The mower belt on my 1554 keeps coming off & I've been unable to determine why. The belt is new & the deck is correctly mounted & level under the tractor. All spindles & idler pulleys are solid - no play in bearings/bushings & they all spin freely. The belt tension idler spring is fine, providing plenty of tension. I thought that the tensioning idler arm was bent down towards the deck a little but I pried it up & it appears to be level with the deck. The only thing I noticed is the belt coming off the lefthand blade spindle & the tensioning idler to the engine drive pulley runs at a bit of an upward angle, causing the belt to ride high on the tensioning idler pulley close to the upper lip of the pulley. This phenomenon is noticeable even with the deck raised to its highest position & gets more pronounced as the deck is lowered. However, even when mowing with the deck raised to its highest position in light grass offering little resistance, the belt eventually flies off. The belt won't stay on the pulleys very long at all if the deck is lowered below the highest position. This happens regardless of engine speed, ground speed or terrain. The only other observation I've made is the belt appears to wobble a lot when the mower is engaged but I can't identify a cause of this wobbling. The belt tracks fine when it's rotated manually with no catching or dragging. I even added several spacer washers under the tensioning idler pulley in an attempt to better align (raise) it with the engine drive pulley but that had no effect even though it did cause the belt to ride a bit lower on the tensioning idler pulley.

Most likely you recently changed the belt. I have a Cub 147 with a 42" deck. No aftermarket belts will properly work on a Cub. An OEM belt will work properly. The belts are more expensive but there are no other options. Good luck ....

My belt came off when I was either engaging or disengaging the lever. I noticed it would happen when I did either quickly. I now slowly push or disengage the hand lever and have not had a problem since (2years) ....

I stand corrected. I checked my receipt and I did replace the Cub Cadet belt with a genuine Cub Cadet belt, so that doesn't appear to be the issue. I have been out for 2 weeks but am going to check with my local dealer this week to see if they have any suggestions. I'll post a follow-up if I solve the problem. ....

I had the same mower and the only issue I had with the mower belts is they wore out sooner than any other mower I have owned, as in every two seasons. I got really skilled at installing the replacement belt.

Good luck, sorry I was no help. ....
