I am planning to purchase either a BX22 or TC24D tractor. I like the BX22 because of price. I plan on building a pole barn and adding a deck on my house which requires 42"-46" deep holes for footings. Will the BX22 & TC24D handle a 12" dia PHD that will go to that depth? I think the TC24D is taller and looks like will have no problems but the BX22 is shorter. Any imput would be helpful.

Scotter, here in central NY do to stone population I'd say neither as you couldn't find enough people to keep the auger going straight or out of stones. Now I will tell you the BX with an auger extension added while in the hole would do it. I believe the TC might get that deep with out but I doubt it as I believe you will still need to go up another frame size larger tractor to use an auger that long. ....

Because of the size of my property, I wanted to stay in the smaller size tractors. Maybe I will just use the backhoe for putting in post.

Scooter, Sonotube I think is what it's called, the state uses it on most all jobs works great when dug by a backhoe, just fill with concrete. If you knew ahead the fellows with the truck augers can be reasonable on an off day. One other point that I forgot would be the size of the auger gear box, many for the smaller tractors are limited to 9" auger diameter. I have had customers put on larger as all the drive shafts are about the same either round or hex shaft drive. ....

Many of the cottages and even big decks around here are built on sonnotubes. By code they go below frost and are wrapped with frost barrier to minimize frost heave. They work great but for some reason aren't approved for residential construction. I think the framing may be a little different than for a pole barn though. The tubes also can be put on concrete pads to support more load than a pole end.
If it's a sizable barn, the hoe may be a good idea. When I bought my 12" auger one dealer said that he just had 14" augers in stock. Farmers preferred 14" ones for building pole barns. The bigger hole allows more room to plumb up the poles. Corner staking isn't always right on nor are markers. The auger tip doesn't always start right on a marker and the holes don't always go straight down. Don't think it would be a good time to have poles in the holes and braces tacked up and then find that several holes had to be shaved to get things plumbed and squared. Besides, then you can put 14" flat rocks on the bottom. ....

I was using my TC24D with a PHD yesterday. It has enough clearance to lift standard length auger bits with 1" to spare over level ground. The neighbors BX won't do that. As for 12" bits, they shake the tractor pretty good when digging into clay!!! I usually use a 9" but for tree planting I use a 12". I have very heavy clay soil but no stones. ....
