Peters; Guess I did'nt answer the whole queation you asked me. I could look thru the closets and the basement and probably come up with enough usless sharpeners, Vegematics, Billy May super duty slicers, dicers, majic jar openers. etc. likely still in the unopened boxes that the kids have given their Mother over the years to fill a pickup truck, so how bout a road trip to Iowa? Rragent; Check the fluid level before you bleed it and if is close to full just start the engine and cycle the bucket circut a few times till it gets over being kinda noisy and jerky. Then refill the to the dipstick level. Frank.

Justis, yes allways fill a filter that hangs from the top, I thought that was just standard practice. Like you say some filters you have to refill two or three times, that is just the time the fluid takes to go thru the paper with no pressure on it. The ones that appear to stay full I think only have fluid on the inside of the paper below the threaded mounting hole and none between the paper and the shell of the filter, and that might be due to a smaller micron size of the paper that just doesn't let the fluid thru without some pressure,not real sure just guessing on that one. One of my "H" Farmalls was my Dad's. It was last overhauled by him in 1954 and was used on almost a daily basis till 5 years ago, it takes a bit of oil but still starts and runs fine. Like Murf said I know of many farm tractors in the 30 year old category with 10- 15 K hours that are still working daily on the original engines. any tractor, pickup, car, whatever can be destroyed at a tender age by abuse or neglect. It all boils down to care and maitenence. I expect my 4310 to live on long after I'm gone. Frank.

Blueman; Wowzer you must be sniffing too much diesel fuel, my baby Deere sits at the ready but I hope it gets a long winters nap. I don't know enough about football to make any comments, but the Steelers sound as good as anybody to win. No snow here but rained hard all night, real unusual for here on the first day of winter. That doesn't sound too bad, but I think as close to new as the tractor is I'd build and price an identical one on the JD website then subtract 10% dealer discount on a cash deal and don't forget the sales tax you likely would pay on a new unit. As has been discussed here before, be pretty sure who you are dealing with and have some evidence you aren't buying a tractor with a lein on it that you aren't being told about, or worse yet a stolen unit on E-bay. I got to thinking about the 5500. price tag. We have a couple 345 JD rider mowers and I've noticed that the dealers still are asking 4-5000.00 for them, so in that sense the 5500. seems like a good deal, 500 hours is a long way from worn out providing it had a good home up till now. When I thout bigger might be better, if this is your first tractor, you will get the "Fever" after you have it a while and will want a loader, tiller, box blade, etc. that a bigger tractor would handle much better. Back to your question on mowing 5 acres of flat lawn, yes it will do fine and might be a lower cost way to see if you really like tractoring, it can always be traded in later for a bigger one. Markpe; I haven;t had your problem with my 4310, but I think an easy way to check for brake drag would be to jack your tractor up one rear wheel at a time then with the motor off and the A,B,C lever in neutral roll the rear wheels by hand. You should feel some gear drag, but a brake drag might not let you roll the wheel. Do both sides to compare. Frank.

Markpe; I think it depends a lot on tread preference of an ariea or the most intended use. If you have lots of mowing as being the biggest use for tractors sold from a dealership the likely the Turfs will be more costly than around here where mowing is a not a top priority with the larger compacts, in fact the local JD dealer will hardly trade in a tractor with turf because so few folks want them. I really don't have a figure for you, but I do think a set of used turfs would cost a lot less around here than maybe where you are, so check around a bit before you buy. Happy hunting. Frank.

Oliver; Being stored outside does your tractor sit under the eave of a building where the water from the roof would be enough more than normal to leak somehow into the transmission thru a vent plug or something? Some hydraulic systems have a real fine screen on the intake that water will coat over and restrict flow. You said the fluid was clear, is this when the tractor has sat and cooled off or right after using it long enough to warm the fluid to operating temperature? Reson for last question, water settles out of the fluid when it sits for a few hours, but checking it directly after shutdown will show cloudy or milky color for water contamination. Far as an accurate fluid level check, warm or cold makes little difference, but parking it in the exact same spot every time you check the fluid lever is important. Having the tractor sit at a different attitude can make a big differenc on a dipstick reading. Best of luck. Frank.

Peters: Do you mean above ground or underground for your proposed shelters? With above ground insulation of R50 my guess is if it were protected form direct sun and not very big that a small air conditioner would keep it cool enough to cool out deer but maybe not cool enough for too long of term storage. I don't know if moisture would be a problem or not, perhaps a bit of ventalation would keep that in check. We used to have storm cellars that served to keep vegatables long into the winter and shelter from storms. They had stone walls, a dirt floor a wooden roof just above ground level with straw on top for the winter. Not an expert by any means, but just my guess. Frank.

Art; When I was a kid I worked for a neighbor baling hay. He was a real hurry up, and very particular type fellow who couldn't stand to see time wasted. I and his son traded off every other load either driving on the baler or loading bales, every load had to have 64 bales to make his hay fork work out to 8 bales at a time in the mow. He wouldn't let either his son or I help hook up the loaded wagons when he brought the empty racks to the field, you allready know the rest of the story, he stood on the ground behind the right side of the tractor so he could reach the hand clutch and the wagon tounge at the same time to hook up. Even as a kid it scared me to watch. By some quirk of fate he lived into his 90's with only a few minor injurys. We had farmall tractors and had a 2MH picker on an M, talk about hazards, even with the shields in place you were inches from roller chains, the snapping roll shafts, etc. I remember lots of older farmers who lost arms or were killed trying to unplug husking beds or snapping rolls with the picker running. So yes I can believe that insurance companies would get a bit jittery over some older equipment. Keep safe. Frank.

iveyjunk; I'm not at all fimiliar whith a Mitsuibushi so I can't tell you where a serial # should be, surely someone else on the board can tell you. The key thing sounds a bit strange, never heard of that before. Does the tractor start and operate like a tractor with so few hours? It's not uncommon for equipment to be sold at auction with no history behind it, so the old "Buyer Beware" thing kinda kicks in. Hope things work out. Frank.

Earth; When you say Green do you mean flexfuel for 85% ethanol? If so when I was shopping for a pickup there seemed to be plenty of Chevys available with that option here in the midwest, but maybe not in other regions. I looked at a couple rice burners, but decided to stay loyal to a U. S. made one. Chevy did have some real attractive rebates that helped swing the deal too. I looked at the Colorado, but the cab was a bit tight for a fat man and the sticker price wasn't enough lower than a fullsize to make it very attractive. Frank.

Len; Another thing I've learned about a box blade. The scarifier teeth on my Landpride are adjusted indivdually, so by doing a little experimenting If I want to cut a shallow ditch along a drive it is easy to get the angle started by lowering the teeth on one half of the box and keeping them up on the other side. Maybe not as slick as a top and tilt kit on the three point, but it works. Frank.

Whiteturbo; We are both of German decent so she was taught by her mother to cook the old German way. No pink in the middle meat around here, so done you can't keep it on your fork, lots of real mashed potatoes, gravy and home made pies. When I need some grunt work done all I have to do is tell the boys that Mom will have roast beef on Sunday and they all show up. I've found it's best to get the work done before we feed them tho. So maybe better buy a new pair of coverslls and keep the 4310. Frank.
