteturbo; I am NOT an expert on electronics, but being your symptoms seem to result from water being in the cab that you have a bit of water in the switches of the actuatior pedals. Likely when you incerease the engine RPM's and right after startup your alternator is pushing out a few more volts that overcome the resistance. It reminds me exactly of my 4310 E-Power Reverser. If it sits out in a heavy rain or if I get to liberal with the hose when washing around the E-Power Reverser lever it just won't work till it dries out. I never did have it checked out, I just make sure it is in the shed and keep the water away from the switch when washing. Frank.

Blueman; Thanks for your inquiry about Steve. Things aren't going quite as well as we had hoped. Even though no other cancers were detected in the MRI, the Doctors are concerned there may be others that are too small for the MRI to detect. The plan was then changed to start the high rate Chemo this coming Wednesday, then after four sessions at two week intervals the cancer would be considered killed, then the lung tumor removed. Unfortunately a week ago today Steve started running a fever caused by Pneumonia in the lung from lack of air circulation being the tumor is blocking an airway. Two different antibiotics were tried with no results so he has been hospitalized since Saturday with a 103 fever and still at the same level as of an hour ago. He is weak enough this morning that he can hardly speak. Frank.
