Pat: take the tractor apart and bring the oil seal to a bearing seal supplier such as Bearings Inc. Look in the Yellow pages for supplier. They will in all likelyhood be able to supply you with a sub that would be better than the original. The old seal has to come out in any event. LOL

I am looking at a 1998-99 L4310 HST with Kubota loader and a backhoe, don't know if it is a Kubota backhoe. It comes with a Pequa trailer to pull it. It has 700 hours. Is $18,000 a fair price?

The problem with 3ph hoes is the amount of weight at both ends.....800lbs easy for a FEL, 1100lbs easy for a woods 7500 (Im picking averages here)

When transporting across a field there is a lot of bending stress put on the bolts for the clutch housing, which is pretty much where all tractors split. If in doubt, perform torque checks on these during all maint and replace any grade 5's (9.8s) with 8s (10.8's) english (metric) ratings.

one thing that will help during transport is turn the hoe to either side....it moves its mass center forward.

Feel good tho, if the tractor does break, it will be those bolts and perhaps a tweak to the tranny input shaft, inconvenient yes, expensive perhaps, but its not giant broken hulks of metal.

I have been in business now for 4 years and based on the growth I have seen, I must be doing something right. For hoggin a 'clean field' i.e. one without cinder blocks, bottles or juvenile trees, I get $20 an hour with my cub 7275 and 5' hog, and can do about 1.5 acres per hour. The going rates for a lot of farmers that do it is $25 an acre. Neglected fields I get $22-$25 per hour - neglected as in hawthornes grown up, smaller trees, brush 5-6ft tall.

I did not arrive at this number loosely. I know what I paid for the equipment, I know how long the motor SHOULD last, I know that it costs a $1 per hour for just plain flat out fluid maint. (engine oils plus hydraulics) With expected breakage and flats (old nails and hawthorns kill tires) I need to see $8-10 per hour for the tractor, the rest is for my time and tow vehicle gas.

If the job is larger, say 10hrs or more, I often lop off a little of the hourly rate as I recoup also the gas and wear to haul the machine to the site.

For finish mowing, I use the same tractor and a 6ft king FM72. I get $20-$25 per depending on size and can do just about 2acres per hour. This is a steal as ANY landscaper who cuts larger lawns (golf, clubs, parks etc) *starts* at $40 an hour and up.

Now my tractor also burns .75-.8 gph at pto speed, but with red diesel running over $1.10 locally, Im not above adding a fuel surcharge (often waived on bigger jobs)

If I have to bring out the 52hp massey 65D that burns over 3 gph, I charge more, but then again, I can swing a 10-12ft right-of-way mower with it.

Basically, you will have to find out what the market can bear, and use judgement. When I use the backhoe, breakage can get severe and the potential for damage is greater so I go $35 an hour for hoeing.

As for the equipment, the tractor and some of my mowers are nice and shiny. However, my fav mower is an old Bush Hog SQ60R4 with about 100lbs rotating mass....its welded all over the body and is painted chevy engine orange, but its good to have when the field is laced with cinder blocks and trash.

Some jobs, as the case may go, end up not paying, i.e if you break too much, but at least you didnt leave revenue on the table. Repairs are deductible. I also have my own shop so can do an inframe rebuild if I have to - that alone gives me a leg up on the competition.

Also, keep something in mind, the proof meter is the easiest way to get an engine hour, but that means 1 Engine hour = 1 clock hour at 540pto speed. at lower rpms, needed for say hoeing (most pumps reach max pressure and flow about 500rpm below pto) or spreading dirt, an hour could be 70 minutes of your time. An important distinction if you are paying someone to drive your equipment.

The biggest thing to remember, is to always show up. Always give a price. I have one customer who has a field I can now cut at lawn height....3 acres I cut for $20. He is a 1 minute drive up the road on the machine and gets it done mebbe 5-6 times a year. I do this one thing for him that keeps the machine in oil and link pins and he calls me for just about any tractoring job over and over. Thats what you want, to become the name on the tips of customers tongues. Eventually the smaller jobs turn into larger ones.

Thanks for the info Bird. I noticed that in some of your other posts, you mentiond using a potato plow, aka middle buster. Do you prefer that over a moldboard? I would like something that will do well in both previously tilled ground as well as sod. Thanks, Ed

Would anyone be interested in a web-article on how to accomplish this? I just did this to a 1963 Massey Ferg 65D, went from a 15A delco gen with VReg to a 65A delco alt with Internal Vreg and associated wiring....makes a big diff if you are running halogen lights or worklights on these older tractors.If there is interest I will publish on my web page and provide links.

I get hawthornes in my tires all the time bush hogging. The only way to prevent is to back the hog over those bastiges when you see em. And the only way to cure is to take the tire off and run your fingers slowly on the inside finding all the thorn tips. Even if you 'slime' the tires, residual thorn tips will overwhelm the slime and leak.

Other things you can do is sport the cash for heavier ply tires if available. thorns can get thru 4 ply, but 6 ply seems to stop them. I got a set of 10ply on the front of my massey-ferg that seem to be impervious. And use ag tubes, not car tubes.

If the tire can run tubeless, you can do that with a patch kit in your parts box, until the tire gets too holy, then time for a tube.

Because of the reality of this, I consider a field with hawthorns to not be a 'clean field' and I charge more per pto hour appropriately.

I have a number of motorcycles and ATVs so as such I have chain lube by 'Bel-Ray' in a spray can, its a very hi viscosity 'sticky' lube that stays put. I use in on my woods GB7500. When I wash the tractor I clean all greases etc that have squeezed out with engine cleaner and a regular hose/nozzle. then regrease. No rust here!

and while we are at it - who sprays the ball/sockets for the 3PH arms? I use WD40 liberally.

Ok got the tractor. She runs like a top, very quiet. This is gonna definitely get a 'working restore' (I have 3 jobs booked for tomorrow on her)

Oil question, they say use straight 90 weight mineral oil. Ok, where the heck do you get this? anything 90/90W I find is GL5 EP oil. *not the same*.

Is todays 'tractor trans/hyd oil' the same stuff? I have the ORIGINAL operators manual (dated 12/63) so it is very clueless. Also, what oil filter do I use, it has 2 modern fuel filters on it.

To John Miller - if you want to part with the service manuals, parts and electrical - name a price. Im interested.

Lastly, I dont have the independant PTO - apparently that is only avail on the 165 and up. I do have live PTO, but its geared off the tranny input shaft thru the pto clutch like a 'normal' tractor (the the ground speed PTO and draft control is interesting but useless for me.

btw - CT has a plethora of parts for this, but anyone have a line on salvage parts? I need the front end spindles and hubs. The axle arms are original, but the spindles and hubs are welded on replacements about 20+ yrs old. Last question (for today) there appears to be an access place on the bottom of the tranny input, held on by 4 big bolts. She always leaks tranny fluid. It appears any gasket that SHOULD be in there, is not....I assume dropping this plate would be a valdez-like mess. Am I right?

I found a cross for the cub oil filters - no more 'looks like' guesswork.The stock mitsu oil filter is something like 30A40-00100AThat crosses to casite 240, or pennzoil PZ109, ac delco 1127 (warning, gm filters have larger diameter) and a fram number I forget.Still working on the tranny and hyd filters. I have a friend who is a dealer for baldwin, trying to get mitsu numbers, the only numbers are cub numbers which have no xref

Any idea what filters work on a 7275? Is the engine oil the same? what about the tranny hydraulic filter and the separate implement hydraulic filter (they are diff sized)

I should have it soon and will post pics after I get it installed, the lights xferred to it, the power source, the wiper, the cooling fan and AMFM CD player :-)

I have the same machine and have started it at 20 degrees with no problem at all. as far as ballast goes I bought a weight box from my dealer it was a 20x20 cube ,didn't like it so I cut it in half, front to back ,so now it is closer to the tractor and is easier to use in a tight area, filled it with lead weight from the supply house ,400lbs, and it goes anywhere, and still doesn't crush the lawn
