Stuck Clutch on JD 950

OK guys, give me an opinion. My PTO clutch is stuck on my 950. It looks as if the only solution is to separate the tractor and repair/replace the clutch. The question is should I attempt this. I have replaced engines and transmissions on cars/trucks before so I am not concerned technically. I have never separated a tractor. My main concern is supporting both halves when separated. What does it take to safely separate and support the front and rear while you are working on it. Obviously, one half has to be rolled back to get between the two. Is an engine lift strong enough to hold up each half?I'm thinking I may give in and hire this one done.

Well, a JD950 isn't all that heavy. It doesn't takes long to separate them without danger. My partner just did his Massey Ferguson 50...which is several times the weight of the 950. He used an engine hoist. It is a fairly light weight cherry picker. He prefers to block up under the transmission and then separate by moving the front end forward.
BE CAREFUL of one thing....That is when you separate the tractor there is nothing to stop the front half from falling sideways because it rotates on the front axle pivot. Either block the pivot or support the front half from above - not from below.
That clutch problem is not unknown on those tractors. If you are going to store it for awhile be sure to block the clutch pedal. ....

I guess the 950, like my Ford 1710, doesn't have access to the bell-housing interior. On some model tractors, I've heard that rusted clutch plates can be freed with a big screwdriver and mallet. Roger's comment about the pivot point is one of those 'Oh yeah' things for me. Better to have an 'Oh yeah' now than an 'Oh no' or worse later. The repair manual for my 1710 says to wedge wooden blocks between the engine side rails and front axle. Procedure for other tractors may be different, but it strikes me that support from above may be safer. Anyway, it's the same issue and one that's easy to forget about. ....

Thanks guys. I had not even thought about the problem supporting the front. To use an engine lift, though, you would need to rig a sling to go under and around the front section just in front of the rear of the engine to connect to the lift hook. This, along with blocks, should hold the front relatively stable. The actual separation should be no more than disconnecting some linkages and removing about a dozen bolts holding the bell housing to the engine.
I may have to think about it for a while. In the meantime, I just engage the PTO before starting the tractor. Annoying but it keeps from grinding the gears. ....

I have split a number of Yanmar tractor to unstick clutches, but they were always the main clutch since the grey markets do not have PTO clutches. The last one took me 3 hours and 55 minutes from first bolt to last. It is important that you block the engine over the front axle. Usually a couple of wooden wedges do the trick. I use a roll around floor jack under the front and a bottle jack under the rear. Double check that everything is disconnect before you pull the halves apart. All the wires from the alternator, the hydraulic lines from the pump, the fuel line from the tank, and that little pesky vent tube line that I forgot the last time. ....
