Mark; DO NOT resart the engine untill you have plugged the power beyond hose you disconnected from the backhoe back into the tractor. Your pump has no bypass with this hose disconnected and you will ruin it The owners manual to the hoe should explain and likely have some pictures to help identify things. Be carefull with any hydraulic lines that may be under pressure, sometimes you have to use a couple wrenches to loosen the coupler from the hose to relieve built up ressure before a coupler will completely plug in. Again please read your owners manual explaining the dangers involved with high pressure fluids being suddenly released. Frank.

Kangaroo: 15 feet of topsoil, WOW that is exceptional. How did it get there, the glacier, erode in from higher ground? By the looks of the picture I'd say you have abouit as much organic matter in the top foot as can be had, that's good. If New York rules are anything like Iowa, getting land back out of wetlands can be a tough deal, perhaps with some history and evedence of past agricultural activity on the land might help. You have a big job ahead to try to bring all the Muck Land back into production in one fell swoop, perhaps rent some to a neighbor for general farm crops and do maybe 2 or three acres to start. Three acres with a tiller is a BIG job. Frank.

Happyguy; If your friend told you the 4310 has 45 horsepower then better be careful of what else he or she tells you about the tractor. I have a 4310, they are a great little tractor, but about 32 horse at best. Frank.

Thanks for setting me straight on the sulkys behind the mowers. That makes me wonder too, how do they back out of a corner? I think I'll leave the seat on the mower and just ride along. Frank.

Homedog; I don't keep up on prices unless I'm in the market for something, but I don't think the package price you quote sounds too bad. I would however make a few changes in the equiment you are buying. First forget the ballast box and buy a three point hitch box blade with just the manual adjust scarifier teeth, I'd stick with a major brand like Land Pride, they cost a bit more but they are built heavier add quite a bit of weight compared to a fleet store brand, plus they are nearly indestructable, I haven't bent or broke mine in several years of tough use. It will serve the same purpose as the ballast box and it will amaze you with how much dirt you can move with one of them. Chief's advice on the MX5 is good, I've had one for several years and they are a tough machine. Careful as you may be you will still forget that hidden stump or stone that would likely destroy or badly damage a low dollar cutter. Deere also sells the lower cost LX series cutters, but I don't think they would be much better than a fleet store brand. Not knowing your age or if you have any physical limitations will dictate whether you buy the Imatch hitch. I'm big on Land Pride brand equipment so my quick coupler is a Land Pride, but regardless of the brand trying to push a machine the size of an MX5 cutter around to line up the hitch points is a struggle. I've seen some literature on an automatic Power Take Off hookup device that Deere has recently announced to further ease the hook up of PTO powered Imatch equipment like the MX5 or the tiller. I haven't actually saw one but it does sound intertesting. Frank.

I won't ad anything to Chief or Ihookem's comments, all good advice. I have a 4310 Deere, been a good reliable servant. The only thing I'll ad is a very breif rendition of my old sermon on dealers. Both brands you mention are good tractors. Don't worry too much about a few dollars difference you may save by going to a distant dealer or buying from a dealer you are not comfortable with. Both brands will eventualy break down and need routine service, that's where good LOCAL, RELIABLE, dealership will make or break your enjoyment of tractor ownership. Enjoy what you buy. Frank.

ihookem; In real hard soil conditions the reverse tine models tend to pull themselves into the soil rather than ride out and push the tractor. I've heard it said they work better in trashy soils as they tend to throw the trash up over the rotating tine assembly rather than wrap and plug. Frank.

Your prayers for our son Steve have also helped another member of our family. We got a call yesterday afternoon that our oldest Grand Daughter, (16), was involved in a traffic accident while riding her bicycle on the sidewalk along the street. A lady ran a stop sign at a high rate of speed "T Boneed" a pickup going thru the intersection dead center on the drivers door. The force of the impact threw the pickup onto the sidewalk where Jenny was riding her bike. The pickup struck Jenny and the bike throwing her about 15ft. onto a lawn, her bike ended up under the pickup as it landed on it's side on the lawn. By a miracle of God she suffered only minor cuts and bruses and walked on to band practice. The Fire Dept. used the jaws of life to extract the lady from her car and the man from his pickup, they we barely clinging to life. The police extimated that the lady had to be going a minimum of fifty MPH when she hit the pickup to throw a full size truck that far. We are so thankful for Jennys escape and also hope for the best for the others involved. Frank.

An Update on Steve's condition; Thank each and every one here for your prayers and concern, I've passed all of your correspondence on to Steve and his wife, they couldn't believe how many good friends I have here who are concerend for us. It has been determined that it is not "Lung Cancer" as such but a cancer in his lung. Today they did an MRI that included some radioactive element injected into his blood stream that would pinpoint any orher cancers in his body. No others were found. The Doctors said this is highly unusual as stray cancer cells normaly go to the liver or limph nodes before going to the lung. if they had found other tumors in other parts of his body they would have started high rate Chemo Monday, but being only the one tumor about the size of a chicken egg in his lung was found the new plan is to remove it then follow up with a low dosage of Chemo. So this was good news, your prayers are already at work. Frank and Lucile.

I think they used the same 404 engines as a 4020. have you had the oil cooler pressure tested. Leakage after shutdown can happen anwhere oil is on one side and antifreese is on the other. After shutdown you have no oil pressure but you still have water presssure. Have you saw any traces of oil in the antifreeze? Frank.

Woodie; Bvance is right, get a box blade and do it yourself. Most dozer guys around here now charge from the time they leave home with the dozer on the lowboy till they get the job done, reload the dozer and get back to their shop. That makes a small job like yours real pricey, you are paying him more for transport time than actual work done at the site. I have no quarel with their form of billing, have you priced a dozer, lowboy and a semi lately? You are correct in your plan to strip off the topsoil, move the clay around to the profile you want then replace the topsoil. Anytime you disturb the soil in a major way it will take a cou[ple years for it to settle and become as productive as you would like, but it will happen. Best of luck. Frank.

Joel; I've really never made a business of tilling small garden patches, just an occasional one now and then in our small town. It usually takes longer to get there than the tilling time involved. If it is a spot that has been a garden for years it will normally be rock and root free, those are the easy ones, a hundred bucks an hour for how ever long they want you to stay, usually fifteen to thirty minutes you are done. Be wary of someone wanting new ground tilled for the first time, no telling what you may encounter, rocks, roots, scrap iron, I've found it all just on my own property. You can't charge enough to come out unless the customer agrees to cover any damage to your machine. I learned some of this the hard way during my custom soybean combining days, always look the job over on a first time customer before you commit to doing it. Happy tilling. Frank.

Pitt MD; I'm a firm believer in following the owners manual to the letter. Kubota tractor=Kubota oil's and fluids, Deere tractor=Deere oil's and Deere fluids. We had quite a discussion on correct application of non Kubota/Deere/any tractor brand branded filters for their own tractors just a few weeks ago here, I don't remember what the title of the thread was, maybe another member does. I have my regular service done by the dealer now because of a handicap condition that keeps me out from under anything, but always did my own before. There is no better therapy than greasy hands. TC24; All the things you need, extra weight on the rear, the ability to remove it easily for mowing and light duty, plus your desire to do landscape work point directly to a three point hitch box blade. Liquid filed tires are to put it politely, A MESS. Factory wheel weights are pricey and hard enough to handle that once you put them on you won't want to take them off to mow. The cost of filling tires or buying rear wheel weights plus a bit more will get you a decent low dallar, (Fleet Store) box blade. Get one that is about 8-10 inches wider than the outside dimension of your tractor, that's big enough. I used mine yestersay and am always amazed at how much soil you can move in a little while. I used to have a John Deere Model 265 disc mower on a 1070 Case tractor,(100 HP). I have no idea how much power the mower really needed but the 1070 was more than enough. I don't remember how long the cutter bar was but it is pretty heavy when hanging out to the side, so a big tractor was OK. I had been trying to mow some Govt. set aside acres that was anything from brome to sweet clover waist high, with an od sickle bar that was worn out. Before I lost all my relegion the JD salesman happended by and told me of the merrits of a disc mower. I had never saw one before, he brought it down. Slow, Fast, Down hay, Mow in the rain, it didin't matter it NEVER plugged, throw rocks, YES, look out. I don't know if this is your answer but it sure saved my relegion. Frank.

Wow; This brings up memories I'd like to forget. First one was a McCulloch chain saw 25 yrs. or so ago. First new saw I ever owned, one of the wifes realitives borrowed it, you know the rest. About ten years ago after geting tired of old junker type trailers, I bought a new 25ft. beaver tail tandem gooseneck. It finally got to the point I had to hide it in a friends evergreen grove and lie to friends that someomne else was using it, so to solve that problem I sold it, and now HIRE someone when I need a heavy trailer, I've still got the junkers, funny, nobody asks to borrow them. The lending policy here now is that if God himself, (or herself, as I've been told by a lady or two), should stop by and want to borrow anything more high tech than a sledge hammer, YES, loan it to HIM, (or HER), but they are the ONLY ones need even ask. One of my sons said that being the only one at work to own a nice pickup keeps you real popular too, so he sold it and now guess what, he borrows mine, but maybe that's part of his inheritance. Rupert; It's real easy to get a box blade that's too big. It seems to work out best to have the width of the box blade exceeed the over all width of your tractor by 2-3 inches on each side, that's big enough power and traction wise. I'll kind of toot the horn for a landscape rake when it comes to moving and leveling gravel or soil that has been loosed up buy the scarifers in a box blade. In a landscape rake you could handle a 5-6 foot model to trim up your lane. The box blade gets the rough stuff done and the landscape rake will level things up for you, one machine compliments the other real well. Frank.

Chirp; I can't recall ever seing a belly mower on an 8N. Due to the basic low profile design of the tractor I don't think there is enough room under the frame to fit one in. Art can fill us in. Frank.
