Found a used JD870, 4X4, 440 loader, turf tires, 425 hours, 1994 model, $13,500. This machine is at a local John Deere dealer. He took it on trade from the original owner. I asked the dealer to run the history on the serial number. The one owner story checked out, hours checked out, all recalls were performed, no major repairs. This machine has not been repainted and its so clean it looks like its only about 6 months old. The dealer is coming out on monday to appraise my trade. Based on what I've seen it looks like a pretty good price on a machine in this condition. Any thoughts on tractor or price? (good or bad)

Jerry, found 2 870s at machinefinder.com listed by dealers:

1997 4x4 loader 443hrs $14,000
1993 4x4 loader 397hrs $13,500

so that tells me your 870 aint a great deal but average and by no means "high".

An answer to your other question, 440 loaders were also put on 970s and 1070s so aside from hydraulic pump differences, strength should be about the same as 430. Chuck from greenias told me back when 440s came out he thought they were too loose and noisy compared to what they replaced (80 loader)

....

Well, the dealer came out on Monday and we agreed on a price for my trade-in. The dealer had initially told me when I first looked at the 870 that he could finance it "like new". I assumed that this meant that I could get low rate financing (5.9) just like a new one. Well, now he does not remember saying this and is offering 10.9% financing. The thing about this that bothers me the most is that this is the second dealer to pull this 'bait and switch' financing on me. Do they learn this in tractor 'sales school'. This financing scam is a 'deal killer'. Too bad, it was a really nice machine. ....
