Just a quick "howdy" as I'm new to this forum.
I have a TC33D with a 7308 FEL that I purchased new in the fall of 2002 and to this point I am very satisfied with it's performance. I purchased a Woods 5' brush hog and have cleared off an old 10 acre hay field that I'd like to keep mowed as yard/play area. I've been mowing the field with the hog but have been interested in the mid mower for mowing around the house and I'm wonderering how well it might work to maintain the field? Keep in mind that I've removed all the rocks but the terrain is far from smooth and not golf course quality. I didn't want to make the investment if I'm just going to damage it.

Hello 5picker, I use a 6 ft. mid mount mower on my TC33D.
I used it last fall to mow down 3 acres of old fields that had not been mowed all year. With the MMM I had to go over the fields at least 2 and sometimes 3 times to get all the high grass and broomsage knocked down. I set the mower heighth to app. 5 inches. There are small limbs and sticks, less than 1 inch, in the edge of the field and they were no problem. My suggestion is that it you plan on mowing the fields every 1 to 2 weeks then a MMM would do fine, if you only plan on mowing them 3 or 4 times a year I would continue to use the brushhog and save the money you would have spent on a MMM for other things. In my case I also mow a 5 acre yard weekly with my MMM, and last week I pined it up out of the way when I used the brushhog on the old fields. It took a lot less time with the hog, only had to go over it once. ....

Since you are calling it a field still and not a yard, I would think that the brush hog should do a fine job. Mine seams to cut very good (for a field quality cut) If you plan on showing a bit maybe not so good. Me personelly, I would keep the cash in my pocket and not buy the mmm unless I planned on planting grass and keeping it more yard than field. My .02 ....

My former neighbors had this same situation. They were bush hogging their 5+ acre front yard with a farm tractor and mowing a small area around the house with a riding mower. After they saw my 3-point mounted finish mower, they got one for themselves, and mow everything with it. The 3ph mowers are considerably cheaper than a MMM. I have to say, that from the road the bush hog mowed field looked fine.

Thanks folks, I appreciate the input. My dealer is going to bring a trade in TC33D w/MMM over this week and let me use it a few days so I'll get a good idea then. I plan to keep the field mowed and the Hog has been doing an OK job but the Lawn & Garden tractor we use around the house is on it's last legs so that's why the interest in the MMM. How well do the pull behind finish mowers do around the house. Can you really get close & around obstacles? ....

You can get close but you have a lot of tail swing. rfm are good for wide open areas with minimal obstacles. mmm are better to get around obstacles and tend to scalp a little less the nh mmm are great because they have a spring float. they move over the terrain very well.
Just my opinion ....
