No matter what size you buy, there will be a place it is too large to fit, and a rock larger than you can move. Let the wallet decide, and keep in mind that you can do alot of small jobs woth a big tractor, you can do some large jobs with a little tractor, but you never here anyone brag about how much they can't do. When trying to manuvure in tight quarters, if your tractor is too big, use the tractor to make the quarters bigger. But it takes a long time to slice a rock in half so you can moove it.

The problem you describe could be linkage adjustment on the hydro pedals.

For safety, the pedals must be in the nutral position to start the engine. If the linkage gets out of adjustment due to wear or damage, then jogging pedals to start is the quick fix. Check with your dealer for proper adjustment.

FYI. There is an operators pressence system wired into the seat. If you are on the seat when it starts, it will kill the engine(fuel shut off celenoid) when you leave the seat. However, When stating the tractor from the ground. It should start if the pedals are in nuetral and parking brake is locked. This enables the tractor to run such things as a generator, without someone on the seat.

athanks peters for clearing things up a bit. My knowledge is all from many years expeirience and reading. My family needed a farmer when college was an option for me, so any insight from those who know is appriciated.

youare right about legumes and grasses. they are different. But the reaction of young plants to low Ph levels in the soil are usually the same.

i am a big proponenent of soil testing, backed by twenty years expeirience in the field (literaly). And I you are also right about the lime/water thing. But you didnt take in acount the time factor. The No-till farmers in my area are starting to find this part out. Now they are starting to till after appliying lime. It just does not move through the soil fast enough to do any good in the rootzone. When seeding grasses and legumes, the seed depth is very shallow. and the application of lime on top makes the ph much too high when seed is planted at 1/8th inch or less. So some fast mixing is called for.
But after 20 years . I can still say these seeds are funny creatures, I have done everything wrong and the stand was great jsut as many times as I have done everything right and had a poor stand. But I have never had luck sewwing when soil ph was too low.

seeding legumes always takes a little prayer.LOL. get your soil tested by a profesional and follow his recomendations. See my comments on seeding under york rakeing, and pasture reseeding.

If you have ragweed in your pasture, there could be some good reasons and reseeding may not be the answer.

First, Identify the weed. Make sure it is ragweed you are dealing with. It is my expierience that local names for weeds vary from the actual name. There are more than one type of ragweed, there is also a giant ragweed for instance.
Make sure you know what the weed really is. You may need the help of a crop specialist.

Second, Just reseeding the pasture will not always cure the weed problem. Get soil tests before reseeding and get special samples from the ragweed patches, there may be a fertility problem that keeps the grasses from competeing with the ragweeds. Sometimes, soil dranage is an issue, if the soil is wet in these areas especially in late spring, this could cause the grass to drowned out and ragweed seeds will germinate in late spring and summer and take over.

Pasture maintinence is a fine art, and seed is expensive. plowing it under and starting over is not always a bad idea. And I cannot even to begin what problems overgrazing can cause.

but if chemical aplication is the way you decide to go. I would use 2,4-d ester. it's cheap ($1.50/acre) it's safe to almost all grasses, and it will kill ragweed, small brush, and most other broadleaf weeds, even some perenials. you may have to use more than one application during the year. Just make sure you check the label before you let the animals back in to graze.

In the countryside where I grew up, I was blessed with a niehbor who was a cropduster. He had all kinds of planes at one time or another. I do remeber a stearman with cloth wings and a metal fusalidge.

The spray boom was mounted near the rear of the wings on the underside, and was not noticable from the ground.

He never did own a new plane, so I could be reporting something that was not OEM.

There are alot of questions yet to answer before a size can be determined. But, as a man who has been on a farm his whole life let me give you some basic advice.

You cannot farm without a disc!!!! This tool is so versital that I can't imagine a farm without one.

A rotary cutter will always be in use during the growing season.

A FEL.(front end loader) is another must. Uses are too numorous to mention!!!

A box scraper. Grade those lanes!!!! A blade will be a little cheaper the the box is much better at filling potholes.

As far as size is concerned, the best suggestion I can give you is as follows:

Get as big as you can afford, The wallet is the determining factor. Big tractors can do small work, you may feel a little cramped is small quarters but you will be able to get the job done. If you have 350 acres to work with, I can't think of any situation where a big tractor will not fit. But if you are going to go out and plow 40 acres a two bottom plow with 16 inch bottoms will give you a cut of 32 inches, and your speed will be less than 4 mph. Can you imagine how long it would take to mow a 40 acre lawn with a 32" mower??

When farming, timeing is everything. I live in Indiana, not southern Ga. so we are a lttle more crunched for time up here. But no matter where you live, if you are planning on acomplishing a task on the weekend, it will rain on that weekend and you will be set back one week 'till the next weekend. If you miss two weekends, and lived in Indiana, you have lost the window of oppertunity for a maximum crop. Any day delayed from that will cost you in yield. Food plots do not count in this eqazion because all that is needed is food for the critters and they care little about your econamic plight.

another trick to relieving static pressure in hyd. systems is as follows. But this will only work if the system does not have a pilot valve. If the system has a pilot valve. See TomG's suggestions.

Support the implement (loader in this case) and then lock your control lever in the float position. engine should be shut off.

By locking the control lever in the "float" position, fluid from the couplers will go directly into the valve and return to the reservor.

The hose ends are refered to as "male" couplers. The ends on the tractor are refered to as "female" couplers.

Male couplers have a metal ball or steel tip on it's end which hold fluid inside when not coupled with the female end. This is the same way a checkvalve works.

Female couples have the same mechanism, only it is internal and not visable unless looking directly into the coupler. By moving the control lever in the float position,(provideng there is ni pilot valve in the system) this relieves system pressure on the female side of the connection.

When snapping in a male coupler with static pressure, the female ball or tip will open and allow the male coupler enough clearence for the locking mechanism to hold it in place. Once held in place by the locking mechanism, pressures can be equalized. If you have not supported the loader......IT'S COMING DOWN ...AND FAST!!!!!

Please be carefull. Support the loader!!!!! wear eye protection from spraying oil!!!!!!!!!!!!

TomG is raising some very good points. Those quick couplers can reall be a pickle and cause all kinds of diagnostic nightmares. They can be a big oily mess too. Just make sure the loader and bucket are on the ground or supported before you attempt to remove any pressure from the plumbing.

I'd say you are getting real close. What bucket is on the loader? Does the loader have a bucket level Indicator?
What 3 pt hitch option is on the tracter? Is that a delivered price? or do yo have to pick it up? How about service after the sale? Does the dealer have a good reputation?

Maybe you can get him to throw in a 50 hr service?

The 4400 will give you a little more torgue, better hydraulics and a much better choice of loader options. You can get a JD 430 and even get a 4 in 1 bucket option later. Anyone with construction expierience will attest to the versitility af that style of bucket.
The 4400 is much more ergonomicly designed and much more fun to run.

As you have already read in the replies, paint matching is still a long ways from an exact science. My recomendation is to use the Ag. Green. I am not waisting band width to explain why.

To all those who hate buying a tractor that comes with scratches. Let your dealer know. Tractors should have zero scratches when arriving at a customer's home. I am a dealer and I preach this to the techs constantly.

Loaders and attachmenst are a different story. If the defect is in an area that is not in contact with debris Dirt, rock, etc.) during it's normal use, it should be repaired.

F.Y.I. Paint defects are a warrentable, if you see a scratch, let the salesman know. I personally inspect every tractor we sell. I am not perfect, nobody is, I miss them at times. We do what we can. I can not speak for other dealers. I have also been undersold by 50 bucks and had to do the warranty work on paint defects when the selling dealer was "too busy" and the customer couldn't wait.
Again..I cannot speak for other dealers.
