Hi! I just found this board and what a pleasure it is! So much great information and so many helpful people. My daughter is bringing her horse home, which means we are in the throws of building a barn & pature. Although we only have two acres, it is now mostly all open. I am looking at a JD 4100 with loader that I am hoping will do the jobs of clearing snow (I live in New Hampshire), manure, field mowing, landscaping etc...I found a 1997 4100 with loader for $10,000. It has 160 hours on it and has been used by a home owner (original owner). What are your thoughts on the price and machine usage? Also, I am seeing a lot of Chinese tractors for sale cheap. Are they any good? Thanks, Kevin

Kevin, first off, 160 hours on a compact tractor is hardly broken in, so that is good. You didn't say if the 4100 is gear or hydrostatic transmission, but $12,500-13,500 would be my expected price on a new gear 4100 with 410 loader, and $15,000-16,000 if it was a hydrostatic. Add $150-250 for turf or R4 tires also. So if the unit has been maintained well and not beat up, I think that $10K is a fair price for a practically new gear 4100 as far as hours go, and it's a steal if it is a hydro. You'll still have to get a mower for your needs. Personally, my opinion on the Chinese tractors is you get what you pay for, maybe less in this case. Search on this board under keywords like chinese, nortrac, allied, etc. and you will get more information. Good luck. ....

Kevin, Iam doing almost exactly what you want to do on about the same size property. My 4100 is perfect for these uses. Gear or hydrostatic tranny, $10,000 is a steal. I have about $14,000 in my gear 4100 with 410 loader and mid-mount mowing deck. I recommend that you get the R4 tires for this use. The AG tires tear up the grass and the turfs do not have enough traction in my opinion. ....

I think it is a good price. A good alternative would be a Kubota BX2200. But for the money, if the 4100 seems the right size for you, it's a good deal.

Nice tractor - not even broken in. Nice price. In fact, at that price for a 4wd 4100 JD loader/compact you can use it a few years and probably get most of your money back. ....

Hi Kevin,
I have a 4100hydro also, purchased in July of 2000. Sounds like you did okay getting yours. Good luck, and happy tractoring. You're gonna enjoy it! And, with a horse, you're gonna find having that l'il compact to be extremely useful. I live in NH also - western part, a little village called Unity. I have 3.5 acres, and the 4100 is perfect for taking care of it. Hope to see you around!
