Subtract $20.00 per hour was what I was told by the dealership where I had purchased my tractor when I asked about trading towards another model while it was in the shop under warranty covered repair work last season. At the time it had 60 hrs on the clock and was about 10 weeks old.

Craig, that aluminum cover is the end cap for the SCV. Removing it gives access to the valve spools. Under the large caps are check valve assemblies. To the left of the SCV body facing down are two plugs. According to the parts manual the available rear auxiliary hydraulic kit(part # BM19290)is plumbed in there.

Brand loyalty is not an issue with me. Its no secret the 4100 is built by Yanmar. I agree poor workmanship should be unacceptable for the consumer. There is entirely to much low quality products being produced today. I'm just trying to understand if the metal particle contamination originally being discussed is going to be a problem to the life of the tractor. Seems to be a common discovery. It would be great if a lot of this work came back to the states. Will it? I don't know.

Cliff, just for the record I use a 6ft rear blade on my JD4100. With R4's I can rotate the blade a full 360. Can't do it at full lift but the trick is to lower the blade some to level it out.

Rick T, sounds to me like you made out quite well. Just for the record what tires did you get, and do you have shear pin or slip clutch and chains on that rotary cutter. You can see some on line prices at this web site

Everybody's got their favorites. Certainly sounds like an exceptional choice. Won't do a thing for the price of my John Deere stock though

Richard I don't use skid shoes on my tractor blade. I have them on my truck mounted snowplows. They don't cause any real problems when I back drag the blade. The snow certainly won't roll as well as with the curved edge. Hopefully Jim will tell you more.

Larry, I would be interested in hearing some details about your starting problem. I also have a new 4100.(delivered Jul 2000) Recently it has been stored outside under a tarp in -0 temps. Ran it yesterday. Started easy, worked the preheat cycle (3 sec each) 3 times before firing, just a wisp of smoke, and smooth idle. Throttle was just cracked open a little about 1/4 open When it was garaged it seemed to smoke more on startup. The book says to warmup at 1/2 throttle. Start at 1/2 to 3/4. Do you use that much throttle on startup?

Klay, the oil was purchased at a John Deere dealership. It's labeled TORQ-GARD SUPREME 5w-30. Price is decent too! Less than $2.00 a quart.

My 4100 with 410 loader will do the same over time. If your nearby you can hear it move now and then as it gradually leaks down.

Larry, I would guess that the reason that the mid PTO does not slow as suddenly as the rear is probably due to the fact that it is turning a lot faster. Maximum 2150 rpm vs. 580 rpm. I haven't had opportunity to use my mid pto yet. I would think it would be like stopping a car or truck. The faster your speed the longer it takes to stop. I would also reason that the longer the braking is applied before coming to a complete stop,the faster the friction material would wear down. The overruning clutch seems like a good idea to me and I will eventually get one for use with my cutter and tiller. Your definately right that this has no bearing on why the engagement lever is hard to move on the 4300.

Tannenwald I agree. NEVER GOT A "SAFTEY NOTICE" FROM CHRYSLER OR H-D WHERE THEY INFORMED ME OF A PROBLEM THEN SENT THE PARTS AND TOLD ME TO PUT THEM ON. They all say RECALL! Well I experienced a real bad cracking sound while using my 410 Loader to it's full potential on Friday of last week. I then crawled under the tractor and I inspected the loader mounts and found 3 loose bolts. At the same time I developed an oil leak between the clutch mounting and engine block. I tightened the bolts the bolts to the manuals recommended torque. The loader still makes the cracking sounds under load. The more I use it the more the oil leaks. Saturday the package arrived from Deere with the safety latch for the loader. Today the service rep came on a field call and the first question asked was if I had received the safetly latch package from Deere. He seemed extremely concerned. I ordered the tractor in June it was delivered July 27 and the letter on the safety latch is dated May 30th. So why didn't Deere have their dealers install it before delivery. Well tomorrow the 4100 makes a trailer trip back to the dealer to be fully diagnosed. The techs concern was if I would have it back in time for snow removal duty. I asked if what I was doing was too much for its intented use and the rep said "You probably used it harder than most but thats what they're made for".

Duane, I'm going to take the JD position, mainly because I have a 4100 hydro. I am very pleased with with it so far (40 hrs). I also seriously considered both the 7500 and the B2400. The main reasons I went for the DEERE was loader capacity, the position control option on the rockshaft and the pedal arrangement (side by side fwd /reverse & brake on the left) which I really like. The heel/toe arrangement just wasn,t comfortable for me and the the 2400 was being replaced with the 2410,which translated to more $$$ and availability problems. The 4100 has R4's a good comprimise. I've used a 5ft rock rake, a 6ft grader blade, a 4ft rotary mower, and a 50'' tiller all with good results. Also been working on moving 200 yards of stoney sand fill. Half gone half to go. Not what I intended to do but the dozer left for other work and hasn't been back.

I agree. My new (18hrs) JD 4100 exhibits the same symptoms. Slightly depressing the hydro pedal allows the range selector to easily engage the needed position. On the Deere you also can use your left foot on the brake pedal to eliminate any chance of unwanted movement of the tractor. Also my 4WD lever was difficult to shift initially and even popped out of position a couple of times. After a few hrs. of running that engages much easier too.

Yea, I hope the delivery guy figures that out too. They told me that "he used to be a furnace guy". What that has to do with tractors I don't know. The key was in the pedal travel. Even with the lever released there was less than an inch of movement at the brake pedal. Now that its working right there is a lot more pedal travel. New question: Any one using a bucket tooth bar? I see that there are different styles of teeth used. Is one type any better than another? There are a lot of rocks and stones in the material I need to dig.
