yes i just recently purchased a 284 from john nelson
trustworthy yes. I saved about $3,000 buying from him as buying a nortrac from northern tool& equiptment the delevery was very reasonable it appears to be what i expected the only drawback wich i knew about at the time is that he orders them when you order them from him and it takes a couple of mos. for them to be built and shipped to him if you can deal with a bit of a wait you will save money and have a good tractor .

Get the loader now. You will get a better price and also be able to include it in the lower priced new tractor financing, if you are financing.

I have found many uses for mine on just 3 acres. It have definitely saved many backaches.

Where is your pond in NoVA? I could use some good fishing.

I have a belly mower, 3 blades. I can get the 'ball park look' with my grass. Mostly 'orchard grass' with some Kentucky Bluegrass around the house where seeding was done post construction. I mow a different direction each time I mow. Length wise, diagonal left, diagonal right, width wise. My neighbors continue to 'laugh' at my anal retention, but everytime I set out on the deck, I can smell the ball park dogs.

I've got a NH TC18. Last summer I used a 24" auger on a post hole digger to dig post holes for my deck. It handled it quite easily as long as I didn't try to go to fast. Except of course for the rocks. Which given the size of the rocks, any size tractor would have had problems, or else broke off the shear pin.

Thanks for the replys. The certainly do more to confirm my thoughts. I'm too am very dismayed by a Ford dealer trying to sell such 'snake oil'. It is unfortunate as the rest of my experience almost totally enjoyable and I got a great price on the truck. I can't decide if I should send a letter to the dealer or also to Ford.

By the way, this product was definitely not endorsed by Ford as I couldn't even find a street address or internet address on the brochure. Everything endorsed by Ford has the logo all over it. I guess that should have been the first sign.

Another by the way, along with the undercoating and fabric treatment. They were trying to sell spray in bed liners for $200 over what you can get them installed by calling the vendor (LINE-X) direct. I'm having mine installed tomorrow, at the lower price.

Living in the north east, I have experience with both sand and ashes (either wood or coal) as an ant-skid. Personally, the ashes are much better if you can get them. One of the best things is that they are dark in color, absorb heat from the sun, and help melt the ice. My experience with sand is that it is great if you apply it and the ice melts away. But if it only partially melts and refreezes, the sand seems to create a very hard chunk of ice that is difficult to break up. Since you have a gravel drive anyway, you may try the tried and true anti skid that PennDOT (PA Dept. of Trans.) uses, gravel, crushed stone, what ever you want to call it. I don't know what the size number/letter is, but it is clean gravel about the size of a pea. Then when the ice melts, you don't even know you ever put anything down.

Does anyone know of a non-chemical way to get rid of poison ivy? I've got a couple of patches in my yard that I would like to kill it w/o killing my yard with Round Up. In the past, I've tried '2-4-d' from the local coop w/ marginal success. I would prefer to not use chemcials, but don't think that its possible.

I opted to by my New Holland from out of state. Even if I could have afforded the JD, the local JD dealer was not someone that I wanted to deal with. You could tell that this particular dealer thought that both his and the tractors he was selling poop didn't stink. Sorry, but I don't need to be talked down to so that I could spend my hard earned ~$15,000. I liked the Kubota dealer, unfortunately for him, he couldn't come close to the price for a tractor with similar features. I support him through purchasing implements, miscellaneous part, etc. Then I had the choice between two New Holland dealers about equal distance from home, on in state and one out of state. The one in state was way off on price. So the tax situation you mention was an added bonus. Cha-ching.

Joe,

Have you had any luck renting a post hole digger from Rental Unlimited? If so, how large of an auger can be gotten. I'm looking to dig some holes for a deck, which according to Loudoun County, require an 18 in diameter. I would like to get as close to that as possible, then dig the remainder by hand since enlarging a hole is usually easier than starting from scratch.

My other option is to rent a skid steer w/ the auger attachment for about $250/day.

Have you tried putting one side on, sliding the link as far on as possible, then stretching the hitch apart and putting the other side on. I had a similar problem with my TC18 the first time I tried to attach something to the 3-point. Turned out that I just needed to 'loosen up' the connections through use of the three point. Haven't had a problem since.

The numbers on mine, to be exact were $9,744 for the tractor and turf tires, $2128 for the mower, $2519 for the loader.

Don't know where in PA you are, but I bought mine from Ceresville Ford New Holland (800-331-9122, Don Beall, salesperson) in Fredrick, Maryland. I live in Virginia about 30 miles from this dealer, saved the taxes.

Just finished cleaning my mower deck for the winter. (I know, I know, its january) Already greased all of the fittings, but what do you all use to keep the bare metal from rusting? A film of oil? Rust inhibiting paint?I guess I need to get this done before its mowing time again.

I have a 1997 JD model 855 with similar problems. It has a backhoe on the back and a front loader on the front. The front loader is very slow to dump and the back hoe sinks down as I work the tractor and evenually drags on the ground. I have to keep pulling it back up. I think I am going to put a chain on it to keep it up, but I am also concerned about the slow dumping problem as well. If you have any insight to my problem; I sure would appreciate a reply.

My homeowners insurance is through State Farm. They added a rider to my policy to cover the replacement cost of the tractor. This was required by the finance company (new holland credit).

Where are you getting the 'good prices' on MF? The dealers that I have priced in the Northren VA area seem to have as high or higher prices than the Boomer or the Kubota. This is by about $1000. I'm looking at the Boomer TC18 or MF 1210. So I've pretty much given up on the Massey.
