Thanks for the clarification. I have found that no one tractor or implement will be versatile enough for all applications. The best advice I can offer, is determine which applications you will be using your tractor or implement for a majority of time, say 75% and buy that tractor or implement that fits most uses.

For instance, if you need a brush hog for a while to get the rough area beat down and leveled and then plant grass and will be mowing it from then on, buy the tractor that will fit best for mowing, which is probably a B model. It may take you a bit longer to do the brush hogging up front with a B, but you will apprecite having the smaller framed tractor over the long haul. If you will most often be doing heavy duty brush hogging, get the L. But remember, your wife is likely to be intimidated with an L.

And hang around this board, check new and old postings, asking lots of questions and folks on this board will give you lots of great advice....and for free.

There's never been a perfect machine made and/or attachments that will work in all conditions. There are always trade-offs. Figure out what is most important to you and go with what you will use it most for.

If is fairly heavy construction for a year or two, go with the lugged tire and then switch them out for turf if you will be mostly mowing after that.

If it is mostly mowing, I would guess there will be times you will need to mow when it is wet and soft and I will guarantee you, lugged tires will mark and tear your lawn in those conditions. If you can always mow it when it is firm and dry, probably not a big issue.

I agree that if one has enough time you can do most anything, with most anything. The problem as I see it is not so much as a time issue, it's doing something with a piece of equipment it was not designed for. When you apply any tool to a job it was not designed for you will eventually ruin the tool.

Worrying on a stump for hours, one will be constantly putting too much stress on the hoe and the frame that will eventually tear the poor thing up.

I'm a big believer of matching tools to talents. If you don't have the right talent, find someone or something that does. You will be money ahead every time.

As was previously said, there are always trade-off and never does one tire fit all situations. For what you have described I would go with turf. You will be surprised what turfs can do in most situations most homeowners will use the CUTS for.

Sure there might be one or two times you might want a more aggressive tire, but if you are going to mow with your tractor, you will want turfs because an ag tire will leave large, ugly marks if the lawn is the least bit soft. And when you think how many times you will mow with your tractor during it's lifetime, it will likely be far more times than the few times you will actually need ag tires.

Too Cool! I used to spend a lot of time in the seat of my grandfather's 8N. My uncle still has it and has restored it and I have told him I want it when he passes on.

The old 8N's were bullet proof. I hope the retro model sells well!

AD,

I assume you meant a Kubota BX2360? A BX2360 would be all you would need for what you have described. Get a front end loader (FEL) and a rear blade, along with a mid mount mower (MMM) and you will be surprised at what it will do for you.

On the tires, there is lots of disagreement here on the Board, but if I were you I would get turf tires. They are just a better all around tire. Many believe a turf tire is better on snow than a bar tire.

Actually after my question to you I did go to the web and searched Tri-Fuel generators. I only saw Tri-Fuel for Gas/NG/LP options but none that included diesel as one of the fuels...for obvious reasons. But with these three fuels, one still has to rely on a public supply in the event of a crisis...but I suppose having 3 options is better than having only one.

I agree with Frank on this one....stay with a major brand. It will be a bit more expensive, but especially in these times, well worth it.

Not there are any guarantees that any one of the major brands can't fail (consider our own domestic car mfg's) but it is much less likely JD, Kubota, NH will fail in this economy than those you are considering.

This economic downturn will claim many victims around the globe before it is over. Now, more than ever, stay with the majors....you will have a much better chance of picking a winner that will have long term dealer support and future parts availability. Unlike a car purchase, you are much more likely to own a tractor for many years, so one needs to consider long-term viability much more carefully.

Upon further review....

We are both right. Here is an explanation I found on line:

The sensor projects infrared light into the windshield at a 45-degree angle. If the glass is dry, most of this light is reflected back into the sensor by the front of the windshield. If water droplets are on the glass, they reflect the light in different directions -- the wetter the glass, the less light makes it back into the sensor.

After I posted my previous comment, I got to thinking...Murf is never wrong and could I be wrong? So I went to the web and found the above explanation.

This reminds me of what my fishing buddy always says: I have only been wrong once in my life....and that's when I just THOUGHT I was wrong.

We have Blacktails here and they eat everything I plant. I planted a raised-bed garden and surrounded it with a 5 foot cedar picket fence. I then put in 12 inch high raised beds spaced only about 2 feet apart. Everyone here told me the deer would easily jump that low of a fence, and I knew that but I was betting that they would see through the picket fence and see a very uneven landing zone and choose not to jump....and I was right. The key is there is no spot to land easily and safely so they move on. As Murf said, they will jump anything, as long as they feel safe about the landing zone.

I wanted a lower, nice looking fence because it is close to my house and shop and I did not want some honking big ugly fence or a double fence as Murf suggested. If they did or still someday decide to jump the 5' fence, I will place 3/8 inch rebar 3 feet high on each corner and string up some shiny tape that they use in orchards, so that it looks decent and then take down the rebar in the winter and early spring so it looks nice 6 months out of the year.

But so far, the 5'picket fence with the raised beds works beautifully.

KT, I'm one of those consumers that just vote with my feet. I realize that doesn't solve anything, but I've found that if I escalate these issues, it often ends up costing me a lot of time that usually accomplishes nothing.

I live in Olympia and a 3520 will be too heavy for mowing except for July and August. You will find that any other time, you will make ruts and tear up your grass.

I have a BX with turf tires and even I leave ruts or tear up the lawn when it is really wet early and late in the season. I would recommend turf tires for most any size tractor if you plan on doing much mowing. I think for most home owners, turf tires will do everything you want them to do without any problems.

I even find moving the 10 inches of snow we just got, the turf tires work great. I have quite a bit of slope and it has been quite icy and I spin a bit on the steeper slopes, but they do amazingly well.

I believe most folks under rate turf tires. They believe the macho look of the R-4s have got to work better, but in my opinion the more rubber you have in contact with the ground, the more friction you will get and consequently the better traction, except for the sloppiest conditions, and for most homeowners, waiting a day or two for it to dry out is a much better option because you will generally end up just making a bigger mess anyway.

The best test I had for my theory was hunting with 2 identical CJ-5's Jeeps. One had a quality, but normal mud and snow tire and the other had honking big knobby tires that looked like they chew through anything. That one got stuck twice in a dry gulch on firm but steep terrain where the one with normal tires had no troubles and ended up pulling the other out.

You say the B7100 "just about makes it" up the hill. What do you mean by that? Do you mean that it won't go up and over the hill? Does it power out? Hard to imagine. Does it spin out? Is your current tractor 4WD?

I would think that any hill a 4WD tractor powers out on, would be too dangerous to climb anyway for fear of flipping over on you.

I have had my HST BX power out in some situations, but only when it is in high range. Never has it powered out when in low range. It will always spin the tires before it powers out.

I prefer a HST transmission, as I beleive most on this site do, however there are a few that still prefer a gear driven tractor. And get a 4WD, never go for a 2WD.
