bush hog vs finishing mower

My flail mower recently went out and I want to replace it with a bush hog or finishing mower. I have 8 acres . I would like a good looking cut, but don't want to cut more than every 2-3 weeks during summer, every 2 weeks in the spring. I don't know about the durability comparison on these cutters.I'm also not sure if a bush hog will give a good enough looking cut. Any advice ?

Dave,I hve both. If you want your 8 acres to look like lawn then a finish mower is the implement to use. However, a finish mower requires a relitively even surface and the grass must be just that - grass. No saplings or brush and no stumps or rocks. A rotary cutter (brush hog) works on even and uneven terrain and it will cut through brush and small saplings. Set up right it will give an even cut but nothing like what you get from a finish mower. A rotary cutter is also useful for a "first" cut if your grass gets to tall. The rotary cutter will go through when the finish mower will bog down or stall. A consideration favoring the finish mower is that in most cases you can pull a wider finish mower - i.e., 5' rotary cutter, 6' finish mower. Finish mowers cost more and they require more maintenance - belts, grease, and sharp blades - but they do a nicer job. If you can get a good result with an ordinary riding mower you can expect good results from a finish mower. If not, you will need a rotary cutter. ....

If your wanting to mow a few times a year,I would go with the Bush Hog type cutter.In taller grass a finish-mower will have a tougher time of it.No secret to getting a good cut with a rotary mower;keep the blades sharp.I looked for a long while trying to find a 5'rotary with twin rear gauge wheels.Bought a cutter and fabricated the rear wheel assembly.Cutter now mows as level as a finish-mower and will still cut heavy grass and light sprouts with no problems. ....

I use both (5' bushhog and 5' finish mower) and the other comments are right on target. If the areA is relatively smooth and you plan to cut every couple of weeks then a finish mower will do the job. I have had very poor results with the finishing mower in tall thick grass,the belts slip and generally get a poor result. A properly adjusted bushhog will do a fine job unless you are wanting a lawn type apperance. If spped is a consideration you will be able to bushhog the 8 acres much quicker than using a finish mower. ....
