I bought a BX23 last year to do a ton of work on my 1/2 acre lot and agree with the poster who said that you will be able to do 90% of the work with the BX23. I have just over 300 hours on the tractor and there has been a few times when I wished for more power from the FEL and backhoe. If you are thinking of going upscale from the BX23 I would look at the B7610 with the upgraded FEL instead of the B7510.

If you compare the BX and B7510 specs there is not a huge difference in capacities. Going to the B7610 would get you more power and more digging from the FEL.

You wouldn't by chance have the manuals for the B2410 would you? I actually have a BX23 and have the manuals for that but I am curious to look at a B2410 manual because I wan't to see if there is any parts interchangeability.

make sure the hydro lever is in " N" - I just bought a BX23 and sometimes I have to work the pedal back and forth a little to get the lever to go back into neutral if I park on an incline and it wont go back in easily

50 hour kit is all the filters and fluids I need to do the 50 hour service. I got a container of engine oil and a 5 gallon pail of Super UDT Hydraulic fluid, oil filter, hydraulic oil filter, fuel filters, etc. I knew from reading other posters I would need it so I figured I would get it thrown in with the cost of the tractor and save myself the trouble of having to get all the stuff later.

I am a tractor newbie looking for a small tractor for general landscaping type work, digging out of a foundation hole for a garage and some driveway work on my house. I have boiled my search down to either the subcompact tractors from Kubota (the BX23), or Massey Ferguson (the GC2310), or the Kioti CK20. After spending some considerable time looking I think the CK20 and the BX23 are the ones I am leaning towards. Wondering if anybody has useful comments and maybe pricing on either tractor (CK20 with a backhoe preferably) I am located in MA but would probably buy in NH- Thanks<br>

A further report on the problem I described. My dealer sent a mechanic out, and he solved the problem. Turns out it wasn't quite what David had. It was a transmission neutral switch that wasn't making solid contact all the time. The pedal balance between forward and back was apparently involved. Depressing the forward pedal repeatedly would eventually make a good contact, and then it would start. With the switch properly adjusted, it starts every time.

Jim and Brent. These symptoms sound like they could be HST transmission problems similar to what the rest of us encountered. You should consult with your dealer right away.

I bought a 4400 in June 1999 and have been extremely pleased with it. The reported scuffing has never been a problem for me. I have a mild case of dash fogging now and then, but it never seems serious enough to worry or complain about. I did have one of the early hydrostatic transmissions that got contaminated by filings, but as soon as the symptoms of that turned up, the dealer replaced it and Deere assumed the entire cost, even though it was past waranty. My 4400 has been a joy to own and work with, and I'd recommend it to anyone, not only because of the way the tractor performs, but for the way the dealers and the Deere company stand behind their product.

Mike, I used a 1948 Ford 8N for 15 years, and while I still have great affection for it, I began to be aware of its very real limitations, not only in performance but in safety. Since buying a JD 4400 two and a half years ago, I have been truly amazed at the difference, particularly the incredible difference the HST makes. I would definitely urge you to try these machines out and buy according to your own taste and preferences.

Arthritis in my back gives me limited ability to see what is happening behind the tractor, so I followed up on a message about the availability of rear-view mirrors specially built by John Deere for the 4000 series. My dealer didn't have anything on them, but using the part number given in the message, he found a listing in the JD computer and ordered them. The mirrors come in pairs, one for each side, attach to the handholds mounted on each fender. They cost $99, but I have found them worth every penny. They are very sturdy, and work great. If anyone is interested, I will try to locate that number.

Art, could you clarify this for me? I have a JD 4400 with R4 tires. I understood that normal pressure for the rear tires was 30 lbs. and that normal pressure for the front tires was 35-50 lbs., with the understanding that heavy loads, especially in front, would call for lowering the pressure. Do I understand you to say that 10 lbs. both in front and in back, so long as the sidewalls don't show too much flex or bulging, is better for tires and tractor?

I have a JD 4400 HST with 200 hours. Today for the first time, when going downhill in road gear, the tractor would not maintain a steady rate but seemed to lurch a bit, as though it were freewheeling and then being held back by the engine. Always before it went down the same hills at a steady pace, the engine holding the tractor back from gaining too much speed. Any ideas about what is the problem?

Does anyone have any information about brush guards for the hazard lights on the JD 4000 series tractors? If these are available, do you know the number? Do they really protect the lights? I'd appreciate any information you might have.

John, the telescoping link is purely mechanical and requires no hydraulic hookup. The two arms that extend out from your 3-point hitch to hook onto your implement are called draft links. The telescoping version makes it possible to extend the end of the link so that you can attach the hitch to your implement without being precisely lined up, which is sometimes virtually impossible to do. Without some way of bringing an unlined-up link to the implement, the alternative (known as the hard way) is to force the hitch and implement into alignment by fair means or foul. As my old boss used to say, it is a good way to lose your religion.

Having gone from a Ford 8N to a JD4400 with hydro, I can testify that the hydro transmission makes for much greater manuverability and ease of work. Both hands are always on the wheel, and in my experience you rarely need to use the brakes. But I think safety is the biggest advantage. Going down a work road through my woods is the best example. You can go as fast or as slow as I want to without touching the trottle or changing gears. You simply ease up on the forward accelerator pedal to go slower; if you let it all the way up, you stop immediately. This enables you to "feel" your way over rough spots. The same is true if you should suddenly hit a rock in the weeds and have a back wheel elevate dangerously. I find that I can respond so quickly to such unexpected situations that I can avoid what would otherwise be potentially danagerous. Doug in Wisc.

Mike S. Sorry, I can't use two at the same time. Sounds like yours was a real lemon and no fun at all. But if you have new brakes, new transmission, etc. as listed, you should get a good price or trade-in, as these tractors are in high demand and have great resale value. Once bitten, twice shy, and nobody would blame you for trying another color. But given the huge success of the JD 4000 series, I'm guessing that most owners have an experience more like mine than like yours.

Many thanks to all responders. With your help, I have found the "float" position! What was confusing me was the tendency of the front wheels to come off the ground just before I got it into "float", prompting me to back off too soon. Thanks again. This board is a great help.
