I have owned both models you are looking at. The S/S is good for turning in a field, but you can not utilize it fully on a nice lawn if it is at all damp, in my experience it tends to tear it up. The TC29d rides a bit better and has the best ergonomics. The B2910 has a 4 cyl engine and a strong reputation for reliability, something I haven't noticed in the Boomer line yet. It also gives you the manual cruise control that allows use of the turning brakes. The belly decks on both machines give and excellent cut, and I will spend the extra time mounting them any day due to the time saved while mowing as opposed to the three point system. Haven't had a deck clog since I gave up the riding mowers. The Kubota deck is easier to re-mount than the N/H, particularly if you are not on a smooth cement floor.

I guess you are having some of the same problems with green I had with blue. I believe it was TomG that said awhile back, you can have a lemon no matter what color you buy, they all produce one from time to time. Sorry to hear about your problems, I know only too well how frustrating that can be. I am impressed that J/D replaced the machine once already, I had to trade mine off to end the headaches.

Roger,

I am not saying that having to replace a top link mount and bolts on a new machine at a cost of around $85.00 is a budget breaker. What I am saying is that it should not have to be done after the fact, the machines should be built well enough before they are out the door. If that part is already available and customers are breaking the standard one well HEEELLLLOOOO! I could understand if they had a new design and then improved the product due to failure, but in this case the manufacturers have the H/D part, documented failures on the standard one yet do nothing to change.That is what irritates me. What about all the users out there that don't read tractor boards?? How do they find out about a part that is too lightly designed that could cause potential damage to their machines? But I guess I have too much common sense and it is ingrained in me to always do the best I can.

I have read a good deal about top link breakage. Saw one picture of it on a J/D 4300 and heard of another one on a Kubota tearing apart, on this board I believe. Not sure about the N/H, but the setup looks about the same. It is hard to say how extensive the problem is with these. The casting is ruined when it happens, requiring a major and expensive repair. We have a couple dealers on this board that are associated with Kubota. I was wondering what they could add to the fray. I am probably going to replace my new Kubota top link mount with the heavy duty one myself, which upsets me that it has to be done to prevent damage to my machine in the future. Any input here Art White or Mr. Carver?

My use is strictly short distances and will normally be with less than a thousand pound payload plus the trailer. I have already towed a ton with it and had no problem at all. I want to be able to move my tractor if I need to and that would probably bring the total to around 4000# with loader and mower attached.

I had noticed that the N/H loader bucket was quite large when compared to other brands of the same H/P. I went from the tc29 to a 2910 and with one more H/P I have a bucket roughly 1/3 smaller. I wonder if the capability to carry a heavy load along with the normal pounding a machine gets when using a loader would cause something like this. In addition, they have a very wide trac. By it's very nature, that would put more stress on any joints in the assembly.

You are going to think I'm senile, but I don't remember the amount. I talked to the builder the day he did it and since then have forgotten. I can tell you that we had three of those trucks you see in the pictures full of it, don't know their capacity. My building is 40 x 60 and the cement is 4" thick on average. Since it was a package deal, I can't really tell you how much the cement was, but he was EXTERMELY reasonable. I wish I could have afforded the Morton, but they came in at almost double the cost, that would have meant a much smaller building for me. Congratulations on building such a fine barn, I am envious.

Jason, the project is long since paid for. We dug under the slab and chipped the concrete away around the stand pipe that was affected the most then hammered the whole thing down to the point it now drains from one end to the other. Not as neat a job as you suggested, but the most I figured I would get out of them. I don't like lawyers and so unfortunately, I pick the lesser of two evils at times. The undermine is not extensive and I am going to pack it with a sand/cement mix this spring once everything is settled.

I heard of a limited number of 4100 hydro transmissions failing, a J/D mechanic told me about them. Don't know if that is an issue. I traded one in 2000 with 170 hrs on it with no problems showing. I was allowed $12500 at the time and that was by a non-Deere dealer, the J/D allowance was less. My maching was new in appearance, but lacked the heated cab and front blade. It did have the J/D belly mower, you did not mention one (do the math). I would probably go to the school and talk to the maintenance shop people, they could give you a heads-up on the use/abuse factor, but 200hrs isn't much time to tear up a tractor. One thing I can say, if I had it to do over, I would have purchased the 855 or 955 instead. More HP and tougher machine, machines that have certainly proven themselves over time. Hope this helps!

Check the archives for some of what you are looking for, especially if you are side hilling. Otherwise, a tractor will go down any hill, just depends upon what you want it to look like at the bottom. There are too many factors involved for anyone here to make a flat statement and be secure in the fact that what they told you would not get you hurt or worse. All I can say is think about how steep the hill, how heavy the rear, how heavy the front proportionately, what are you driving on, how wet is it, how well will your unit hold you back with the transmission in low gear, will you be making a turn and so forth.

Now you guys have me thinking. Are you suggesting an engine oil change on a new tractor at less than the 50 hours the manual states? I am not quite to 20 yet, perhaps that is a good time? I have always heard that the factory uses a "special" break in oil that should be left in until the required time. Old wives tale???? We switched to synthetic in both our Jeep and Toyota, I am unsure what the interval should be. I anticipate running them around 4-5k rather than three, but really don't have a guideline to follow.

My company purchases a hook with a steel mounting plate attached. They then weld this product to the inside of the bucket near the top and center. This works well and you avoid having your line or strap making that abrupt turn over a possibly sharp upper bucket lip. I have kicked several ideas around and am debating the use of a pintle hook in this area. It would give me a positive closing on my strap plus allow me to move my pole trailer around easily. I am just a bit leery as to the effect of debree on the thing over time. I will probably end up with some sort of hook or loop that I can lace a D hook over when in use and remove it when done. I plan on using a steel backing plate and drilling and bolting it into place. I will calk it up good for moisture defense when I mount it. I have serious doubts about welding this type of thing to thin steel. Heat could possible weaken the spot or case harden it and make it brittle, as well as deform it. But then, the newer welders are less prone to doing that I have heard. Just my opinion of course, plenty of engineers on this board that can help you more than I!

The mechanic came this morning with my new loader frame. It took us about an hour and a half to replace it in my heated garage with an air wrench and floor jack. Most of the work was related to the attachments bolted to it. The pin holes now line up nicely when the loader is seated into the frame for mounting. The holes are a bit snug yet but that will wear in. One thing I noticed is that it is a bear to remove and install with the Curtis blade on as opposed to the bucket. I won't do that again (hopefully won't have to).

Here is the ironic part. When we went to remove the loader to do the work, both of the stops on the one side that I had insisted were poorly welded and positioned incorrectly broke free at the top. I didn't even notice it until we had the machine back in my garage and the replacement unit on the floor next to it. I was using my Vernier calipers to check the position of the stops on the replacement unit agains the origonal and saw what had happened. I guess that more or less re-affirms that what I had explained to the dealer and Kubota rep was indeed the problem. I think when they left after the inspection process last time they agreed to to the exchange to keep me happy. I feel vindicated now, instead of a noisy customer that is too fussy. Hey, sometimes things work out.

I would suggest no less than the 72" MMM with the TC29 SS. Seems to me the tractor is 60" wide measured to the outside of the tread. If you buy one, I have been told the rear discharge deck works nicely. I had the side discharge on mine. Also, find out if the recall for the hydro transmission applies to that '99. If there is no warranty, I would have it done first. It requires the tractor to be dismantled and broken twice to get the job done. Good luck.

I have them on my 2910, and it is close. Especially on the bottom front of the inner fender, a bolt sticks out enough where it could create a problem if your chains loosened.

I see. Nice setup! I think this will work very well. I do like the pop up reply box that lets you view the message as you reply. How about an industry first, install a spell checker function in the post mode. Is that possible or is it a programming nightmare?

Yesterday I trimmed my tc29 chains down to fit my 2910. I had to remove only two cross link sections, the width is fine. Two thing I noticed; first, the clearance between the fender is ok but there is one bolt to the bottom front of the inner fender I may have to modify to prevent a possible snag if they loosen a bit and secondly, I need tightners. Last year I used rubber straps but the ones I have are too long. I have heard of chain tightners and wonder if they are a better performer. Has anyone here used them? They are considerably more $$ than straps, but if they are worth it I will buy some. Thanks
