Ronald; Yes, the common farm tractor tread, (R-1), that has the tall narrow tread bars that probably only cover like maybe 30% of the face of the tire are designed to allow the tread bar to penetrate the soil surfact and the face of the tire to contact the soil surface to support the weight of your tractor. They are by far the best in farm field conditions, but real nasty on front lawn conditions. R-4's, like you see on backhoes and skid loaders are designed with probably 60-70 % of the tire face covered by wide flat bars. They aere designed for the bars to suport the weight of your tractor. They are no match for R-1's in field conditions because the bars just aren't tall enough to get a "Bite" on the soil. There is a day and night difference between the two in road wear. Lots of back hoes spend a lot of time on the road from job to job, and skid steers whether on cement or not by their "Skid" form of steering abrade tire bars feal fast., It doesn't take much road time on R-1's to start to see severe bar wear, where as the R-4's with much more tread surface out live the R-1's by miles. Kotraed; Your Grand L is just a bit bigger than My 4310 Deere. I have a Deere MX 5 5ft. three pt. with a tail wheel. Depends on your needs, if you are just clipping pasture you could handle a 6 ft., if you are going out in 3ft. tall stuff then a 5ft.is big enough. The three point mowere are lots easier to back into a corner to trim up than a pull type, I haven't saw a new pull type in years, they used to be quite common before most tractors had 3 pt. hitches. The six ft. will be more clumbsy in tight quarters than the five footer, and if you have the loader off you may need a few front end weights for saftey. Far as brands go the Deere MX series, not the LX light duty series, is definetly an almost indestructible machine. Woods, Bush Hog, Land Pride, and Rhino also build good stuff, I personally am not a big fan of KK equipment, I kind of like to stay on the heavier duty side of equipment just in case that forgotten stump or rock suddenly reapears, but thats every bodys choice. I like Chevy's, you like Ford's, etc. Enjoy what you buy. Frank.

Mark; I'm too green in my choice of tractor brands to know much about the Kubots prices. Kubota builds good machines and has a top dealer network to take care of your parts and service needs for many years down the road. That said, and being I've kinda already shot my mouth off on another thread tonight about tire tread choices I will interject my thoughts a bit. Ask the dealer why he thinks turfs would be the best choice for you, possibly you have a special need situation that would make them more desireable but here in eastern iowa for all around lawn, loader work, road wear, light field work, etc. the R-4's probably out sell turf's by a 50 to one. My brother in law is a very devoted Kubota man, he wouldn't give my green ones shed room, so there you go. Enjoy what you buy. Frank.

Worst "Hillbilly Art" I ever saw was in a small town nearby, rigth at the curb on the "Main Drag". Old toilet, flowers in the bowl and tank, with two probably two by three ft. US flags with the poles rooted in the tank about five ft. tall in a Vee patern. That was probably the most repusive show of "Patriotism " I ever saw. Thank God it is gone now. Frank.

Randy, sorry but you are getting way ahead of my hlllbilly education. I've raised many thousands of hogs since the late 50's. Watch those side hills, I see so many, and I'll admit to being a bit guilty myself of sitting on the uphill fender to mow a ditch bank. A few years ago a friend of mine was mowing a steep ditch bank by driving up it than going around and repeating the same thing by going only uophill. For some reason he hit the clutch, it stsrted rolling backward, he paniced hit the brake and it went over backwards. he was lucky, a few bruses and scrapes. Yes be very carefull. Frank.

Harvey; That gets a chuckle out of me, If grease guns, pliers, 12 inch crescents, etc. would grow I'd have to take a cutting torch along to the field. Few years ago I bought two ten packs of grease tubes, some how the bag with them in got laid behind a rear tractor wheel. Nuff said. Frank.

My only comment concerns saftey. In my judgement a pto post hole digger is probably the most dangerous piece of equipment I ever had on a three point. In fact I bought one, used it a few times and sold it on an auction before someone got hurt with it. Please be extra carefull. Frank.

Mayo Clinic says I can't even go out of the house till May 29th. so my foot will heal. I enjoy watching the Mrs. mow the lawn. Our mower doesn't need blades, she mows so often that her tires just push the grass back down, then it grows a quarter inch, then she pushes it down again. The folks from PETA may come by and tell her that the misquitos don't have a place to live. Frank.

Art; In the time of the "H" and "M" there were a few H's pulling 3/14 in river sand and M's pulling 4/14 in the same aeria. In the heavy black soils where we lived the "M" struggled at times with the 3/16. Dad bought a new #37, 13ft. wheel disc the year they came out, seems like about 56 or 57, the "M" handled it pretty well in 3rd. but the "H" did'nt have a prayer. I've still got that "H", but after I restored it is too nice to drive, it just takes up shed room now. Frank.

Rich; I took a test drive the last week of March at the dealership, I did'nt notice any lack of brake ability, but can't say I tried to slide the wheels. The HPX I traded in seemed to have adequate brakes so I would expect the XUV to be as good or better. Has the dealer tried to correct it for you? I was so impressed that I traded on the spot. My dealer called this week to say that mine has been back ordered twice with a new delivery date of May 15th. He said they have been selling like hotcakes. Welcome to the form, and best of luck. Dan; Art can get lots more specific than I can on Kubota questions, but regardless of brand there are a few basic things about buying used. First, 18 years old and 1200 hours is a long way from being an old tractor, Kubota has a great dealer network that can supply you with parts and service for a long time. If you have little knowledge of tractors in general this can be depending on the price you pay compare to new a real boom or a real bust. How far are you traveling to buy this tractor, do you know the seller? 1200 hours is only 66 hours per year, were these hours all put on in the first couple years of the tractors life and it has sat in a barn or worse in a back yard since? If this tractor has set for years unused, be carefull, that means the fluids could have been in the engine and Transmission for 15 years, that is not good. I urge you to be carefull, this may be totally legitimate or it could be someone unloading a dresset up abused tractor, and also very important, make sure you aren't dealing with a stolen tractor, make the seller provide some proof of ownership, or take the serial number to a Kubota dealer, or law enforcement to check for stolen equipment before you buy. Unless someone here has also been shopping for the same size, same model as you it is kind of hard to give you an honest answer. I will say that you are probably in the regon of the most popular machines sold today. My only advise would be that all are good machines, some have features that may outstanding above the other two for you. I'll launch into my sermon on dealers again, Regardless of the color you buy, find a dealer you are comfortable with, check out their service department, they all will need it sooner or later. The dealer you are most comfortable with may not have the rock bottom price we all like to find, but a bargan price is soon forgotten whe a service issue pops up and the dealer is two states away. I took a demo drive at the dealership about three weeks ago. You are 100% correct the steering is like a Rolls, not a Caddy and the ride is unbelivable, I don't think I've ever seen a Rolls let alone ride in one, but the folks of means seem to like them. I traded my HPX on the spot, the new one isn't here yet. In their accessories catalog it shows a neat little toolbox kinda like a pickup toolbox, I orederd one, it just looked kinda neat. Believe it or not the whole deal was the wife's idea, she could hardly steer the HPX. Deere has always taken care of any problems I've had, I'm sure they will find the source of the noise and make it right. Enjoy your day. Frank.

I like Murf's idea abuot doors on oposite walls in line with each other, that would also keep the LP man happy, he would'nt have to drag his hose all the way around the end of the house, just pull it thru the doors to fill the tank. Far sa a green house or room for plants, the wife has our sunroom full of plants year round I think Bigfoot could get lost in there, she doesn't want more plants to care for. I have pretty much finished up my exams at Mayo except for a follow up in May. I have a bad right ankle that is going to take quite a while to get back into shape, so I will be for the most part wheelchair bound for a year or so. There is a difference in elevation 17 inches between the garage floor and the floor of the shed, the garage being the high end. The breezeway would be mostly taken up by a ramp, so an elevator is going to be installed to save space and make it easier fror the wife to push me around. Frank.

Harvey; I'm still waiting for my PTO generator, I ordered it during the February ice storm. It is a 45KW three phase to operate some of my heavy three phase shop equipment and to be back up for the house. I looked into phase converters, but things soon become complicated and expensive, so the generator route was chosen. I still am far from an expert on electrical things, but as my electician said If you got three phase you got single phase, so we will see how many guts a souped up "H" Farmall has.
