Even tho I've driven, repaired and relied on tractors for a half century for our living, I would'nt dream of buying a tractor on E-bay or any sight unseen situation (I learned the hard way buying parts on the internet). Your first and perhaps your most important decision is picking a dealership that's been in business for a good long time, ask them for references, if there straight shooters they'll be glad to. Far as brand I'm pretty much a green person. Orange and blue are great tractors too so long as you have a good dealership to take care of your needs. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to find service or parts for an orpahn piece of equipmwnt. Best of luck. Frank.

The Wife and I still enjoy getting a gift now and then for Christmas, birthdays, etc., but the gift of a healthy family, good friends, and living in peace with all is our greatest gift. I'm sure most every family ours included has gone thru periods of stress, with health issues, dissagrements among members, etc., but hopefully those things are behind us now and God will give us the strength to overcome the challenges of the future. In whatever your choice of celebration is, we wish the best to all, and most of all peace and contentment. You're a great group. Frank and Lucile.

nchrunch32; Not a thing wrong with good ole yankee ingenuity. I had a stick or something pull the wire off the PTO soelnoind on the 4410 while doing high grass work in a road ditch last summer, it had me puzzled for a bit when the PTO stoped. I called the service rep at the dealership, this must happen more often than I thought as he told me what was wrong, and had me going in a couple minutes. I too checked into the rental upgrade. I don't know for sure what all comes with it but it did seem pretty expensive. If I have time next spring I may try a piece of ply myself. Happy Holidays. Frank.

Grinder; I've never owned a 3pt. hoe, but when I went hoe shopping it was hard to find anyone who had owned one or a dealer selling both frame mount or 3pt. that would recommend one over a frame mount unit. Everyone echoed your service managers comment that the 3pt. just wasn't meant to handle that much twisting and overall strain. I've been real happy with my #48 Deere subframe unit, no problems so far. Have a peacefull holiday season. Frank.

McDaddy; Without knowing the size or terrain of your propery it's hard to recommend much, but if your acerage is big enough and has a creek somewhere in it for an outlet just use conventional farm field drainage tile. Most any Fleet Farm, TSC, etc. keeps the 250 ft. rolls and outlet tubes on hand. Check with your local county extension office, they'll have the specifics on the size needed the layout pattern, line spacing, etc.. properly installed and kept free of tree roots they basicly work forever. Huckmeat; First off I'm really not a pro plumber, but have had to come up with ways to conquer some odd problems in the past, some worked, some did'nt. So here goes. 50 ft. elevation change should'nt be that much of a challange compared to a regular submersible pump pushing water up from a well. I think you have a couple things going for you. First if the 2 in. pipe goes all the way to the house is a big bonus if you have a distance to go that will help with pipe friction. My thought would be to put your pressure tank in the house and a boost pump at the barn location designed to trip the pump in just as a submersible pump would be wired to kick in when the tank pressure gets low. Our submersible pump pushes the water 400 ft. up the well to the pressure tank in the basement, so I think the same principles will work. I don't recall what horsepower our pump is but it's been working fine for 7 or 8 yrs. so far. Hope this helps. Frank.

Grinder; Yes the steel is the standing rib type, not common barn steel. The upstais has living space with the slanted ceilings and the center flat part of the ceilings being about 7 ft. wide. That was a pretty common configuration of the turn of the century "T" shaped farmhouse here in the midwest. I see more and more of this type steel roof on new homes lately, and most of them have a roof pitch steeper than 4/12. The lumberyard manager was also showing me a new steel roof that looks from the road like a shake type shingle, but I think the sheets are installed horozantaly. That reminded me too much of that blankety blank old rolled steel roofing I've helped try to lay years ago, it never leaked a drop long as it did'nt rain. Thanks for your intrest. Frank.

Art; About the second time I used the hoe I taped a two dollar Mennards torpedo level to the grab bar in front of the control sticks. Mine is far from perfect level but it sure helps. Frank.

Broken; Guess I'm a little dissapointed on my Chevy dealer. Took my 04 1500 in for an oil change this spring, the check engine light had came on, I asked them to check it out. The truck had about 12000 miles, so still well under warranty. The service manager said "Is it Blinking", I said no just stays on steady, he said no problem just ignore it. Well then why is the thing there in the first place if it comes on and the dealer says no problem just ignore it. I've had the oil changed there since and they still give me the same answer. I guess if their service manager reflects the policy of the dealership I'll seek another dealer for the 06 trade. Sometines you have to let off a little steam. Frank.

The R4's have tons more surface aeria on the lug than an ag tire (R-1) so the load will be primarily supported by the surface of the lug rather than the carcass of the tire with an R-1. For what few times you would really benifit from having the R-1's it just would'nt be worth the time and money involved trying to match the tread surface speeds to keep your 4 wheel drive lead ratio in proper syinc. For example if your front tires sink in with the ag tread to the carcass instead of the R-4's running in the surface of the tread you've destroyed the lead ratio built into the front wheel assist. For the few times you'll ever get caught just use your FEL bucket to push yourself out. Frank.

earthworks; Propane injection brings back memories of when the M and W gear co. selling turbo kits for 4010 and 4020 Deeres back in the mid sixties faster than they could build them. They could easily boost the power of a 4020 from 94 to 125. Then somebody came up with the idea of injecting propane in the airstream ahead of the turbo. Wow could them things put out power. All at once you started seeing lots of used turbos and propane injection kits for sale. The rest of the engine and everything behind just wasn't ready for that much heat and torque. They tried oversize aluminum ribbed oil pans, bigger radiators, all sorts of things. Of course most every diesel today has a turbo, they are enginered to handle the extra pressuer and heat. Now since I've rambled on about a question you did'nt ask, I really had kind of forgotten about the propane injection thing and really don't know why it did'nt get very far. Maybe someone else can enlighten both of us. Frank.

Tom; Sounds like you have a classic case of a ruptured bladder in the pressuer tank. All the bladdere really does is keep air seperate from the water which will over time absorb the air in the tank till you're almost completely filling the tank with water not leaving enough room fo much air to provide you with stored pressure between pump cycles. I haven't had this happen in quite a while so perhaps they make the bladder out of better stuff now, we used to go thru a tank every two or three years. So if you've gone 7 yeare on one tank that isn't bad, they do wear out. Best of luck. Frank.

Seems like the wife has gone berzerk this year with the Christmas light thing, but that's Ok except she wants me to climb around on the roof putting lights on all the eves of the house. There has to be a hero somewhere in this great country of ours who has invented eve troughs with built in Christmas lights that just stay up year round. There might actually be such a thing that we haven't heard of yet out here in the sticks. Frank.

I guess I'm saying a lot of dumb things lately. I did go look at my building today. Yes the siding nails don't show thru because the siding is nailed in line with the studs on 16 in. centers. Frank.

beagle; I guess I should have drilled before I spoke. The cutting edges I tried to drill weren't Deere the were on a Westendorf WL 42 loader with an 8 ft. bucket, so I just assumed they were all that hard. This was 20 yrs. ago, bits are much better today too. Also maybe that's why the cutting edge allways broke in half about halfway across the bucket because it was too hard. Frank.

WOW, that's a lot of driveway. I really can't comment on the Cadets as I've never really kept up on them. I've got both a 4310 and a 4410 and also some leg problems. These tractors are a true joy to operate and have did everything I've ask of them. I've heard from a dealer that the new 3000 series that is replacing the 42,43, and 44 ten series will have an air ride seat, whether standard or optinal I don't know. And again my old sermon on dealers, If you don't like the dealer you probably won't like the tractor. Frank.
