I have a JD GX335 garden tractor with 48" deck and power flow bagging system. I think I paid around $7000 2 years ago. This is (or was) the cheapest model that had power steering and hydraulic lift. It has been a great machine, which I have done some incredible jobs with. With weights, tire chains and a front blade you can even do smaller landscape and gravel work.

I had similar problems using my HD Frontier PHD last summer. On some holes the digging would stop when I got through the top soil and hit the hard clay. When I took a close look at the clay you could see that the tip of the bit was actually "burning" the clay from just spinning instead of digging. It was obvious to me that the bit was not aggressive enough for the soil condition. I did some looking around and found a bit made by Brush Hog that had a replaceable carbide cutter that I felt would be a big help. I did not purchase it at the time, as they wanted $90.00?? for it, but before I start fencing this summer, I will. There are many different designed bits out there that may be a big improvement depending upon what you have now. Also not all bits are interchangeable.

I have a JD4510 with 12/12 power reverser. My decision to buy this combination was economics. I wanted the biggest JD with implements that I could afford. With that said, I would prefer an ehydro if money was not a consideration. I find that after 230 hrs, that I still need to think about using the PowRev. At times, I find myself using both the clutch and the PowRev at the same time. No need for that!! I also do not like to use the PowRev when using the rotary cutter at PTO engine speeds in B range. Maybe it is all mental, but it seems like abuse to be "power shifting" at 2600 RPM. I will lower the RPM some before shifting directions. A hydro transmission would be much easier on the drive train in this application. I think it works great in all applications that don't require a constant high RPM and constant direction changes.

IMHO, buy the largest 4WD tractor you can afford, especially with that many acres. I have a JD4510 and I wonder at times if I have enough tractor. I have a JD MX6 rotary cutter and the 4510 is the smallest tractor recommended for this 6ft cutter. For me, I just couldn't justify the money for the "Bells and Whisles" of a 4610 or 4710. With that said, I would have chosen a 4710 if money had not been an object.

I just completed my 50 hour hydraulics/transmission oil change on my 4510. I sure wouldn't attempt it with a MMM installed. I had enough trouble containing the 9.2 gallons of oil. You will need to catch the oil under the drain plug and under both filters as you remove them. I used a 10 gal "wash tub" and still spilled some oil on the floor moving it under the filters. I will be in the market for a bigger container next time.

I found hundreds, if not thousands of very small particles on the pickup screen. Keep in mind that this is a good sized pickup screen and I doubt that there was enough to plug up 1/2 of one percent of the screen.

About the Frontier equipment. I am not sure how much of the Frontier line is Woods. From what I have found the box blades are, and I believe they are an exact copy in green paint. The post hole diggers are made by BEFCO. This would lead me to think that John Deere may put out for bid each piece of equipment.

I would have like to have the 4710 too, but I also needed to watch my budget. I purchased the 4510. According to JD list prices when I purchased, there was a substantial difference between the 4510 with 12/12 powRev at $21,279 and the 4610 ehydro at 24,139, with the 4710 ehydro listing at 25,909. You do get more bells and whistles with the ehydo's, but I felt I really didn't need them. I opted to use the money saved by buying the 4510, to have factory top and tilt kit, R4 tires, fwd and back lights ETC. installed.

At times I get this "fog" under the dash cover on my 4510. I believe it is just moisture that condenses and collects under the plexiglass. I don't really worry about it that much as it goes away after a while.

I forgot to add in my post above that I also add 200lbs of add on weight to the rear to counterbalance the weight of the 48" blade.

I am thinking about purchasing a Frontier 72" box blade. I am considering their "medium duty" box due to the added weight. I am concerned that this box has a hinged back blade. I have a hydraulic top link and I would think that with the swinging back blade I would loose some of the control when depositing material with the top link extended. Has anyone used this type of box blade? What are the pros and cons of a swinging back blade?

Deere Tech/Anyone,

In your previous post you spoke of "proper breakin". I just took delivery of a new JD4510 from a large AG dealer. I don't remember seeing a dyno in their shop, so lets say that the engine was not broke in on the dyno. What is the best method for tractor diesel engine break-in after delivery? I looked for guidance from the JD manual and I didn't find one word about engine break-in. That would lead me to think that normal usage is sufficient??

I am in negotiations with the JD dealer for a new 4510. When I have mentioned that I would like to have the TOP AND TILT KIT installed, they give me a funny look and ask "what would you want with that". I get the feeling that they don't have much experience with it. But quess what! I don't either. It is in their option list and it looks to me like it would be handy to tilt and rotate a rear implement from the tractor seat. I will have about 1700 ft of gravel road to maintain and will have a lot of landscaping to do as I develop my property. Does anyone have any experience with this option? Do you like it? Would you purchase it again? Comments?<br>
