I'm currently looking at a 1988 JD950 2WD with 1,400 hours and in very good condition.Could anyone help with a reasonable value of this machine. Also, would anyone be able to offer an opinion as to the use of this tractor with a 5' Bush Hog?

Bill, I'm hoping that someone will tell me if I am way out of line here. I'm going to give a range of $6000 to $7000 for a bare tractor without implements. Power steering was optional on this tractor and is the one thing that I hope comes with it. It is still available from JD, but the cost to add it is around $1000. As for the hours, 1400 hours is not young, but it is not a detriment if the tractor is well cared for. That collarshift transmission is near bulletproof as is the 3 cylinder engine. All of these compact tractors really need 4wd to do any heavy pushing or pulling, and this one being 2wd is what really brings the price down. Yes, it should handle a 5 foot bush hog with ease. the 950 also makes a good platform for the smaller backhoes. In 4wd it would be much more capable of doing heavy work with a back blade or loader, although it will still be able do some of this kind of work in 2wd when it is well-ballasted. ....

Roger,

Thank you very much for the reply.

This tractor does not have power steering and will only be used for mowing CRP ground and possible light snow removal at times. There is no current intent to use the tractor for backhoe or loader work.

Do you feel that the lack of power steering will be detrimental to the stated use of this tractor.

Although insignificant, this tractor currently is equipped with a blade.

Bill, it ought to be fine for those uses. And used that way, the lack of power steering won't be any problem. It is only with a loader that power steering becomes a necessity. And the 650 through 1050 JD have an advantage in that power steering can be bought as a complete kit and easily installed by the owner.
Another source of information on pricing: The JD website has a "machinery finder" which lists tractors for sale by their dealers.
I've always felt that the condition rules when it comes to price. My own inclination is to be willing to pay more for documented service and good condition. The only other option that I can remember on the 950 was a sort of sun roof that mounted to the ROPS, although it must have had optional turf tires.
OH! OOPS! I just remembered that the early JD950s had transmission-driven PTOs. In fact, I don't know that they were ever offered with a live PTO. A transmission-driven PTO means that the bush hog can be powered by letting the clutch out in neutral when you are standing still, but whenever you are in gear the blade will not start to spin until the tractor begins to move. You should inspect it and judge for yourself whether this will affect your mowing. I would consider it to be a drawback on any tractor, though it is not as bad as it sounds, you just have to be willing to learn some tricks to deal with it. And it is not as convenient as a live PTO. Just another reason why the 950 - reliable though it is - does not have as high a resale as a more modern compact tractor. ....

I think 6-7K for a 950 2wd bare is quite High. I have a 4wd in unbeleiveble condition for 7700$. I just sold a2wd bare for $4900 w/ no ps. but clean. But, values are also dictated by your geographic location. Jim ....

Jim, I agree with you that prices are geographic. Mine are based on the Denver area. In general, this is a fairly affluent area financially - (somehow I missed out on that part) - with a cool dry climate. Machines tend to last a long time around here. BTW Jim, maybe we should talk about that machine you are offering - the "JD950 4wd in unbelievable condition for $7700". I think I know several people who would be interested. They are all be looking for about the same thing: moderate hours, the paint and mechanical condition they are looking for would be described as "well-cared for original", in short, an honest tractor with some wear but not abuse. It would surprise me if you couldn't sell a loader with it.
I've seen your comments over the years on a variety of forums and am aware that you seem to put a great value on keeping the price down. You sure have my support on this, and I hope you start a price revolution. I recall that you seem to be able to price things for less than most all the other dealers....I don't know how you accomplish this, but good luck in it.
Roger ....

Hey guys, my 750 2wd went with a 3 point mower for around 6k so seems like the 950 question is up to shape and how much a guy can afford. The 750 had ran a 4' woods rotary and a 6' woods finishing with no problem. Mowing crp was done to 8 acres in about 10 hours with that 4' mower. I drove slow because it was rough and the owner wanted a nice even cut. I did what I was asked since I was paid by the hour. The point is that a 950 would work great for pasture mowing and some light snow removal. And sometimes weight is better for snow than 4wd. Yes it helps, but if you can blade with a 4 wheeler then I think the 950 will too. If it's wet snow you can always hire out a time or two vs. paying for a 4wd. ....

Gentlemen:

Thank you very much for the tips and values.

The little 950 is now nestled neatly in the garage and appears to be in what I would call well above average condition. The only apparent paint wear is from the operator getting on/off, and the engine as clean as a hounds tooth.

Placing the rig in the garage was a bit of a challenge. The ROPS was too close to the top of the doors and was cropped 2" (just below the crossbar gussets)for ease of moving in and out.

It's a keeper....................thanks again. ....
