I had wondered about that semi-synthetic N/H oil myself. The dealer told me the same thing about the hydraulic oil I changed to and the only thing I could differentiate between the OEM and the new product was the fact that it is multi-vis. It did prevent the cold weather symptoms however. I plan on switching the Kubota over to full synthetic at 100 hours, which will probably be this fall. I believe the break-in should be complete by then.

You can tell which ones really caught on, they can be purchased new as reproductions or brand new models. My favorite mass produced look-alike is the new BMW "MINI" for its looks, not a great write-up though. That new Thunderbird is quite a looker as well.

I advertised it once in the local paper this past spring but did not sell it, not many folks looking for a plow when the tulips are poking through. It is a sturdy unit and the hydraulics work very well, large turn cylinders and such. It beats the heck out of pushing snow with a back blade and does allow you to pile the snow high if need be. On the down side, I am used to a heater when plowing and have always owned a truck with a plow except for a short period of time. I usually work long hours and don't want my face in the snow when I arrive home to clean the driveway. The worst feature of the loader blade is the lack of steering control when pushing snow. In the float position, once a load of snow is encountered, the front wheels will lift causing steering loss. If you don't mind that, it works fine. I found the best way to use it was to avoid the float position and manually adjust blade height as I moved forward. If you have a blacktop driveway, the whole process would be simple, mine is stone. There is a chain and clevis that come with it so you can unhook the top cylinders, chain it to the cross support on the loader arms and use it like a conventional plow. Hope this helps.

Sounds like your town is much more remote than mine, although we still utilize septic tanks here (on topic again). I transferred to a city position to "better" my job opportunities but would never live there. I have commuted for twenty three years. Thursday I worked until 2130, headed home in the rain and light fog. I was in front of the neighbor's house cresting the hill and a huge buck jumped from the bank into the side of my company S-10. I still can't believe he didn't come through the window. Last thing I recall seeing of him, he was brushing himself off and continued his run into the field. Probably a good $2k damage to the vehicle and I didn't even get a pot roast.

Golf courses had crossed my mind but I wondered why they would put 40hp tractors with 7'or 8' decks when they all have those huge mowing machines that almost float on water and take a ten or so foot cut besides turning on a dime. Didn't make sense to me.

And all this time I thought it was only me that did those kind of things. I was carrying a yard rake and shovel in my loader some time ago to clean up a mess from trimming tree limbs. As I approached the pile I thought hmmm.. let me push that pile of limbs over to the brush pile before I clean the smaller stuff up. Still have not replaced the rake, it works but the handle is loose. A good reminder to be more careful and THINK before I make a move with machinery.

I would stick with all this good advise. I can testify to Eric's statement being 100% correct. I run between my material piles and work area in 2WD in this weather to avoid stress on the system and engage and disengage the 4WD as I load. Since I am older and prone to intermitten bouts of alzhiemer's, I regularly forget to engage the 4WD until the back tires lose traction, which is almost immediately. I have a 2910, I can imagine what will happen to the 2400 W/O 4WD. Perhaps you can find a used 2719, J/D 4100 or the like and trade up??? It's always a good excuse..er..ah..I mean good reason to do that kind of thing.

All good ideas Fitch. I use the headrag soaked in water for the same effect. I had forgone all of the safety precautions, planning instead to work just an hour or two so figured I would not need them. No water in the barn, no wet headrag, no swim or cool down time except the few minutes I took to eat a sandwhich. Like I said, I know better and just tried to push the issue. I worked with the Mennonite that built my barn in this kind of heat last year and watched them break every so often and sit it the shade, eat a bit from their lunch boxes and drink water. All were young and strong yet still followed the common sense guidelines. I guess as we get older we use "poetic liscense" to justify what we do sometimes, at least I find myself doing that.

I have a hand held GPS that also has a dash mount bracket and power adaptor. I have used it to determine the speed of the machine while applying liquid with my sprayer. Once you have the RPM's right for the pump, you can make trial runs with a measured amount of plain water in the tank or simply use the application guide that comes with the sprayer (if you have one). I used a good average of both the guide and the actual test I devised. As I mentioned, after you have the RPM correct for your use, use the GPS to determine what gear (if you have a gear tractor) or the amount of depression required on the HST pedal. Since there is lag time in the speed calculations by the GPS unit, make sure you operate for a long enough period to obtain accurate readings. Once I had this part of it done, I did not have to keep the unit on board and my application worked perfectly.

I did the same thing on my tc29d. That is a great cutting deck. In fact, on smooth surfaces, it is the easiest deck to slide on and off due to the hard plastic wheels as opposed to the softer rubber ones on the Kubota and the need to turn the casters on the JD. On a rough surface or in grass and gravel, forget it. The 29 has more than enough power for a 72", I would go for the super steer for the extra $$ if you have any amount of trimming to do. On a shorter machine such as my 2910 turning radius is not much of an issue but it might be on the NH. The one thing I do miss with the Kubota is the full time FWD that comes with the SS option. I have a couple of bare spots on the hill around my pool to prove it.

This may sound totally off the wall, but the marine industry provides remote filter mounts for easy access. If you are using the machine as more dozer than tractor, it might be possible to relocate the filter. I would check with JD, companies such as NH offer tractors set up to brush cut in rough terrain and already have mechanisms in place to avoid this type of damage and I would think JD does as well. You may well be looking at a bolt on fix from the manufacturer.

I am not sure of the cost of a sub-frame, but I received a number of prices for a 2710 and one for a tc25d in 2000 with a MMM and loader for 19k. Carver was a bit less, but by the time I added freight the price was higher. I believe the 72" mower deck adds around $2800.

Oddly enough, the replacement set from Kubota is about a quarter inch narrower than the original set and the blade is cut at a single angle, although not extremely sharp. I put the file to them last week and changed them out. When I removed the OEM's that had been on since the end of last summer, I was able to get a better look at the cutting edge. The blade is ground at a slightly lesser angle than the replacements and a second angle is then added in the last eigth of and inch to create somewhat of a blunt cutting edge. The edge would probably last quite awhile, but is never really sharp enough to do a great job. Like you said, sharp is best and there apparently is no way to avoid constantly keeping them that way. I had thought of trying to put a case hardening on the edge after they were filed, since I rarely strike anything with them but thought better of it due to the cost of another set. Once they are wore down a bit I may try that. I was able to purchase some that way from Gator for my Grasshopper a number of years ago, I never did have to sharpen them.

I have done it both ways, by slowing and also when in motion. Have heard and felt the device lock in, sometimes with a little clunk, but never had damage occur.

Thank you Art. By the way, I read the oil filter test website. It is nice to know the Kubota OEM oil filters are of good quality and actually cost less than some after market brands.
