well, it's a pretty different tractor, but on my 4110 I find it *much* easier to rotate the tractor output shaft than the attachment shaft.

Brian, I have not gotten into any mud with the chains -- I took them off at the apparent end of serious snow (luckily I was right!) and just as mud season was starting. I decided that getting around in the soft ground was not worth tearing up the meadow I'd have to go through to get to my road, so I just did work around the house until it firmed up.

My driveway is steep enough and crowned properly so that mud is just not an issue. Even when the "main" road is totally impassable, my driveway is dry and firm. That sorta says Murf is on the right track -- better material may be your answer.

Unless someone else can chime in with mud/chain experience...

I have basically the same setup -- 4410 gear with 3pt mower.

I guess I'm not very sophisticated about mowing, but what exactly is the problem that stopping the mower creates? Maybe I'm not experiencing it yet because I've only mowed twice, but I'm not seeing any disadvantage to this.

Grinder -- having been through one winter with it, I wouldn't claim categorical knowledge!

But the only tricky part seemed to be before the ground froze solid, the blower would pick up some gravel. I might try using the rear blade next year if we get some early snows again while the ground is soft.

Some of that could also have been that it was my first time using a 3-pt hitch... and I'd only had the tractor 2 weeks, most of which was spent building the shed for it. So I wasn't what you might call the most experienced operator!

But I now can't imagine doing snow any other way. Even pro's with BIG trucks have had to give up and bring in tractors/loaders some of our winters. And they always had to drive up here and plow down, so the drive was a packed mess when they got done, which of course turned to ice in the first thaw/freeze. Yuck.

I just got a LandPride 1660 60" rear discharge mower on Monday for my JD 4110 gear. It then rained for 3 days HARD, and my grass hadn't been mowed this year, so it ranged from 12-16" high and was soaking wet. I was expecting the worst when I finally got to run that sucker yesterday, but it worked GREAT!

I mowed in 2nd gear/low range, with the deck almost all the way up -- about 4.5". Wondering if your problem was speed or height?

If you haven't tried biodiesel, maybe you shouldn 't shoot from the hip, folks.

It burns better, it smells a heckuva lot better, and your odds of dying an excruciating death from the big C are much lower. Diesel smoke is one of the worst things you can possibly breathe, and 20% biodiesel (commercially almost all of it is made from soy, not french fry grease) generates less than HALF the fine particulates that kill you.

We're lucky here in SE Vermont to have a station selling it right nearby, and it works GREAT. It IS "common sense".

I have pretty much the same problem with my JD 4110. Not so stiff to move the lever, but very jerky motion. Fluid level is fine. I've adjusted the control that's supposed to affect how fast it moves, but it seems to have 2 positions: off and on. On is several rotations of the knob, then off happens in less than 15 degrees further turn.

What are we *both* missing?

800x600 (iBook), 1024x768 (music studio PowerMac), 1152x768 (this PowerBook).

Because of the way the machines are set up, I've spent most of my time on this site on the iBook, and the width certainly makes work for those on that size or below, I can attest.

Also, a plea for (continued) mercy on those of us whose arms are getting shorter... too many sites are designed by 20-somethings who are clueless, with type sizes to match their experience or lack thereof. This site is a wonderful design and a relief from those!

If you buy one of these tractors based on specs alone, you'll be doing exactly what the marketing dept. thinks you will. That's why they spec'd them as they did, just as they did the rest of the JD line.

I went though the same decision last fall and bought a 4110, after talking with a JD dealer 3 states away who was a friend of a friend, and said basically: "the 2210 is spec'd to appeal to people who shop by specs -- the 4010 is more tractor". Yes, he said *4010* and he meant it. I later figured out that he was right. Based on general tractor useage, the 4010 is more machine.

No offense to the 2210 owners here -- they're both excellent machines for different purposes. If your needs are more the conventional homeowner ones, the 2210 is probably the better choice. For me, doing 6 cords of firewood a year out in the woods, clearing a long driveway in the winter, with lots of dirt and fill to move, and mowing as a distant 4th in useage, the 4110 was the right choice. Every day I use it I breathe a sigh of relief that I bought it and not the 2210, nor for that matter, the 4115.

The 4110 is the perfect size machine for MY use -- big enough to do real work, small enough to fit where I need it to go. If it was even an inch wider or with a longer wheelbase, it just wouldn't work for me. OTOH, if the wheels were any smaller, it wouldn't work out in the woodlot.

Given where you're at, A TEST DRIVE is the right way to tell. Specs are a good start, but getting on the tractor will tell you from the seat of your pants what to do. If you can, drive them both in quick succession at the same dealer.

If you bought a 4110 and implements the dealer should be happy to come out and help you figure it out. You put a LOT of money in his pocket, and he's responsible for making the situation work right for you on delivery.

I called my dealer this spring, 4 months after delivery, when I was having trouble getting the draft links to clear with the rear blade mounted, and he came out and figured it out on his dime, and he's a 45-minute drive away. In most cases, they sincerely want you to be happy.

So the other day I was buying a roll of 3'x100' 4 mil plastic that I've been using on my woodpiles, then noticed after I got back that it was clear rather than black. I was wondering if anyone knows which holds up better, other advantages...<br>

... then wondered what all of us who have large woodpiles are using and liking. I use the 3x100 plastic mostly because of cost: a roll is only US$7.50, seems hard to beat even if I replace it every 2 years, sometimes it lasts 3.<br>

Thanks for the reminder -- I'll need to take a look soon, as I'm tempted to put the rear blade on and try to work even though it's a bit muddy still.

Nonetheless, it's now been confirmed that this is the right orientation, and honestly, the sway bar turnbuckle is totally useless in the other position.

My 4110 came late enough in the fall that it was time to put the blower on and tackle snow, so astoundingly it hasn't even been into the woods yet! I need some time with it this year discovering what I can already do. Wood is the primary justification for the tractor, I spend about 100 hours per year on my wood.

I'm not into metal work or welding, and have too many things on my plate already to start down that path. If I need something in this direction, I'll need to buy readymade or get someone to make it for me.

We got about 8" here in southeast Vermont. Enough to give my new chains a good workout, very nice to hit the throttle and know I'm gonna move, and even nicer to not sweat bullets near some of the dropoffs on my driveway.

The 1967-vintage Skidoo suit I got on eBay worked super, as well. First time I've come in from snowblowing and been nice and dry and toasty -- best $30 I've spent in a long time.

Dennis, you phrased it as a choice between "more readable" and the "dense format".

For me, it's not either/or: the denser format is more readable to me. It is also more compact, so I can see more active topics at a time.

Having it all strung out with a lot of blank space is not more readable to these 50+ eyes...

In addition to the warranty, there's also just the idea of buying it and then immediately storing it. You lose the time value of your money and the opportunity cost of whatever else might come up betwixt now and then.

Still, if you found a great price on a good blower from a dealer who *really* doesn't want to store a blower (tied up cash) for 6 months, it might be worth it. Maybe you could get him to give you an extended warranty given all of that.

If you do, I recommend NOT doing what I did: storing it out in the open for awhile, and then trying to hook it up after cold weather set in... took me a long time and a lot of cursing to realize the PTO shaft wouldn't link up because it had picked up water and frozen inside, and then a long time with Jan's hair dryer to thaw it out!

Denno, sounds to me like your dealer went the extra mile. My 4100 took 2 MONTHS to come. Dealer had told me when I ordered that gear model might even come *quicker*, but I knew that anything not the most common model would be a problem. He told me if it turned out to be long, he might be able to get one from another dealer -- no dice.

Anyway, you'll love it. I was out with my new v-bar chains yesterday -- THANKS GUYS! -- clearing 18" of snow off the garden so the soil would warm up weeks earlier. Crazy, never would have dreamed of doing that before. Actually it was only semi-successful because we hadn't thought about it in the fall, so there was a lot of junk in the garden (BIG rocks, fencing, posts) buried under the snow, and I eventually chickened out not wanting to screw up the tractor.

But the machine will obviously do it, and next year we'll be ready...
