I had the same problem with my 280 last year. Check under the tractor and you will find a rubber plug on the bottom of the case. pull it out and throught it as far as you can. These tractor were made to be driven in rice patties so the clutch case is sealed and will condisate over time if not drained. Mine ended up with a frozen throught out bearing which took out the clutch plate and pressure plate fingers.
Good luck! Cost me $500 to fix

I own a 280 it's a 1999 model with over 1000hrs on it. It's needed a few repairs. The clutch was by far the worst. Parts take forever to get. I was without this tractor for 5 weeks for that repair.
