Problem solved. Replaced the coil for the No. 1 cylinder. I also replaced the wiring harness for the coils as the diodes in these tend to fail causing strange behavior. I had been getting a battery light staying on as well that I determined was the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator was the most expensive part. Bottom line, all the parts together were still less than one hour of repair time by the dealer.

Just a word of caution with premium fuels. Watch for alcohol content. Some suppliers increase the octane by adding alcohol Normal two stroke oils will not mix with alcohol.

I've owned just about one of everything. We current have 6 atvs. This includes two Polaris'. Depending on how much work you want to do with it, you might look at the Polaris ATP. My dad has one and really likes it. For long term low maintenance, I'm not sure you can beat Honda, but you pay more up front for this in the big units and sacrifice some performance. I just sold a 1986 Honda that we've had for 10 years. Other than adjust the valves, I had to do no other engine work.

When you lay the conduit, run some 1/4" nylon rope through each section as you put it together. Once you're finished, you can use this to pull the wires. I have an 8" bucket that I use for this type of work. However, a trencher is less work.

I'm looking at the possiblity of selling my 4400 HST. I completed the work that I need to do with it and could use the storage space. I know what was originally paid for it in 1999, but I'm not sure what the used price should be. It's a 4400 HST 4wd with 450 hours. It has the 430 loader, 47 backhoe, second and third scv's, 60" mid mount mower, 550 tiller, 45 rear blade, LX513 rotary cutter, and a quick hitch. <br>

Also, would it be better to sell it as a package or sell some of the implements on their own.<br>

You might look at a small utility trailer like a 5 x 8. It could be used for double duty. You could pull it behind you truck or car on the road and also use it around the yard.

I've been pretty successful digging out just about any stump I wanted to with the backhoe on my 4400. The key is patience. I was able to dig out a 24" maple stump from my backyard. However, when I was finished it looked like a bomb had gone off and it took both the tractor and my truck to get it up our of the hole. I only attempted it for practice with the backhoe. It was definitely not the most efficient removal method. For smaller stumps it works well to use a narrow bucket on the backhoe to dig through the roots on each side then reach underneath and curl the bucket to break the stump loose. As a couple of the posts above related, be careful using the 3 point hitch. It's far to easy to turn the tractor over on yourself. I definetly wouldn't try that method with a gear model. With an HST you can let off the pedal to stop pulling, but with a gear tractor, if you foot slips of the clutch it's all over.

With smaller posts I had good success using an old 20" truck rim to run a chain over and hook onto the post. Then when you pull with the tractor you're pulling up instead of out.

The CR stands for Chicago Rawhide. Most of the old equipment used leather seals for the radial shafts. I've attached a link for Chicago Rawhide. I'm not sure if they make a replacement seal for your application. Most of the new modern seals are nitrile or PTFE. They have the advantage of not drying out like the leather seals.

An adavantage to putting fluid in the tires is general stability. The compacts are light enough that they bounce around alot when mowing or bush hogging. Fluid in the rear tires really helps smooth things out.

My experience having trailered many items on numerous types of trailers (yes, I've been one of those pulling a full size backhoe behind a 3/4 ton truck), is that you can't every have to much truck or brakes. If the load makes you feel uneasy in a good situation driving down the road, imagine what's going to happen in a panic situation. I'm currently using a 2500HD diesel/Allison to pull my 4400 on a 16' trailer. Even with brakes on both trailer axles, when I have the FEL and backhoe on the tractor, it still not going to stop in a hurry. Another important consideration is that trailers are also rated at a particular speed. If you look at most equipment trailers, their rating are at 45 to 55 mph. If you are pulling a trailer on the interstate at 65 mph, you are most likely exceeding the capacity if you are near the limit of the axles to begin with.

I went to my Farm Bureau agent and had him write an artisan contractors policy for liabilty and property to cover the tractor and attachments. It runs me $650 per year. This includes $1mil. liabilty and $20K in property. This provides me coverage no matter whose property I'm working on. I was concerned about coverage when transporting the tractor even if to do work on my own property.

Most grease gun couplers can be turned (screwed in and out) to adjust how tight they snap down on the fitting. I have several fittings that I have to loosen the coupler to get the grease gun back off of the fitting.

I don't miss the Nevada fires. We just got rid of our couch we had when we lived in Elko. After five years in Indiana, it still smelled like burned sagebrush. Not a good sign when the air tankers are flying over your house.

After having the tractor for several years, I just added a level indicator. I painted the top six inches bright red to show when the bucket is level. I find it really useful when you want to load up piled material without digging in such as in a yard.

I mow my yard with my JD4400 with the R4 tires and don't have to many problems as long as it's fairly dry. If I need to make a sharp turn, I do it in reverse. If you turn sharp going forward, the front end pushes and ruffles up the yard.

I haven't notice any problem on downhills. The only time it even rolls is at low throttle. Otherwise, the engine holds the tractor. I was having problems with a delayed reaction when I let off of the forward pedal. This went away with the hydraulic oil change.

In addition to the 2500HD, I also have a F250 with the PSD, it get about the same mileage with it. It doesn't see to have quite the towing power as the 2500. However, that could be all in the transmission. The 2500 has the Allison.

Does anyone have experience with using a 550 tiller with a quick hitch? There's not enough clearance for the top hook to slip under the top link pin. Can you hook under the top bushing below the pin like you do when using a quich hitch with an LX5 mower?
