I've heard previous discussions on the battery problems associated with the 790's. The factory battery is leaking out of the battery and onto the tractor. Does anyone have any input on why this happens and is there a replacement unit that won't leak in the group 45 size? I pulled the battery out and want to correct the problem before the acid is drawn into the radiator and causes some real damage. Any comments would be appreciated.

I have a John Deere Model 670; it has a three-cylinder Yanmar diesel. When it had three hours on the engine, it started knocking loudly in the manner that you describe. I was hooking up an implement and made a mad dash for the switch, thinking that the engine was going to throw a rod or something. However, it stopped knocking before I could shut it off and it has never done it again. I have about 250 hours on the tractor now. This problem has been experienced by other diesel owners, too, and was discussed at length several months ago. The general consensus was that it was a fuel problem. This made sense to me because my tractor had sat on the dealer's lot for a couple of years and there might well have been condensation in the fuel tank. I didn't drain the tank, but I did change the fuel filter and I always fill the tank after using the tractor.

I'm certainly no authority on electric fences; however, I completed one a couple of weeks ago that does a good job of keeping out deer. There is a great deal of information about electric fences on the internet and I spent quite a bit of time on research. Regarding grounds: You can have a hot wire only and the animals will ground to the earth, or you can alternate hot wires with ground wires and animals will ground both to the ground wire and to the earth. Deer can't ground to the earth when they are jumping over or through a fence so alternate ground wires are desirable. Also, during times of severe drought such as we get here in central Texas, there isn't always enough moisture in the soil to provide a good ground and ground wires are desirable. I purchased almost all of my supplies at Tractor Supply, including a multi-light tester for $10. By the way, start by the charger and test sections of the fence; you might find that you have good voltage up to the point where there is a short and that might help you zero in on your problem. Good-quality insulators and sufficient ground rods are essential, but don't forget that brush, weeds and grass will also short out a fence. Fencing is an exercise in patience and perseverance that tests our moral fibre. Hang in there! With enough mental anguish and perspiration you'll get the job done!

I had somewhat the same feeling a few months ago when I was shopping for a box blade. However, one of our local dealers had several Howse box blades and when I looked them over I found one that had been assembled rather well; in other words, the parts were aligned well and the welding was acceptable--not great, but acceptable. About two months ago when I was at the same dealer I noticed a new Howse boxblade that had just been unloaded and I could hardly believe what I saw. The assembly and welding were superb! I guess the moral here (if there is one) is to never buy a Howse product without examining it first. Their quality control problems must be a recent thing because older Howse products that I've seen have looked good.

Matt: I've got the Model 670, which is the next generation with a three-cylinder engine. I certainly agree with everything you said and I'd like to point out that the tractor is built like a tank. Many of the components (things like the drawbar, lugbolts, etc.) are the same as those used in the larger tractors such as the Model 790; in other words, the tractor is overengineered. The Model 4100 series has many fine features and is a joy to use but it isn't as heavily constructed as the Model 670. Someone might point out that the Model 4100 is as durable as it needs to be and this is probably true. However, speaking as a proud and happy owner of a Model 670, it's fun to own and use something that does it's work well and isn't a cause for concern. I have faith that my John Deere will outlast me and will probably be a source of happiness for a number of satisfied owners.

I have a Land Pride quick hitch and have been using it for a couple of years. Before I purchased it, my back and shoulders really complained after I connected a shredder or other implement. The Land Pride cost about $325; what seems to be the same design is available from Northern Tool & Equipment for $200. Once everything is set up the quick hitch is wonderful--fast, easy and minimal physical effort. However, two factors are of primary importance when considering a quick hitch--distance between the bottom hooks and vertical distance to the top hook. You can buy a quick hitch on which the top hook is welded in place and for a bit more money you can get one on which the top hook is adjustable. GET THE ADJUSTABLE ONE!!! I did and was very thankful that I had. Unfortunately, some of the 3 point connections on your implements will probably have to be moved or redone. For example, I had to redo the 3 point linkages on my Modern rear scoop and my Myers crane completely. I was able to use my John Deere shredder and my Bush Hog finish mower pretty much as is; however, I had to substitute a short length of heavy chain for the strap-metal upper linkages or the implements would not be able to adjust to the contours of the land being mowed. The inner measurement between the bottom hooks on my Land Pride quick hitch is about 26 1/2 inches and I have upper hook set at 18 inches. I believe that the bottom hooks on the Northern Tool hitch are a bit closer together. I really like my quick hitch and it saves a great deal of stress on my anatomy; however, it required time, money and effort to get everything set up initially. I also have all of my implements on dollies so that I can roll each one easily behind the tractor and hook it up. I purchased steel castors at Tractor Supply for under $5 each; these take great weight, don't wear out on a concrete surface and don't get flat on one side when standing in one place for an extended period. By the way, I have seen one or two quick hitches made by John Deere (or sold by them), but my dealer was very vague when I asked about them and didn't seem to have knowledge of them.

I have a Model 670 and want to change the transmission/hydraulic oil. My operator's manual shows the drain plug just in front of the drawbar, nestled in a "Y" shaped piece of metal that holds the drawbar. My Model 670 doesn't have a drain plug there--only a flat plate held on by four bolts. In fact there are two or three other things in the picture in the operator's manual that I don't have either. My Model 670 is as plain vanilla as you can get: no midmount PTO, no front-wheel drive, no filter canister for the transmission. I suppose I could drain the transmission through a plug on the cover over the screen for the transmission/hydraulic oil on the right side of the tractor; however, that doesn't seem to be placed low enough to drain all of the oil. What am I overlooking? I purchased the IT Shop Manual and that isn't any help either.

I had the same problem. I have one garage bay in which to store my tractor and implements--approximately 12 x 22 feet. My tractor is small (a JD Model 670)and by using dollies I can fit the tractor and implements in the one bay. The implements include a chain harrow, a crane, a flexible blade cultivator, a box blade, a scoop, a chipper, a water wagon (for watering plants and bushes), a shredder, a finish mower, and a blade. It's a little tight, but not bad. I have plenty of room to back in the tractor and to pull out individual implements for use. I purchased steel swivel castors from Tractor Supply (a little under $5.00 each for use on the dollies; rubber or plastic castors don't stand up well on concrete and get flat on one side standing under a heavy load.

Murf--There are solutions and then there are elegant solutions and I think your use of compressed air to transfer diesel fuel is just that!! A couple of reservations: (1) acknowledging my personal klutsyness, I would most likely spray myself in the face at some point in the process; and (2) if there happened to be contamination in the last bit of fuel in the container (condensation or sediment) that normally would be emptied out as a precaution, this would probably be sucked up and put in the tractor. However, I plan to try this; it sounds like a great idea.

I have a Valby Model 140 chipper which I use with my John Deere Model 670 tractor (18 HP; 16.5 HP PTO). The Model 140 is direct drive; the Model 160 has a belt to incease the rpms of the disk. This is desirable; the Model 140 will plug up rather easily because the disk is not turning fast enough to really throw out the chips and brush. It never clogs with chips; only with juniper needles, leaves and vines--and then when they are damp and/or moldy. Other than that I am pleased with the Valby. It is really heavy duty: thick steel plating, super-heavy roller bearings, 220 pound disk, two 4 x 8 inch knives, low-mounted chute (much safer), very nicely assembled (everything positioned correctly and the welding excellent), knives easily changed. This is actually a small commercial machine. I have cut large limbs and small tree trunks up to 5 inches easily. I don't have a power feed so I control the intake rate by hand; naturally this also means that I have to stand there and feed everything and this really slows things down. I estimate that the machine will pay for itself in about a year (calculated on the basis of renting a chipper locally for $100 a day and not considering hiring anyone to help). I will never wear out this machine; it's bulletproof. I mount it on the back of a Quick Hitch and because of the 600 pound weight of the chipper the front end of the tractor becomes very light even with 200 pounds of suitcase weights on the front.

Someone dealt with this a few weeks ago for those of us with PCs and Windows 98. Simply click the right button on the mouse to pull up a menu and then move the cursor to PRINT and click the left button. Works great for me

I purchased a 1999 left over at a auction last fall 4x4,loader,strong running machine,they do smoke more than average,plenty of tork,downpresher was nice at the hitch,I did sell the tractor 2 months later for what I payed for it,I was
afraid of getting stuck with a machine that I payed good money for might be hard to get parts for and I couldnt find anyone to honor the warranty, I found plenty in usa and canada having a good supply of parts .If I found another one cheap I would consider getting one again if it was 2 wheel drive,I was told by several people that the front end is week with ratcheting type hubs,good luck,glenn

I had this happen when my tractor was new--about 2 hours on it. It scared the living daylights out of me, but it stopped doing it before I could race over to the tractor and shut it off. Later, one of the other members of the discussion group reported experiencing the same thing and was told that this could be caused by water in the fuel. In my case, this made sense as my tractor had sat on the dealer's lot for awhile.

Hello: I have a Landspride quick hitch and am quite happy with it. However, it was expensive ($318) and I had to modify the 3-pt. hookup on my crane, scoop, and cultivator. The problem lies in the fact that the pins are mounted in different widths as you go from one piece of equipment to another. My Landspride quick hitch requires pins to be about 27 1/2 inches apart. Also, the vertical height is crucial; 18 inches seems to be about right for my hitch. I purchased a hitch on which the top hook is adjustable. This is important. I could have purchased a similar quick hitch from Northern Tool or Tractor Supply at lower cost--$169 for a hitch without an adjustable top hook or $189 for one with an adjustable hook. These hitches require pins on the implements to be slightly closer together and I would have had to modify more implements to use them. So, if you're interested in this type of hitch, measure the distance between the pins on your implements and the vertical distance required for the top hook. Once everything is set up to fit, a quick hitch really reduces the amount of pushing and lifting you have to do. I must confess, however, that I also made dollys with castors for each of my heavy items (scoop, blade, chipper, front of shredder). This allows me to store them more compactly in the shed and also to more easily align them with the quick hitch. I've read good things about the Freedom Hitch; you might check previous discussions.
