I have a JD 2355 that will not go into gear without grinding. I have tried to adjust the linkage to the required specifications per JD. When the engine is cold there is no problem putting the tractor in gear without grinding(forward or reverse and gear). When it gets to normal operating temp the tractor will grind while trying to put it into gear while at a stop. It seems like the clutch is not disengaging(i.e if you do not push a clutch in all the way and try to change gears you would expect it to grind) If it is the clutch and pressure plate does, anyone have an idea on the cost to replace. The tractor has 1400hours on it I got it about 2 months ago. Thanks in advance for your help

K-
I think what you are describing is normal. When the oil is hot, it can take five seconds or so for the gears to stop turning, whereas cold oil will stop them quicker. It has been my experience that clutches tend to hang up more when cold. You might try waiting this period of time and see if that eliminates it. A little grinding is generally not quite as destructive as it sounds, as long as the tractor is not lurching forward (or back) when you put it in gear. If that is happening after waiting a few seconds, I would say you have a problem. -Stan ....

If the tractor has the 4wd option, you might see if the grinding is less in 2wd. If the problem is a lot less in 2wd, then you might check if the front and rear tires are a standard set. Front axle wind-up from mismatched tire sets could cause hard shifting. ....

Thanks for the information. It seems like the longer I wait the more it will grind before putting it into gear(the gears spin faster and faster). Every once in a while maybe 1 out of 20 times when I do get it in gear the tractor will lurch forward. What it seems to be doing just as you described the gears continue to turn; however, it is regardless of how long I wait.(except when the engine is cold) I have had several JD in the past but have never encountered this type of problem before. I tried to adjust the clutch linkage again to allow for about 1 inch of free play and also tried other combinations from no freeplay to 2 inches but none seemed to help. The clutch is strong and not slipping once it is in gear and it is a two wheel drive without a front loader. ....

Well, I guess I'm stumped- the only thing I can think of before going inside is to make sure the linkage is tight at every juncture and is not flexing. I would think, though, that if this was the problem, reducing the free play to zero would have affected it. I'm assuming this is a dry clutch with standard gear (not power-reverser trans). ....

The lurching when going into gear does sound like clutch drag--at least in a dry clutch. I think some wet clutches do have a small lurch that is normal. Any drag should be minimal at a zero, or less, free-travel adjustment. I suppose a warped pressure plate could produce drag that normal adjustment wouldn't remove. However, a warped clutch likely could be detected by uneven power or chatter when the clutch is feathered at low engine rpm. A simple test might shed some light on the problem. At fairly high engine rpm, find a slope where the tractor will almost, but not quite roll when the TX is in neutral. Put it in gear with the clutch fully depressed. If the tractor moves, then the clutch is likely dragging. Unfortunately the test isn't very sensitive. If the tractor doesn't move, it doesn't exclude clutch drag as an explanation. If a warped clutch is the problem, I guess there is the possibility that it could become worse after a period of operation. ....

Hate to say it but I think you need to split the tractor and replace the clutch. Normally they do have a little longer life on those tractors but not much, did the tractor have a loader on it to begin with? ....
