I don't know why I couldn't get the pop-up reply to work for your post so this is a reply.

Some inter-state/international shipping regs might require a tractor to be shipped without oils, fuel or battery. In that case it shouldn't have started at all, but I sure hope no oil isn't the answer.

Off the top of my head: if the smoke was black I'd check for an air intake manifold obstruction. Who knows, maybe somebody put a rag in the air-cleaner for shipping. At least that would be a simple fix unless material was injected into the engine. If the smoke was gray, I'd check for fuel-line obstructions or air in the lines.

You've probably been around diesels for awhile and know the basic stuff. I don't know the tractor but somebody here probably does and might help with a manual as well.

Tom: I've been without a computer for a few days and am still seriously limping. It's been an aggravation but not as serious as yours.

I'm about out of ideas on this one. However, I wonder if it's possible to take the plastic line from the oil filter nipple inside the filter housing directly to the pump. At least I think the nipple connects to the line that goes back to the cases. That should eliminate everything but the suction line from TX to the filter. Maybe a dealer parts guy could help with figuring what if any suction line parts are inside the cases.

I don't know if the TX is synchromesh. My Ford has synchronized gears but the range shifts aren't synchronized. It sounds like some of the grinding happens when the tractor is stopped. That's pretty normal for non-synchronized gears. Sometimes I 'tickle' the clutch when shifting ranges (and engaging PTO and 4wd for that matter). A little clutch may realign the sliding gears so they can engage easier.

Shifting non-synchronized gears when the tractor is moving can be a problem. On my Ford, the ranges are not supposed to be shifted when the tractor is in motion. The relative narrow ratios between gears on many tractors make shifting non-synchronized TX's on the fly reasonable, but they can grind. Double clutching is the traditional solution shifting old TX's on the fly but it shouldn't be needed on a tractor TX. Anyway it would be good to know if you're dealing with synchromesh gears or not. In any event, it's good not to try and jam things into gear or engagement. The clutch-pedal free-play for my Ford is �" and I doubt that 1" of play would make the clutch drag unless it was warped.

A heavy 3ph implement such as a box scraper makes a good rear counter-weight.

As far as I know, pumps generally aren't adjustable, at least by ordinary maintenance routines. Max system pressures are usually set by a pressure relief valve rather than anything to do with the pump. I suppose the dealer could have meant the relief valve, and a stuck relief valve would raise an issue of over-pressurization. I suppose it's possible that installation of the loader could have interfered with relief-valve operation.

However, even if the relief valve isn't protecting the high-pressure line, design should be such that ruptured lines aren't likely. SAE standards in the '70's called for lines rated for four times systems pressures. If that standard were used, the lines should be rated in the vicinity of 10,000 lbs. I don't think that the gear-type hydraulic pumps generally used on tractors are capable of withstanding anything approaching 10,000 lbs.

This seems like a good place to repeat a hydraulics basic. Pumps don't develop pressure, loads do, and pumps are rated for how much pressure they can withstand. It would have been the loads of sod that produced high pressures, not the pump. Unless the loads were especially heavy for the loader, pressures shouldn't have approached a relief valve setting, let alone the pump's peak pressure rating, which should be a decent measure of max system pressure.

When the loader was working, you might have noticed if the relief valve was working. With especially heavy loads or a valve held open for a few seconds when the loader is at the limit of it's travel the relief valve should open and a scream should be heard. If you've heard that sound, then the relief is likely working and max pressure should be around 2,500 lbs.

Dennis: I've heard that hanging some sort of netting from eaves is good for deterring bats. I don't recall what kind of netting or how wide.

This is a non-member post because I'm in the middle of a Windows corruption and crash. I can't log in using my old NS browser. I'm tired of nursing my crippled system over the last couple of years and it's time for a new box, which I should have by Thursday.
