While checking over my JD 955,I noticed that the forward yoke for the drive shaft has some side play on the splined input shaft at the mfwd. I ordered a new yoke and it also seems a little loose. The aft yoke also has some play, but not as much as the front one. I cannot tell if the splined shaft is worn and at $500 for a new spline assy., I am reluctant to throw a new shaft at it if there really isn't a problem. Does anybody know how to determine if the splined shaft is worn? Does anybody know if some play is normal? I overheard some truckers talking about greasing worn splines. Is this a good idea? any comments on this subject would be appreciated. Thank You.

Apparently there isn't anyone with an opinion on this subject. For future reference, there is, indeed a small amount of side play in the interface between the driveshaft yoke and the splined input shaft to the mfwd of the JD955. I was able to locate a new shaft, and compared the play in it,as compared to the play in the one on my tractor. Personally, I feel there is enough play to warrant a high pressure lubricant such as never sieze, but the service manual doesn't call for anything. ....

I've noticed the same play with a 755 & the 855 which I preasently have. I felt it might be alittle to much play. But I think there should be some so it don't bind up when front axle is pivoting. BTW the 2 tractor's I've had have about the same amount of play. ....

Splines are typically engineered with some play in mating parts when one opposite end or the other has opportunity for movement out of centerline. Since our shaft in question is not a high speed shaft, constant lube isn't necessary, but I grease mine. ....
