I have been clearing snow here in Nova Scotia with a front-mount blower and a rear blade on a JD855. It works great about 85% of the time. My neck still aches when I remember using a 3ph blower many years ago. The blade is good for hauling it out from the edges and scraping down the hardpack that I buildup over the gravel. The problem 15% comes with the snow-turns-to-rain kind of storm we get on the east coast. If the snow is too soggy the blower won't move it at all. Then I have to switch to the FEL, still with the rear blade. Change over is 30-40 minutes total, not counting dig-out time for the FEL. Driveway takes 1.5 hours with blower and 6.5 with FEL (3100' total).

I spent a long hot afternoon on Sunday with my HST JD855 using the rear mount blade to grade out potholes and relevel my driveway. After several hours I noticed oil drops on the freshly graded surfaces and checked underneath. Sure enough there was hydraulic fluid dripping off several parts of the underside. It appears to be coming from fairly high up on the engine/transmission housing. This area is under the floors and I have not started diassembling to really isolate the source. My question is whether an overfilled hydraulic reservoir could be the source of the problem? The temperature was above 75F while I was working. Even cold the fluid has been above the checkered range on the dipstick although it has not caused any leakage like I saw this week. There was still some dripping the next AM but the actual fluid level did not seem to be any lower than it has been since the last tran. fluid change.<br>

Well, I actually got enough warm weather to tackle the ideas you guys offered here. It turned out to be on the simple end of the problem. It was simply that the machine screw that clamps the end of the throttle cable to the actuator arm of the fuel pump was loose. Of course, I managed to shear the head off tightening it and, since it is metric, had to go to the hardware to get a new one. There was enough of a kink in the throttle cable that it operated the lever through most of its range of motion but the cable was able to slip back and forth through the clamp about 3/8".

At least it was cheap, 45 cents and I now have 9 spares!

Hi all,

I have a 1988 JD 855 CUT. Last week we were in the deep freeze with a high for the day of -23C, (about -10F I think I recall). I had to take the battery inside and warm it up and charge it overnight although, even after that I never did get the tractor running. Since it warmed up to just below freezing I have been able to get the tractor going again but now I have a whole raft of electricals that don't work or work sporadically. For example, the PTO lever has a magnetic coil which is now dead, therefore no PTO, therefore no snowblower. Also, some of the dashboard indicators work sometimes (oil pressure, battery, glowplug indicator) and not other times and not all do the same thing at the same time. The outside worklights worked one day but not yesterday. etc etc etc.

At no time has the tractor failed to turn over and start (at least since the temperature went up). Are there several ground points in the wiring harness that may have been disturbed when removing/replacing the battery? Any other scenarios to check?

I have a JD855 with the JD 2 stage snowblower. I had a bad vibration in the triangular drive shaft the first time out this winter. The problem was in the mid-shaft bracket between the main drive shaft and the gearbox drive shaft. One of the bolt heads was sheared off and the mid-shaft bracket was moving around and setting up quite a resonance in the main shaft. I picked up a large rock last winter and broke several parts in the drive train but I must have missed the bolt in the rebuild (or it didn't give up the ghost until I used it this year). Anyway, since your unit is new it is not likely sheared but the mid-shaft mounting may not be tight. You might want to check it.
