E9-livin: Sure, I'd love to see a manual. There is quite a bit of discussion about this process in my old (1957) John Deere Farm Machinery book, but I recall that the posting I was looking for was very practical and straightforward. Thanks.

Ive got a garage/workshop that has quite a bit of room, but I know I'll be needing an equipment shed. I'm just trying to buy some time on that one. I've got some books on pole buildings, and Monte Burch's book has a fairly straightforward 3 bay equipment shed that could be expanded. I can't imagine getting to the point where I say, you know, I've just got too much storage space and nothing to put in it. Let see, two canoes, two skiffs, a riding mower, a push mower, a rototiller, firewood, boatbuilding lumber, tomato cages, .... And then future tractor implements: rear mount mower, plow, disk, box blade, harrow, auger, ....

For organic gardening publications on the farm scale you might look at "Small Farm Today" and "Acres USA." You can find them at www.smallfarmtoday.com and www.acresusa.com. Acres USA is more purely organic practice but Small Farm Today has a strong preference for organic with a dose of pragmatism. Acres USA occasionally strays to the weird side with "biodynamic farming," which is sort of mystical and partly pseudoscientific, and political ranting and raving by the founder/editor, but ignoring that stuff you get the best large scale organic farming articles.

These two magazines have book sections and will lead you to all sorts of organic farming books you would never have heard of.

You'll also learn alot through the right seed and supply companies. Look at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange (www.southernexposure.com) and Peaceful Valley Farm Supply (www.groworganic.com). Southern Exposure is particularly good for southern farms. Peaceful Valley is on the west coast but carries alot of equipment and other supplies in addition to seed. Both carry books.

My own experience with the government ag service has not been good. Basically what you'll get is a recommendation to put X tons of 10-10-10 per acre and if its organic you want go get some city sewage plant sludge (I'm serious).

Plots1: It sounds like I don't need to focus too much on the 815# lift limit on the 790 because the drawbar HP is going to limit what I can pull before the weight is going to limit me. Do you ever wish you had the 1630# lift capacity of the TC-30? The only other difference of note is that the TC-30 has dry shoe brakes and the TC-30 has wet disk, which are supposed to be more problem-free. I would rather buy from the local JD dealer any way.

I've never bought a tractor and wondered what the "dance" is with the dealer for new tractors. Is it like buying a new car, where everything is negotiable and I make a price offer, etc.? The handful of dealers that I have spoken with have quoted my prices when I have been out looking, but are they just quoting me list price? Do I respond with a lower price offer? Will I get a different quote somewhere else? I'd rather buy from my local dealer than save a little by playing several dealers off against each other, but obviously I don't want to give money away.

I am comparing JD and NH in the 30 hp range and wondered what people think about the hard plastic bodies of the NH tractors. How long has NH been using plastic? In other words, how do these tractors hold up and look after a few years? Even JD has gone cheap on the sheet metal, though, compared to the older versions.

What is the practical difference between transmission-driven and live PTO? I am looking for a basic manual transmission tractor, and the NH TC29 and TC33 manual transmission tractors don't have live PTO drive. I'll be using a rear mower and roto tiller, among other things.
