Sounds like way too much money in my books. Should be about half of that. I will probably offend a few of you but get real! I would be lucky to get $3500 for my '01 model 425 AWS with a 54" deck. Good luck and keep looking.

I did pull the plugs and they were dark and appeared to be fine. I did replace them. I will fabricate a piece of sheet metal to close in the box and deflect the heat away. The dealer was "amused" when he said he would have to charge me for looking at it since it was out of warranty. I have not modified anything. I did push the dealer, and for a price, they will tell me there is nothing that John Deere can do for this. He did allow that the new models are different.

I think I found the problem! I printed all the responses and took them with me to start a fact finding mission. When the machine died, it sounded exactly as if you turned the key off. I verified that. It did it within 3 minutes after starting this time. So, I looked and found one of those blue squeeze together wire splice's connecting the coil wire to the small wire on the starter. I inspected it and found considerable corrosion on wires and split spade connector. I got out the solder gun and made a good connection on these wires. Then mowed for 1 hour of tough mowing in pasture grass about ankle deep. Not once did the machine miss a lick or act like it would die. I would like to give all of you a pat on the back, but a sincere thank you to each of you will have to do. I will mow another hour or two this weekend to see if the fix was achieved. But, so far - so good!

It is a scam. Thanx for all the replies. I wish there was a good spot on this site for all to see this. I just got a reply from the scam artist. It reads.... "HELLO SIR,

Lots of extra's listed. I just priced a Western Oklahoma dealer for the same tractor. With all rebates applied, just the tractor and FEL (430)was $18,000.
