YAW115; How big are the stumps? What do you want tne tractor to do after the stumps are gone? Tell us more. Stumps bigger than 18 inch diamater are going to be a real challenge for that size hoe. perhaps hire someone with a full size hoe to take care of the stumps, then if you still want a hoe one of that size will handle 99% of what you need done. Glad to hear you're staying with the big three, you will get better resale, better dealer networks with readily avaiable parts are a big part of tractor ownership. All three are good machines, but again my old sermon on dealers. do a bit of research on LOCAL dealers, how long have they been in business, the personality of the sales staff, well established service dept. etc.. Ask around people will tell you of the good and bad dealer experiences. What ever brand you buy, sooner or later it will need service, that's where a good local dealer is real important to your ownership experience. A bargan price two states away don't mean much when you need service today. Enjoy what you buy. Frank.

During the ice storm power outage a month ago a gas range sure would have looked atractive. We've got a smooth top electric here and a gas at the river, both have their good and bad. I'm not a good enough cook to know the difference, but the Mrs. does really like the smooth top. Frank.

ONTARIO; I've used a frost hook like EW spoke of in emergency plugged up sewer situations in the winter. A frost hook will jerk a hoe around worse than most anything else you can do with it. If you can get by till thaw or use what they call a grave warmer like they use at the cemetary during the winter to thaw the ground your hoe will last years longer. Best of luck. Frank.

MTmike; Sorry, you do state that the box scraper and rotary cutter are Bush hog brand. Bush Hog does build good quality products, but I know nothing about their prices. Best of luck. Frank.

Oliver; I do know what depression is. I haven't had the loss you have of a family breakup, but business afairs got me down bad a few years ago. If you have a pain in your leg, a problem with your stomach, type symptom you can explain your problem to a doctor. Depression however hits you on your blindside, you never see it coming, till you have it. Explaining your feelings to a doctor is difficult to say the least, because you cannot describe your feelings, that may sound strange, but so true. I just overnight lost all intrest in everything, was scared to leave the house, could'nt stand to see a clock, on and on with strange feelings and fears. In spite of my desire to leave home trying to escape the world, my wife and family put up with a lot of resistance from me and got me help. They took me to several doctors before they found one who did understand my felings and recognized my desparate need for help. He perscribed some medications, gave my family encouragement and proved to be almost a miracle worker for us. It is not a comdition that is cured quickly, it took me nearly a year to get myself back. I take medication to this day, but thank God I got over it. My purpose in all this is to encourage you not to give up on your wife's problem. You will need an unbelievable amount of patience and understanding to handle this, but we did it and with Gods help you can too. We'll keep you in our prayers. Frank.

Nurady; I've got a tech manual but I'll let someone else on the board who also has one get into the electrical issues, I'm basicly a bulb changer, beyond that I'm lost. The Mickey Mouse tilt wheel deal- is the plastic loop sort of thing that comes out of the housing in front to the steering wheel there at all? Usually one side of it breaks off but you still can carefully pull it enough to change the wheel position, if it is totaly gone then you're kind of up that old fammilar stream without a paddle. You will need to take the wheel off, pull the cover for this gizmo off then you can get in there to either fix it or adjust it to where your comfortable and put it back together without fixing it. Things may have changed, but last I knew Deere still replaces the Sub Mickey Mouse type parts with the same junk parts that some high dolllar engineer got a big bonus for saving Deere 5 bucks a unit instead of using steel that would'nt break, so really no point in wasting the money on replacement parts unless they now offer something that won't break. A few years ago Chevy had an ad showing the "Powerfull new Silverado" apearing to pull a completly stuck in the mud full size backhoe out of the mud hole, "WOW" what a truck. I found an 800 number that surprisingly got me to the head shed of the adveretising dept. I asked the fellow seemingly in charge if he was at all familliar with a backhoe, well no, he had saw them working along the road, so I kind of rambled on about how anyone who had spent more the an hour running a backhoe could have got himself out of the mudhole without anyones help in the first place, "OH I did'nt know that" says the top dog exec. Then I kind of entered the fact that a hoe of that size probably weighed 18 to 20 thousand pounds, belly down in the mud that nobody would be dumb enough to belive that the mighty Silverado would pull it out, finally after a big half hour of discussion the man did get straight up with me and admitted that their strategy was to use any means of deception to build the ego of the UNINFORMED buyer into believing the Silverado was so powerfull that it really would pull the backhoe out of the mudhole. I've wondered since if that man still has a job there if he would openly admit to me a Mr. Frank Nobody from Nowhere ville, USA what their basic sales strategy really was with that ad. Anyhow back to the Toyota thing, again another big company trying to fool the uninformed portion of the pickup buying public into believeing this truck can really do this. Worst part is some fool probably will buy a Toyota and actualy try some of their stunts and end up in the cemetary. My sermon for the day. Frank.

You guys are making me hungry, so sometime today I will make my semi annual pilgrimage to an Amish general store where I get my Red Wings, home made jams, jellys, apple butter, and clover honey, (my favorite). All their jams, jellies, and home canned pork, beef, like Mom made when you were a kid is in pint mason jars with a home printed label on the jar. You can buy a pint jar of honey or a gallon jug, just a neat place. Frank.

Highway; I've had mixed results using rental type self propelled units with a trench width of roughly 3-4 inches and a depth max of about 30 inches. Soil type rules your results. Dark heavy rock free clays work like a dream, sandy soils especially if it is too wet will cave before you can get the cable in. Rocks or tree roots bigger than an inch or so will be frustrating. I've got a narrow bucket for the hoe, like 9 or 10 inches to use in the rocks and roots unless it is too wet them the narrow bucket won't clean, so back to the wide bucket and get it overwith. Yoper; Yes the decision to sell was a tough one. My parents farmed most of their working lives but never owned a farm so their was no "Home Place" for me to go back to. So what the Mrs. and I call the "Home Place" is the farm we just sold that we bought in 1969. We raised the family there, raised big gardens, built onto the house a couple times, and fully replaces every building except the house and a double corn crib. So memories, you bet, a tear or two were shed, but it had to happen. It wasn't a big enough farm to sustain a son or daughter to continue in farming and without family help the young people have a pretty tough time getting started. We as many of you too have saw some rock solid familys be torn apart by from helping one child more than the other, we didd'nt want that to happen. So about mid December when the new owners showed up with a very generous offer, it more or less told us it was time. Now that it has happpened all things have worked out for the best, yes some of my stuff will have to go to the auction or the dumpster but thank God we have our health, the kids are happy for us and I have a new adventure. So yes Yopper you too can accept what kinda has to happen. Keep safe. Frank.

I just thought of another issue dealing with Deere transmission choices. From what I can understand from their build and price feature on the Deere website, they are going the route of the automakers and packaging options. When I ordered my cuirent 4310 I wanted the 12/12 reverser with a mid PTO. If I understand their build and price feature correctly you have to order an E-hydro to get a mid PTO. Kinda sniffs of marketing stratagey to sell options you really don't need. I had kind of toyed with the idea of trading my 4310 for a 3520 but for the above reason of no mid PTO with out the hydro, I'm just not in the market, I like mine just fine. Their marketing gimmick to drain more bucks out of a customer just plain back fired with me. Let's hear it from the defenderds of the Deeres, I'm big enough to stand the heat. Roadmaster98; The 50 hr. service is the most important service interval of your tractors life. No matter who the manufacturer, bits of steel shavongs, sand from the molds etc can escape the cleanup at the factory. $500. bucks sounds a bit steep. I've always been an advocate of using only the fluids and filters sold by the dealer specific for your brand (Kubota= Kubota oils and filters/Deere = Deere oils and filters, etc.). If you are physicaly able and mechanicly inclined enough to change the oil in your pickup, your dealer and your owners manual will guide you thru it easily. Best of luck. Frank.

JohnMeyer; I was just catching up on the latest posts on TP, and noticed that none of us answered your question about a 12 inch auger. I had a TSC three point PTO auger for a while, but finally sold it before someone got hurt with it. I consider it as probably the most danerous attachment sold today. I'm am not critisizing TSC in particular as I don't think I've seen any other brand that I would consider any safer than theirs. So if you do buy one be extra carfull and never work alone with it, PLEASE. Enjoy your day and keep safe. Frank.

EW; Art could probably fill you in better than I, but the original "Cub" Farmalls were built from 1947 till 1957. They had a four cylinder,59.5 cu. in. L head engine, just shy of 10 HP. on the belt, with a blazing top speed in road gear of 6 1/2 MPH. I think some comfusion arises from when IHC started building riding lawn mowers about the time Deere came out with the 110 series mowers Again Art could fill us in better on this, but I think they were called "Cub Cadets" which did have a single cylinder engine that had a unique starter/generator combination that was belt driven off the flywheel, I've allways wondered why that stil isn't used. Then the "Cub Loboy" series was built, but I don't remember exactly what years they were built, but I think they used the same little four cylinder flathead the original "Cub's" used. There a neat little tractor that did a lot of work on truck farms for years and still are being used. I enjoy getting mine out to pull the Grandkids around in a little trailer, but in the real world comparing the abilitys of the "Cub" to my 4310 Deere is like a drag race between a 51 "Henry J' and a 62 Chevy with a 409 four speed. Roadmaser98; I'd rather let the folks more fimmilar with Kubotas of that size do the recommendation on how well your tractor will handle a hoe, but I guess it really boils down to how much work, how big of jobs, value of your time, etc. I have a # 48 John Deere hoe for my Deere 4310, I do like the part of not having to call someone to come do a 15 minute job that I can do myself. Most people in the excavating business simply cannot afford to bring a machine to your site for a 15 minute job, so that is an issue to consider too. I'm mildly familliar with the system kubota uses to mount their hoes, it is quite similar to the Deere system, they both have a pretty slick system for simple 10 minute mounting and dismounting their hoes, it's neat. I'm also a real big proponet of using nothing but a Kubota hoe on a Kubota tractor, Deere hoe on a Deere, etc. Your dealer will fill you in on the whys of all this. I love mine and am sure you would enjoy one too. have a great day. Frank.

There are all kinds of ideas from simple home made to something your dealer can sell you. perhaps othere on the board will have experience with equipment they have either made or purchased. Roadmaster98; When you speak of the anglw iron the teeth are attached to do you mean the main horizontal crossmember that all the teeth are attached to? If this is the case take it to a blacksmith shop or someone with a torch who can heat it enough to bend it back into shape, it is made of common mild steel and will straighten easily with some heat and likely be fine. The teeth on the other hand are spring steel like the leaf spring on a car, if you heat it enough to bend it back you will destroy the temper in the steel, then when the tooth catches something it will just bend and stay bent. Your dealer can get replacement teeth for the ones you bent. Best of luck. Frank.

8x56mn; I don't know what kind of grass is in your pasture, but a tiller will do nothing but plug with roots and whatever is growing on top now, the little disc just isn't heavy enough to do much either. My suggestion would be to first spray the sod with Roundup after spring new growth gets a few inches high, then wait at least two weeks till the roots and all are dead, then if you have a farmer nearby with a mouldboard plow hire him to plow it then your tiller will work. I don't know how many acres you are proposing to till up, but more than two or three acres with a tiller is a BIG job. let the neighbor plow it then the little disc will penetrate well enough to have it ready to plant. Before you buy the tiller see if you can rent it for a day, I think you will be dissapointed in how little you can really get done in acres with a non commercial size tiller. Been there, done this.
