This seems totally amazing to me. Who would have thought wiring a flat trailer light plug would be that complicated these days. I guess I really lucked out when I purchased the plug-in harness for the 2000 Tacoma I had. The only reason I did that was I just did not want to screw around testing and splicing like I have done for myself and anyone else that has asked me to for the last thirty years. Had I gone ahead and done the Toy like I have done other vehicles, I would have ended up with turn signal and running lights but no brake lights. I normally test for left and right turn as well as running lights. Once you have that, the brakes on the single light system are a given. As soon as I went looking I am sure it would have hit me, but the solution may not have been so obvious. If you have just one particular unit you are towing, seperate lights are an option. My utility trailer was set up like that until one set of lights rotted away and I changed it to single lights. There used to be a hot wire from the brake light switch under the dash that you could tap into for just brake lights, or for an auxilary brake unit. I suppose all that has changed as well? It's still not rocket science, it was the termonolgy that threw me.

Here is a new twist. The wild geese in this area have decided to stay. I was listening to the radio on my way to work and the radio announcer described the ones in this area as "welfare geese", no purpose except to exhist and create a mess. I did not realize these Canadian geese were such a problem, except to see them stop traffic on busy streets. Apparently the wild Canada goose that still migrates is a seperate colony from this band of disrupters. They are making quite a mess of property and since the law protects them, there is not much one can do. Some maintainance people at a posh local golf course were arrested this week for trying to shoo them away with brooms,in the process one (goose) broke its leg. They were arrested for this act and the injured goose taken to a vet. Can you imagine, I would think taxpayers could have their money spent on something better. They should have plucked it and fed it to the homeless at St. John's Home. Now I understand there are some border collies trained to chase just the geese, not ducks or other wildlife, and for a fee this outfit comes by once a week with the dogs. Go figure.

Actually, there are many things that they have overlooked. How about overload protection on bicycles so you don't have to look at a 400 pounder moulded around the seat (that would be eye protection). Then there is the engine cut-off switch for your automobile that activates if you are too close to another vehicle, a railroad crossing with the gates down or at the dark corner in a bad neighborhood and the local hood has an illegal transmitter box to make you his next victom. My favorite would be water sensors on your boat trailer so you don't launch it in a parking lot.

I agree, although requirements/designs have changed so much who is to say what works best now. I like the truck, it doesn't matter what brand you pick, they all have their own list of problems.

I'll throw my 2 cents in here. I have owned both types of compact. The SS allows not only allows you to turn sharper, but it turns sharper with less scuffing. When you compare the degree of angle of the front tires required to make the same turn on a conventional tractor, you will find it is less agressive due to the axle pivoting at the same time. On the down side, you can't take full advantage of it on even slightly wet sod without doing damage, same as you do with a conventional setup. It will tend to skid the forward most tire when turning sharp on slippery surfaces as well [at least with R-4's]. The sensatrac is great, I never bothered to lock the front axle. The ergonomics are the best in my opinion, and the stance is wide and low. I had numerous problems with mine but never with the SS, it seems like a good system and must have at least twenty grease fittings on it to keep it moving like it should. I did not care for the way the loader mounted on mine, but I believe the larger ones such as the one you are buying mount like the Kubota, which I believe is the best system for both safety and reliabliity.

I use KNOX OUT 2FM to spray and build bait stations. Last year I tried plain Diazinon and it did not get rid of the carpenter bees and had limited effect on the others. It did a good job on the cluster flies in the attic though! The bait stations are applied one to an acre and you spray the other areas for the wasps. This is the first year for the stations so we will see what happens. I built my first one the last warm day we had a week ago and hung it near a nest that is apparently in my house crawl space. I did not dare pull the trap door to look, too many of those aggressive bastards coming in and out of the opening in the overhang. A couple dropped into the closet despite the trap door being closed. I am anxious to see if it works. The stuff cost me $100 for 64oz with my farm discount. I am going to spray around the house foundation and carry out a 4'strip around the base, it is supposed to kill pests that contact that area after that application. You then spray it on everything you want to protect such as overhangs, siding and whatever. It is safe for pets and children as long as you follow directions, like everything else.

Unless you have a backhoe, that method can be expensive and it does make a mess if the trees are large such as the ones I took out. The "portable" grinder I spoke of must have been the baby brother of the hydraulic model mentioned here. It was the only one I could find in the area to rent. It looked much like the old rear tyne roto tillers with the long raked back handles you still see occasionally. It required you to manually move the blade back and forth across the stump and you provided the down pressure. On the smaller, say 6" stumps it was quite easy to use. Where I encountered the problem was with several large hardwoods perhaps 18"-24" in diameter. I called the only two professional grinders listed in the area and neither one showed up to give me an estimate. I would definately use that method again, just not attempt as many in one day, I was able to grind them to below grade and with the exception of two of the larger trees, you wouldn't know they were ever there. Eventually I imagine some settling will occur due to rot, I keep a pile of topsoil out back for those minor annoyances. I am looking for one of those tow behind backhoes such as the one a friend of mine owned fifteen years ago. It had a gas engine and telescopic stabilizers you pinned into place. It even had a drive wheel to allow you to move it under it's own power. I used it a couple times to dig septic tanks in our old cottage track when we had problems. He used it to repair the water system there. When he passed the hoe went with some relatives and I never got a chance to buy it from the estate. It would be great for casual use and not beat the crap out of your tractor. The only thing I didn't care for was the control layout. They didn't follow any of the current standards such as four lever Ford, three lever Case or common Joystick design. Even with that machine, the large hardwood stumps would have been a mess and a chore to remove. Good luck.

I have seen all sorts of devices. One guy had a stacked version of the 55 gallon drum stove kit in his basement. Nothing combustable around them, but I wouldn't have wanted the thing in my house. He did what I have seen others do in the winter and that is to run Cu coils around the stove to heat water. Solar works well if you receive enough sun, we don't up here. Despite that, I have seen a number of water heaters on the roof or stand alone built from black PE or PVC, primarily to heat in-ground pools. In my area, we are offered time-of-use electric meters that have an off-peak rate of around 5 cents a kwh. I bought an 80 gallon energy saver electric hot water heater and timed it to run strictly during the off-peak hours. No fire to tend or cloudy days to contend with. Heats well too!

I just purchased a plow for my truck and would like to sell the 6' Curtis Hydro-turn Loader blade I bought last year. It was delivered at the end of the winter due to back-orders and fit to my then TC29D. I used it perhaps three or four times before spring. When I traded for the Kubota, the only modification needed was to move the outside mounting plates outward a bit and add longer pins, it now will fit either brand, and perhaps J/D as well. It looks new and has been stored in my garage, not used this year at all. It has a cushioning valve mounted on it, the dealer recommended this in case you strike something. I am thinking about price and thought of asking $1500.00 and settling for around $1400.00. Without the remote valve and hoses it cost me around $1650.00 and an additional $100 for the cushioning valve besides almost three months for delivery and installation. Does this sound like a fair price?

Any company can build a lemon. I had a string of problems with my TC29D, that is why I traded it before the warranty ran out. The auto industry isn't much different, I drive a GM for a company vehicle and this one at three years old has had several repairs not related to wear and tear as opposed to the Dodge and Plymouth K cars, Spirits and Acclaims they ran until no longer available. Out of our entire fleet they replaced one engine at well over 100k, never replaced a three speed automatic transmission (which is all they bought) and ran them until the bodies were too discusting for public appearances. We STILL have a couple of them for loaners. Biggest problem with the GM's has been EGR, transmissions and fuel pumps. The Fords are plagued with electrical problems (excluding the newest batch of cars). So to say one major brand is far worse than another is very relative. I believe Ford just confessed to a major QC problem.

Carver was running some specials not long ago, and there is a dealer in Virginia I believe, that posts here and has great prices. I communicated with him but can't find his e-mail address now, and he would transport it for a charge. Also Art White, and advertiser here occasionally has used machines. He had a TC when I called about trading mine in last year, and didn't really want another one on the lot at the time, but you might check with him. Another one in NY is Emerichsales@aol.com, he e-mailed me when I was discussing the trade on this site, and was anxious to help in any way he could. I don't understand a dealer having a used piece of equipment for sale and not taking an hour or two to degrease it and install new filters and fluids. That alone makes it look more valuable.

I owned a 4100 with 410 and 60" deck, which I would recommend over the 54" due to the width of the tractor. The 54" is a bit too narrow in my opinion. I don't know about your other uses, but for major rock and stone hauling, I woulld almost want to go for a bit larger machine, with 11 acres you will use it eventually. I would lean towards a TC25 or 29, a 4200 or 4300 J/D or a minimum of 2710 in the Kubota line. I have been where you are at now and kept traded up until I have the machine I should have bought in the first place. Costs more to do it the way I did! By the way, the mowers on all of these machines cut beautifully.

You both have excellent points, however we have not seen the degredation of values nor twisting of the constitution's meaning to this extent ever in our history. Believe me, I pray I am totally wrong. I love this country too much and would die for it any day, if needed.

Done the same thing a number of times on various tractors over the years. Hasn't happened on the 2910 yet, but it might. Never noticed any damage.

Well, I have been a Dodge fan my entire life. For a time the trucks were a bit stodgy, but good workers all the same. Growing up near the end of the muscle car era, my first car was an old '62 Dodge and my first new one a high performance Dart. I went back to Jeep for a time in recent years and then most recently to a 2000 Tacoma 4x4. My wife and I took it on our last several trips to Canada, and she complained every time about the size of the cab (and she is not a big girl). With the onset of Dodge's newest design for 2002 in the 1500 model line, I decided (read she decided) to look into a new and larger truck again. I drove the current body style first, a 2002 model 2500 4x4 and then hooked up with the new 1500 4x4 that sports the latest make-over. That new 4.7L v-8 was like running an old Road Runner, what great performance! The ride and handling rival that of a sports car, unbelievable. I could not get used to it's being a truck but feeling like a car. Most people would love that, especially the wives I imagine. Mine did not care, although she did give the thumbs up to the 1500 and the luxury appointments. At 26K that rig was fully loaded, including overhead console with electronics and 17" chrome wheels. I ended up paying 3k more and buying the older style 2500 with slightly less equipment. Still in all, that truck is set up with all the heavy duty packages and rides quite nicely. I always liked the looks of the latest Dodges and after finally driving one, I am quite impressed, despite magazine articles that say the truck is "dated". I can now haul, tow and plow if I wish with very little limitation. Besides, I couldn't beat the deal considering all the rebate money and low financing out there.
