I had the same symptoms with my 420 loader. I'm pretty certain you have blown one of the lift cylinder seals. The clue is when you try to lift slowly that the loader drops. This is because the oil you are metering in to lift is leaking past the piston seal and back to return. when you lift fast you put more oil in than can leak past and the loader still goes up.

IT cost about $75 for the dealer to fix the cylinder a year ago. Search this site for leaking lift cylinders to learn how to test which one it is, or post here and I'll add the instructions.

Here is a trick to using a water level. Buy 3/8" clear tubing and tape one end into a milk jug. Fill the milk jug full and then lower the tube until about 1/2 the jug is empty. This way you'll have enough water volume to fill the tube, and you can hold the free end of the tube as high as you want without worrying about losing water. Also, I believe it makes the water level more accurate.

Last year the right 420 loader lift cylinder blew the piston seal, and yesterday the left cylinder seal blew while I was lifting some landscape rocks. I can't understand why it failed with less than 130 hours on the 1999 model 4200 tractor.

I looked at the hyd schematic in the service manual and
don't see any signs of a line relief (There is of course the
system relief valve). Does anyone know for sure that there
is a line relief?

The boom gets priority on Caterpillar excavators because I think the boom takes more oil flow (and hence time) to get out of the trench. Better to have your stick stop extending
than the boom stop lifting for cycle time efficiencies.

Excavator hydraulics are pretty elaborate since they include
clever oil recirculation loops and anti-drop valves as well.

I guess I don't know for sure that a backhoe boom would get priority, but I think the first valve stack in a pressure beyond system would get dibs on the flow.

Your comment about the loader dropping 6-8" before going up is familiar-- my 4200 did the same thing with 420 loader. My problem was a blown out piston seal on one of the lift cylinders. It also allows the bucket to drift down.
They rebuilt my cylinder and it works fine now. Note that I saw rust spots on the cylinder wall when I shined a light
in the dissassembled cylinder (but didn't think until too late to do something about it). I wonder if some cylinders
have rust in them from sitting new on the dealers lot before
assembly?

The biggest advantage I see of the mid mount mower is that you can very accurately steer along the edge of a building,fence, or other stuff. You don't have to crane
your neck looking behind you. It also gives a shorter tractor package which is more maneuverable.

The deere mmm hangs from the tractor, so you get a long wheelbase to take out uneven ground. I think Kubota's decks
run wheels on the which must also work just fine.

Like you said, the mmm is more expensive, is a pain to remove, and is in the way sometimes. I wrestled a long time
on which way to go, and still don't know if I made the right
choice or not since I've never tryed a rear mower.

It cost me $50 labor and $11 for the seal kit to rebuild one lift cylinder on the 420 loader. I'd suggest:
1. swapping the lift and tilt hoses at the quick connects first. If the leakage problem switches from tilt to lift then you have a valve spool problem. If not then you have
a leak in one of the pair of cylinders.

2. There are instructions posted here on how to determine
which cylinder is leaking.

I have a 4200 Deere, and I would have to agree it is underpowered if you are going to do much roading. It does not take much of a hill at all to bog it down. Other than that, the power is fine for mowing and such.

this sort of goes along with sidehill stability. I learned that it is possible for my deere 4200 to popout of 4wd unexpectedly. I was mowing nose down a pretty steep bank, and it suddenly went into 2wd. The back tires only couldn't hold it, and I slid about 10 ft into a tree. Glad I had the loader on, and glad the tree was there.

I learned another cheap lesson...Maybe I shouldn't depend on 4wd to keep me out of trouble, but be ready to drop the loader for the worlds best parking brake.

I can only get about 30 minutes of mpeg1 movie on a normal cd. A DVD burner can get much more on its cd.

On the other hand, 30 minutes of home movies is as much as anyone can stand!

The jerkiness problem I had was the inability to creep forward at a snails pace. I could do it when I got the tractor but then noticed a lunge.

I have a 4200 that wouldn't start after a few weeks non-use. While jump starting it I noticed lots of corrosion on the battery posts and into the oil cooler as well.

My dealer said they are aware of the problem, and now have
a replacement battery cap with a vent hose that funnels
the gases away from the radiator.

Even though my tractor is a couple of months out of warranty, they agreed to replace the oil cooler, and prorated the battery.

I'd suggest everyone take a look at their battery and
change to the new vent cap design to avoid this problem.
