Thanks to all of you for the advice on my last post. The dealer just delivered my ym2000 this morning with new 4 foot rotary cutter- drove it a couple hours and love it so far. My question is- I got to looking around and checking fluids and the engine oil looks pretty nasty to me (the dealer told me beforehand that THEY didn't change it) so I'd like to get it changed before running it too much more. Was wondering if anyone knows of a cross reference filter that I can get at the autoparts store or if they know the stock filter brand and # (mine was painted over) so that I can cross reference it myself? Any help would be appreciated. Also if anyone is in the market for a Yanmar I highly recommend Maynard Tractor in Brownsboro,AL-They were very straightforward and honest about their machines.

I never wanted to deal with all the equivalency issues related to use of after-market filters. They have been discussed at length quite a few times here and should be in the archives. I don't put that many hours a year on my tractor so even dealer filter prices don't amount to a significant annual expense. It's just easier for me to get them from my dealer.
I think it's good to change all fluids and filters on a used machine(coolant included) unless the maintenance history is known for certain. Engine oil from diesel tractors is pretty gunky stuff though and it's condition shouldn't be judged the appearance compared to gas automotive oil. Tractor oil will be even more sooty if the engine idles a lot or runs cool. The tendency of diesels to soot and acid up oils is why there are diesel rated oils that should be used.
Every time I dump my used oil at the auto garage place, the owner comments 'Oh yeah it's that gunky tractor stuff' and the oil I dump has about as much small gas engine oil as tractor oil in it.

Yeah I'm of the same opinion that it's a good idea to change the oil and filter on a used machine- that's why I'm so desperate to get it changed. But see that's why I was hoping somebody could at least give me the stock filter # (I don't know if it's a Wix filter or what) because I don't even have that right now (mine has a nice coat of grey frame paint on it). If I go to the Yanmar dealer( 35 miles away)I have no way of knowing that the filter he gave me is correct. ....

A WIX or NAPA 1334/51334 or 1344/51344 is right out of the WIX/NAPA book. I have been using them for several years. Those two will fit most Yanmars and several other grey tractors and excavators. The fuel filter is almost as important, 3262 or 3263 if it is the longer one. I always keep spare fuel filters around, it is the most common repair I deal with. ....

Thanks I really appreciate the #'s- it was gonna drive me nuts until I could get the oil and filters changed. Have you had any luck with cross referencing the air filter as well? I haven't checked with my dealer yet(just got the tractor on Saturday) but the only place I've seen on the internet that lists it in their parts has 20-something dollars on this thing! ....

Wix 46022 should work for the air filter. Baldwin B179 is another good number for the oil filter. ....
