Yes the last 990 I looked at a month ago was made by YANMAR .the 990 is very comparable to the 970 and 1070 with some minor upgrades .Yanmar has been making tractors for John Deere for about 25 years now. I had one of their first back in early 1977 , it was a 950 and it was a horse. It was such a good and reliable tractor that when it came time to replace it I bought a John Deere 790 . The only reason I didn't go with the 990 was by the time you added the loader and backhoe to the tractor price it was more than I could afford!!

have a 1993 970 and love it. I would replace it with a 990 if I needed to.
looking at specs I assumed they put the 1070 motor in the 990 and 970 motor
in the 790. Often, In my dreams, as I stop at dealers looking for 5400's
I look at the 990's and have noticed only 2 things: New (according to one
dealer also worse) loader design and a simpler right side lift arm offset adjustment turnbuckle. I personally think plastic should not be used on tractors
as much as they did on new 4000series, but I am saving for a 5400 (plastic
fenders). ....

George, I looked at a new 990 last Fall before purchasing a next to new "used" 1070. The tractors are nearly identical except for features. From what I understand the 990 has a Collar Shift transmission as opposed to the Syncromesh on the 1070. As I recall there is no mid-pto available from the factory for the 990 as well. According to my local JD dealer at the time the 990 was introduced as a less expensive alternative to the new 4000 series tractors; as the 990 was based on an "older" design. He thought the 990 would make an excellent bush-hog tractor (Someone not needing newer features such as hydrostatic transmission, direction reverser etc.) Good luck on the purchase. Regards Mark ....
