Good advice on the RPMs. And you're right, I don't really know for sure how it was cared for for the 1st 1000 hrs. I know there is an injector test in the manual. I should be able to remove them myself and find a tractor service shop that can test them. So most opinion is running towards injectors and not pump, huh? I was really dreading messing with the injection pump.

Not with this particular question. But I did eventually solve my problem. Kicked my butt for a long time and was a simple thing. I was sure I had a bad starter because I measured 12v all the way down to it and it would not turn. Also tried jumping with my truck battery. Negative. Removing the starter, I took it to Autozone and bench test was good. Turned out the tractor battery had bad cells and although measured 12v, it dropped voltage under load. When I jumped with the truck, I had not disconnected the bad tractor battery so result was the same.

I still wouldn't mind seeing the starter mod diagram just for reference, though.

When I changed the oil last Fall, I added the correct amount. Everything was fine for months. After the shutdown (June), the crankcase was so full that it spewed out the dipstick hole when I pulled the stick. I then drained a large amount from the oil pan. Didn't measure but at least 3 or 4 qts extra. That extra fluid came from somewhere and I'm trying to figure out where. It wasn't coolant. Only other option is diesel or hydraulic.

Someone suggested a diaphram in the injector pump failed and that dumped diesel into the engine. What do you think?
