OK - Very good points made so far on the topic. One more for thought - I like to have 2 saws when I'm in the woods...(ever locked one up in a tree???) LOLL I worked in the log woods for a bit - ran Stihl, Jonsred, Echo, Makita (& a yellow electric at home for light stuff). My 80cc Echo is a great cutter, the Stihl was the crew's favorite, the Makita did ok, but my personal favorite was the Jonsred - it was the most dependable. Easy to start & no downtime. Echo is good, but touchy/finicky (carb). Good saws seem to run forever if you keep a sharp chain, straight bar, & good oil. And, as with most machines, dependable timely service should be a consideration.

LOLL ! I agree with using an axe (I can bust wood with the best of 'em, we hand-split firewood & big locust for posts when I was a kid.) I've never been around the screw types... At one time I had a homemade splitter that was a dream to take to the woods - had a chevette engine for powering the hydraulics sitting on a welded up I-beam frame on a car axle, ball hitch for towing.
Anyway, the old back limits my efforts now & our mule retired 40 years ago, so I was thinking there should be a way to run a splitter (preferably hydraulic) off the tractor. & I'm trying to avoid the current trend of having a garage full of gasoline-powered stuff.

Thanks to the info gleaned from this board, I was very close to going for a TC33D - but now I'm not sure I want to buy the end of a production run... Would love to see specs, prices, etc. on the new models. Hope NH releases before the snow flies...
