Does anyone have any information or comments on using a single or double moldboard (sp?) plow with a 4100. Also what size moldboard?? Need to buy one and want to know what to look for so that I don't go either to small or too big.Thank you....

Terry, unless you have mighty soft, loose, sand or such, I'd say a single moldboard is all you can pull. You don't want anything bigger than a 14"; which is probably the right size, but you might also consider a 12" if you can find one. ....

Terry, I've a 4100 HST and use a middle buster regularly, sometimes with a furrow and sometimes with a potato plow (hope that's the right term). Bird is absolutely right. I can pull it when my clay is wet, but don't even think about it if the clay is dry. The tooth will rise up and "glance" over the top of the hard ground. If the soil is moist, I can't imagine any problem pulling one moldboard, but never two. Best of luck. JonB ....

Thank both of you for the responses. I want to grow cover crops after we harvest to improve the soil and a moldboard seems to be the most effective way of turning the cover crop under. I have a potato/middle buster and it works quite well. Some of my soil has clay and the 4100 grunts a little when using it. But, it does work well. In fact, what I've started to do is to go over the areas multiple times. Little more work, but effective. Prior to getting the 4100, I used a 7 HP Troy Built tiller. I now can get a lot of work done much quicker and effectively. And have time to do the rest of the honey-do chores....

Terry, I think we're doing the same thing ... cutting multiple paths with the potato plow. I follow this up with the tiller, which breaks up the clods and leaves a nice seed bed. This winter I'm thinking of planting a cover crop and then tilling it under. I don't know if that is more or less effective than a moldboard, or that it would make much difference. Hopefully someone who knows can repond. I can say that using a tiller with the 4100 is loads less painful than the walk behind, and much quicker as you said. Best of luck. JonB ....

JonB, I primarily want to use the moldboard to turn over the cover crop in early spring so that it can decompose prior to using the tiller. You should not plant anything over the tilled cover crop for at least two weeks since the decomposition process removes nitrogen from the soil. Also, the moldboard forces the organic matter deeper into the soil to help it loosen up and become freeable. We're not totally organic farmers but use the basic principles because the make good sense. You take care of the soil and it takes care of you. ....

Terry, I also have a JD4100. I pull a 14" single moldboard plow with no problem. I do like to use some weight on the front when plowing though. The weight really helps the front wheels pull. I also have and recommend a subsoiler ripper. This is just the trick for hard ground when the plow won't work well. I also have a middle buster (potato plow). I can take or leave this implement (it works, just isn't all that handy). The best ground breaking and preparing combo for a compact tractor is: a subsoiler, moldboard plow, and a rototiller. I use a 52" tiller on my 4100. It tills with no effort at all. Today, I tilled my garden to a depth of 7" on the first pass, after first breaking the ground with the plow. ....
