I had the same problem with my 870 a few months ago. Replacing the solenoid did the trick. When it went, it was pretty spectacular. Lots of white smoke that smelled really bad and then the engine stopped as the solenoid gave out. As I remember, it was slightly difficult to get out but easily doable if you take your time and keep track of the samll pieces.

I have an 870 and several years ago I had the same problem. Someone on the forums was familiar with this problem and I believe they said moisture can cause the clutch plates to stick together when the tractor sits idle for awhile. When you then start it up, you won't be able to shift it into any gear because the clutch is not released (even though you've pressed on the clutch pedal) and the synchronizer rings won't let the gears engage. I believe the solution was to put the tractor into 1st gear with the engine off, depress the clutch pedal and have someone give the tractor a slight bump forward or backward to free the sticking clutch plates. They also mentioned they used a board to keep the clutch pedal depressed when they were going to let the tractor sit for awhile to keep it from happening again.

My 870 requires lo-vis Deere fluid. I used the regular Deere fluid once and had problems with slow hydraulics and gear shifting problems. Might want to check to see if the 970 requires lo-vis fluid.

There was a thread concerning this problem several years ago regarding 870 series tractors. I had the problem on my 870 and ended up replacing the instrument cluster. It was about $120 at the time. I think moisture gets into cluster and increases friction on the gauge movements. Mine would try to come off zero when my problem first started and sometimes they would move upscale normally and sometimes they stayed stuck. You could see them try to move when you started engine so I was pretty sure I was dealing with a mechanical issue.

I have a 12' X 88" W X 4'H dump trailer with dual 7000 # axles and load range G tires. I use it to haul manure and wood shavings for my horses. Make sure hydraulic system battery charges off vehicle. It's a bummer when you go to dump and there's not enough juice left. I should have gotten 3' sides and 14 foot length because my tractor bucket just barely goes over the side when loading and it's hard to evenly spread the load inside. With tall sides like I have, it would be easy to overload trailer if I filled it with sand or rock. Trailer was made by TARGET, an east TX company. Rear doors swing like barn doors to both sides. You must make sure to hook them back before dumping or they will contact the ground and slide off the hinges (voice of experience talking here). I probably should have gotten rear door hinged at top like a tandem dump truck for my purpose but if I had, it would have made loading into the trailer difficult if you ever used it for hauling something that had to be loaded from the rear by forklift or by ramp.
