Howdy! I've been following the board for quite a while now, heres my first question, locally advertised Yanmar model F15D 19HP with new allied front loader, new 4' box, 3spd trans, hi-lo, diff lock approx 1000hrs, R4's all around, for $8700. is the model supposed to be the 1501D? the seller says it's from japan through canada. painted green and yellow. I saw it briefly and it looked in very good shape, will take it for a drive in next week or so but I am thinking price too high? experts...what do I have here? thanks in advance for any input. and yes, I'm also still looking for a used kubota or JD

Jim, the model could be a misprint like you say..In which case it would be a YM1501D, but it could also be one of the newer "F series" Yanmars that are just starting to be imported now on the grey market. I haven't seen many of these, but I'm told they have all the bells and whistles plus a modern wide flat driver's platform unlike the more traditional older tractors where you sat with your feet straddling a center hump. The price you are told would be about $1000 dollars high around here....which is OK when the machine is nice.
But several things about the description catch my eye in a less positive way. You need to ask them some serious questions and here are a couple to get your suspicions working: One is that 1000 hours is both a round number and is a lot of hours on an F series tractor. Of course anyone can fiddle an hour meter in a moment, but if so why put the hours so high? And why would any tractor need painting so young? If it was weather damage, then what else is prematurely old? And why not paint it as what it is - A Yanmar instead of a psuedo Deere? (note the snarl in my voice now.....this paint thing really puts me off....this is because I LIKE Yanmars). And since these tractors didn't come with R4s and because tire diameter ratio is absolutely critical on 4wd to protect the transmission and drive train then I'd make darn sure that they knew what they were doing when they put on different tires. They may have put on different wheels AND tires. I know enough about this 4wd ratio problem to approach that particular project with caution. Off hand, I would say that changing the ratio between front and back diameters by over 10% would be a problem. Another is that Yanmar traditionally designates their tractors with the first two numbers designating horsepower. Maybe they have changed this on the "F series" - but I would check it out to make sure the HP is not mis-represented.
What else...Oh yes, if you email me off-line I can put you in touch with a guy who has a similar tractor. ....

sorry it took so long to reply, java script error on other computer I cant figure out. anyway, I fumbled my typing first time around, R1's all around, ag tires. the seller explained the hours like this and alot of you already probably know, in Japan the goverment offers farmers incentives to buy new, usually around a 1000hours, this stimulates the economy and the tractor companies. I believe this as I have been to Japan a half dowen times or so on business as an engineer and many of my japanese friends have explained a similar situation with japans cars. Roger, I understand you not liking the paint, I will investigate further when I drive it, I have seen another with exact same painting on ebay. Danny, what would be your price for similar unit shipped to area code 94514? thanks for all the input guys! ....

Jim, It is easier to match ratios when going from rice tires to ag then from rice to turf. But the same concerns apply. A mismatch can show up as a reluctance toget it out of 4wd. But this is a judgement call as even the best tire-ratio-matched tractor will show some windup and reluctance to shift out of 4wd. especially when it is on pavement or turning.
Hope you get a chance to drive it. Yer right, the paint does annoy me. But I try not to condemn the tractor just because someone else painted it.... ....

when I say it has R1 ag tires I just mean the style-chevron bar type, I will find out if they are "rice" tires this weekend, more than likely they are still japanese tires. Like I said in my original post I've been looking for a long time and I'm not going to jump into this or any other deal till I'm sure all my ducks are in a row as they say. and I'd prefer to purchase one of the big three anyway, just looking at all options. I sure do appreciate all the good advice and comments here tho! ....
