Art; This past summer I saw an "M" on a dealer lot with an M and W live PTO unit on the brake drum. I don't know if it still worked or not. We had a real strong Allis Chalmers dealer in our aeria who sold a bunch of their round balers. Most every farmer who bought one of them who ownerd an "M" Farmall had an M and W live PTO kit the following summer after his left leg wore out stoping to take the "M" out of gear while the baler wraped the twine and kicked the bale out. rman476; Your thoughts are much apreciated. It's been a bit over a month now and things are getting easier, our loss was an expected part of life, but you're still never ready. We were able to handle our loss in a planned peacefull manner unlike the victims and familys of the terrible disaster in the tidal wave, that would be more overwhelming than I can even imagine. tomrscott; I'm not real sure about a 790, but on 4000 series a power beyond gives you either continuous pump flow without a relief valve or controls. You must provide that in a backhoe or other impliment you've hooked up to it. Or you have the use of the three pt., not both at the same time. I've did on farm tractors as you suggest by puting diverter valves in the loader circut you have then using the original joystick for your control of your extra circuts. It's worked for me to gain extra circuts on an older tractor that came with only one two way outlet. I guess my one concern is where you'r going to mount all the hardware. Hoses valves, fittings, etc. can get kind of big and clumbsy. Having access to a pipe bending machine could make things look lots neater. Good luck. Frank.

Probably your best shot on a used one is in dairy or other heavy livestock aeria dealers. Most all the livestock industry has gone to skid loaders so there might be one that's been traded in. Most dealers now have a website listing their used equipment. Just click on the "Where to Buy" bar on the main JD website. Best of luck. Frank.

The closest thing I ever knew of far as using dirt in cement is remembering my Dad and his brothers getting together to pour cement for something when I was kid. they would start a couple days ahead hauling what they called "Creek Sand" in wagons to where they were going to mix the cement. They would find the equivilant of a sand bar in a river in the creek on the farm. They loaded it with pointed shovels. I guess there was enough larger stones in the sand to provide both sizes of aggregate as that's all I remember them using in the mix with the cement. Far as using just ordinary topsoil in the mix, I can't recall ever hearing of that. Just more of my ramblings. Frank.

That depends on lots of factors. How much time do you have. Do you have an alternate drive to use. How deep is the topsoil. Where do you want the topsoil to end up when you're done? Just for something to use as a guide line 400 ft. X 12ft. wide X 1.5 ft. deep will equal about 20-25 tandems of soil, that sounds like a lot of dirt, but last summer I did about the same thing as you're talking about over about a 10 day part time span with the 4410/430FEL/box scraper with scarifier teeth. Allways start at the lower end of a drive doing such a thing as a rainy spell can turn you're project into a mudhole unless you're working you're way up the hill so the water drains away form where you're working. I'd pull three or four boxes of soil loose then just back over them and use the FEL to carry it out the end where I stockpiled it. Frank.

We've allways tried to purchase as much of our needs for the furniture shop locally, but sometimes they just don't have everything we need so off to Mennards for the rest. Usually we get our cabinet hinges, knobs and door pulls there because of their large selection, so for the last few years if you need 10 door pulls you always get at least 12 or 13 because some of them allways have the screws missing, are broken in the package or something making them usless, then return what you have left over. Never buy just enough because I've had it happen more than once that when you go back to get a couple to make up for the ones that aren't any good they will be out of stock. So now to my question. Am I going to be black listed as a chronic return problem in their system and refused to be able to do as we have in the past? Frank.

I used to have an International Harvester model 350 utility tractor with a FEL, it had the same size rear tires as you have. I changed to bigger 13 or 13.6X28, I don't remember for sure. In soil it helped a lot, in snow it really did'nt do any good. So I went back to the trusty old tire chains to get snow moved. In my situation chain damage to the drive or yard did'nt matter, but if you have a nice blacktop drive, etc. then it does matter so chains may not be an option. I don't know the value of your Ford, but with new rims (maybe special order for extra wide), new tires, old tire disposal, etc. etc., you could maybe wrap up half the value of the tractor just doing what you propose. If you've allready got the "New Tractor Bug" you'd probably be better off trading the Ford in "as is" on a new or newer compact W/FEL, and Front wheel assist. If you need to skip some options to meet budget restraints, eliminate most anything else (hydro drive, cruse control, extra hydraulic valves, etc.) but don't buy one without front wheel assist. rpichelli: Please don't feel bad about asking "Dumb Questions". We all had to start from zero knowledge on things at one time or another, so we've all asked "Dumb Questions" too. Tractor point has allways had a good cross section of opinions on lots of different things, I like green, you like orange, someone else likes blue, that really doesn't matter we're just here to help one another in a common intrest. I nor anyone else here will ever "Know It All", when someone claims that title it's time to get shed of them. Stay with us we'll try our best and sometime we'll probably ask you for advice too. That remeinds me of my Fatherinlaw who was quite handicaped. he installed a garage door opener drive track about head high above the basement steps with a hook on it. When he had something to take up or down the stairs he either put it in a bucket or hung the item itsself on the opener chain hook, pushed the botton and "presto gaztts" there it went. And if I remember correctly someone gave him the opener. I've allways admired folks like your Cousin and the Dad inlaw who could make something out of nothing. Merry Christmas. Frank.

Everyone has their own opinions on motor oils, (Synthetic vs. conventional etc.). Yes oil for Diesels is different, almost always a higher viscosity 15-40 for diesels to lots of 5-30's now for auto and other gas engine applications. Diesel oils also have a different additive package to handle the diesel engine needs. Personally I for years have followed the "Book" that comes with the equipment whether it's a large farm tractor, Compact, lawn mower or automobile. I've really never saw any advantage for synthetics, I use the brand recommended in the book and change it and filters at half the recommended interval. I definitely would warm it up good and change the oil, but put breakin back in till the specified hour interval has been reached. Lots of water and contaminates will have collected since August. Again just my opinion and experience, everyone has their own. Good luck. Frank.

Main reason I've allways liked thak types is that a couple minutes after you plug it in just feel the heater and you know for sure it's working. Frank.

replleschi; I'll have to admit to being a bit brand loyal, but after seeing other brands of box scrapers and other 3pt. equipment I just go get a Landpride, because I've used them, abused them, and just can't kill one. The cheapest is usually far from the lowest cost in the end. Frank.

454; You're right on the money, a top and tilt kit won't do a thing for you except speed up the adjustment of one side 3pt. lift arm link and the length of the top link. The only down pressure it might add would be the extra weight of the hydraulic cylinders that replace the 3pt. links, and I doubt that would be enough to even notice. They are a neat feature, but far from a necessity, I've never had one either. Frank.

Morton seemed to be the leader in pole sheds around here 20-30 years ago, maybe a little longer than that, most of them they built back them depending on how well they were taken care of by the owner still look pretty good except for the paint fade. I don't think the paint fade thing was only a Morton problem as most any steel shed built that long ago has been repainted. I checked with them on a couple different times that we built, and it just seemde to come out that we could get a like quality builing by having a local contractor whom we usually worked with on the erection for lots less money. Also we've allways bought the material localy because they never had a problem standing behind what they sold us. Seems like most everyone in this aeria has gone about the same route we did as I haven't saw a new Morton or for that matter any national brand type building for a long time. We always did our own grading and fill work which also makes it lots nicer to work with local people. Best of luck. Frank.

D-15's, D-17's, 19's and 21's have been around a long time. They were good tractors, but regardless of brand that seems like about 2,000.00 too much money for what you want to acomplish when complete, I've got a couple 4- 5,000.00 "M" Farmalls that started out as 1,200-1,500.00 tractors needing a LITTLE TLC. There both are now in good shape and used pretty much on a regular basis, but the "While you're doing it" syndrome kicks in and suddenly you've spent a ton of money on an old tractor. Best of luck. Unless your yard is "Pool Table Flat", I'd stick with the 60 in. deck. Our yard just isn't flat enough for a wide deck, we drove a Deere demo with a wide (I think 70 or 72 in.)deck. It left a pretty uneven scalped surface so we got a 54in. on a 345 tractor and it's worked well. Frank.

Archdean; You and I must have came off a different assembly line. My feet are about as wide as they are long, so I've allways had trouble finding shoes that fit, both work and dress. Finaly got started with Florsheim for dress, they fit fine. For work shoes a near by shoe store in an Amish community must carry every size Red Wing known to man. They are very comfortable, light, and seem to wear forever. Frank.
