Hello Board!
I've been searching for a rear tiller for my 4wd B6200 for several weeks now. I almost bought a new Howard last week, but backed off for financial reasons. Low and behold, a used Howard w/slip clutch appears in classifieds and it looks good. My concern is that's it's 48". Is that too big? According to the Howard manual, this unit is made for the 5100,6100,7100,and it's rated within the hp range of the tractor, so I assume it will work. However, I've had people tell me that I should stick to 38" or 42". I need opinions about the 48".

It's a little unusual for an after-market manufacturer to list specific tractors for their implements. It's more common to give HP recommendations. The lowest recommendation given by Land Pride for their tillers starts at 17 - 25 pto HP for models from 34" - 58" so maybe the 12.5 pto hp of a 6200 is a little light for a 48" tiller.
The actual HP required does depend a lot on the ground tilled, depth and ground speed and there's a lot an operators can do to reduce HP requirements. Some jobs may be difficult or take a lot of time. A tractor with HST that is able to go very slowly at pto rpm is good. Soil can be broken up with scraifiers, a middle buster etc. before tilling etc. so perhaps the 6200 could deal with a 48" tiller pretty well but I'd probably think a bit narrower.

I have been tilling with a BEFCO 158 for, well let's see now...it's going on 16+ years. This 3pt tiller is 58 inches wide with clutch and offset, complete with offset or opposing "L" tines. I can till wet soil, clay, lawn, sand, just about anything you want opened up!
The biggest element to be considered, is the weight. The weight of not just the tiller attachment that will load your 3pt assembly, however the material weight that you are tilling as well. Keep in mind, that as you lift the tiller up upon exiting the track, your lifting the weight of both the implement as well as the slop, however wet it may be, together. BEFCO, has a great unit because it allows you to have the best of both worlds...light weight yet very rugged built, along with the ability to utilize a wider machine.
Oh...did I forget to mention, I have been using my 58" on my B5200 DT at 13.5hp engine, 11hp pto, with absolutely no problems. As TomG eluded, the operator's wits or smarts can either make or break the play!

I priced a 44 inch at Corriher Impliment today,,920$ with a slip clutch,,he is "corimpco.com" it is a nice looking unit ....
