I'm looking at a Yanmar 276D at a JD dealer. The machine has a factory loader, about 1200 hrs, and seems to be in average condition. Rear turf tires are at about 50%, and front tires are old truck tire with 0% Any ideas what would be resonable?I would have prefered a JD850, but this it might be out of my price rangeThanks

A nice tractor. I have an old spec. sheet on the 276D and can generally answerquestions. It is a bit more tractor than the 850 - even allowing for my well-knownYanmar bias! :-) I think of it as being more like the 950. The Power-shift wasstandard. BTW, power steering was NOT standard. It was an accessory. The valueis about an additional $1000. It is available from JD. On price, this spring I've looked at three Yanmar 276D's...all have allstandard accessories and factory loaders, power shift, and ran good. The first one was a landscaping and tilling tractor. I would classify thebody as "beat" - though it ran and worked good @ 2000+ hours. 4 Unusuallynice cultivators, box blades, such. Way overpriced at $13,500. Someone bought itbefore the weekend. The next one was from a golf course. Had a heated cab. Showed lots of usefrom lots of people. Many dents and some oil leaks. bucket bent. Ran just fineas it was always serviced by the dealer. Needed front axle and driveshaft sealswhich is typical of this model. Dealer installed these, washed it, and it soldquickly. I don't know for how much, the asking price was 11,500. I consideredbuying this one but didn't want a cab and it did not have power steering. At 3000hrs, I also considered it to be overpriced. Another was a cream puff at $9000 less than 1000 hrs and with everything. Ionly heard about this one because it was gone before I got there. I was preparedto buy this one. So was everyone else! There is an '85 currently advertised in a Colorado paper with loaderfor $8500. It has been in the paper for a few weeks. I haven't gone to see itbecause I've been playing with my "new" Yanmar 336D. I don't know why ithasn't sold. I may go look just out of curiousity. This last year has seen a large increase in the price of used compacts aroundhere. Two of the ones above are overpriced IMHO, although both sold quickly. The creampuff was a rare deal. I would expect one like you describe to be belowthe lower end of the price range....maybe 7500. I am basing this on the expectationthat it has power steering, because the fact that it has car tires on the frontis a big no-no in my book indicating a probable lack of maintenance.... Roger L ....

Roger-Thanks for the info. Any chance I could get you to fax me the spec sheet? This is kind of a stupid, but could you shed some light on the way this trans works? Never used one before. Does the 276Dhave a live pto? How about an estimate on what my YM155 is worth, I was thinking about trading, but i would most likly take a beating. ....

The YM276 does not have live pto, but can be operated like it has one. The transmission can be shifted without clutching. The gears are shifted by hydraulically activated clutches. ....

Shucks, I had this reply all typed out and the comfuser ate it...:-(I could fax the sheet, but it would probably be better to scan it in. What format do you want to see it in? Better contact me off the list for this.About the transmission and PTO, len has described it. Now I can't rememberwhat it was that he said, But I remember nodding my head and saying "that'sright" to myself as I read it. Yanmars tranny is unique in that it isa shiftable on-the-go tractor transmission. And it clutches itself. The foot clutch is for fine control at very low speed or for clutching the PTO. Frankly I'd try to trade in the 155. You never know! Roger L ....
