Does anyone have a suggestion how I might keep my Yanmar 1700 running cooler? The radiator has been flushed inside and out and I have it filled with just antifreeze, no water. I know that the Yanmar does not have a water pump. Also, what RPM should I run while operating a 4' Rotary mower?

a 50-50 water and antifreeze mix has more cooling capacity then straight antifreeze. Put the water back in the radiator. ....

Len? Care to share the info? ;-)If I remember right the correct mix of antifreeze and water is 30% antifreeze and 70% water.The tractor has what is called a thermosiphon cooling system.From what I gather it needs the water concentration ro work properly.Keith ....

I'm with Len..... YOU NEED WATER. I have a YM155 that used to overheat during any medium mowing. And this was with a brand new Rad. I drained some of the 50/50 mixture, and added more water. Not a problem since then. The higher antifreeze concentration does not work well with the thermosiphon.I would imagine it got hot quick with the 100% antifreeze ....

Yep. Yanmar recommends 60/40 water to antifreeze. Mine does ok on 50/50. When I tried it on 100% antifreeze she got hot fast!It doesn't hurt to clean the scale out of the radiator if it is crudded up. I use Prestone radiator flush for 15 minutes at half strength instead of hours at full strength as Prestone recommends. Once every 5 or 10 years is enough to keep it clean. Flush it afterwards with a garden hose for a long time to get all the acid out. Roger L. ....

Ron,I would HIGHLY discourage the use of anything higher than a 50% antifreeze mixture.Mainly because I found out the hard way when I was 16. In thinking that if 50% solution was good, 100% was better. This thinking eventually cost me a new radiator in my '86 Dodge Shelby. I wastold that antifreeze becomes corrosive/acidic over time, and aluminum radiators are the first to notice.He said that water is used for two reasons, first it helps to control the eventual corrosive effects of Antifreeze.And secondly, it gives antifreeze better heat dissapation properties.also, it seems as if no-one does this, but distilled water is supposed to be the best thing to keep your system clean. Appearantly quite a bit of the scale/grime in radiators are minerals that were boiled out of the water.This film or scale will obviously decrease your cooling ability. Not sure this will cure your problem, but its a goodstart:) ....

Actually the reason to mix antifreeze and water is chemistry - when you mix 2 liquids, it results in a higher boiling point and lower freezing point than either liquid individually. The best % will be different for different combos, but for ethylene glycol (antifreeze) and water the best mix is right around 50/50. ....

MAXIMUM 30% antifreeze. You can try even less in weather when freezing is not a concern. 1700s tend to be prone to overheating due to the lack of a water pump. ....

We are a Yanmar dealer and specialize in grey market Yanmars. I am with Wayne 30% anti freeze 70 % water max ratio. Anymore will cause overheating. Actually less antifreeze is better if freezing is not an issue. I have seen several Yanmar engines damaged from overfilling with antifreeze. You say your radiator has been flushed, but have you taken it to a radiator shop and had it boiled out and flow tested ? Flushing is good, but will not remove deposits if it is really stopped up. Could be you have a bad head gasket or cracked head that can cause overheating also. We have seen this problem in a few 1700 series tractors. ....
