Has anyone else received a letter from JD advising that the 400 series loader may have a problem thus causing them to detach from the 4000 series tractors? I received such a letter in the mail today and a promise that the necessary parts to fix the problem would be mailed to me by August 1, 2000. When cars have a recall doesn't the dealership fix the problem? Why does JD expect me to fix their problem?

I received the same letter today, and also wondered why I have to fix it.

I also received the letter. I was impressed that they bothered to take the time to inform me about a potential safety hazard and equally unimpressed (if not slightly amused) that they figured I would like to implement the fix by myself. If its their safety hazard, and it fails and injures or maims someone, then I figure they should be the liable party...not me...for installing their fix improperly. I was also troubled by the fact that they didn't even mention or imply that the dealer (any dealer) would graciously implement the fix free of charge...regardless of whether or not the equipment was still under warranty. It IS a safety problem with THEIR design...not my operation. I must confess, I'm relatively new to the tractoring world (about 35 hours) but I still can't believe that this is the way things are handled by the tractor owners and manufacturers. ....

Just a note that my dealer was unaware of the problem and had not recieved anything from deere yet. He did say that such a letter generally indicates the fix is very simple and that if I had any problem to let him know and he would be happy to help. Now this is a dealer that contacted me that he had ordered and would replace my front axle (still on order), before I contacted him. I hope my faith in this notice as an easy fix is justified (come on Deere). All in all I like the tractor and would buy another one (with the new axle). my 2 cents. ....

My dealer today indicated to me, when I inquired about this issue, that he had seen the JD bulletin and that there were a very limited number of serial numbers involved. Mike S. ....

There was nothing about serial numbers on the letter I received. In fact the letter is titled "Safety Recall for Owners of 410, 420, 430 or 460 Loaders". The letter also states "A potential safety problem on John Deere 400 Series Loaders has been identified. The loader could unexpectedly disengage from the tractor and possibly result in injury to either the operator or to a bystander". Maybe the problem is limited to certain serial numbers but that is not what the letter says. ....

Oh GOOD--now that my 4400's PTO is fixed, dash glass has been replaced, transmission's been replaced and front end has been replaced, I can be worried when I use my FEL. I wonder what little surprise is next to look forward to. (Since I have not received my letter yet, maybe I lucked out and actually missed a problem as unlikely as that is). Mike S. ....

Does anyone have a serial# list of the loaders recalled. Are they 420thru 460's
or just one size. I have a new 430 sitting at the dealership which I ordered. I'm just waiting for the JD fork attachment to arrive. I would like to check the numbers before purchasing. I would still purchase it but may choose to have him do the installation. I was planning to install it. Has anyone done it this way. If I do install it and it falls off the dealer probably wouldn't cover any damage or liability. The other hand is that I don't own a trailer or if I did, my pickup would not be able to haul it anyway. Do they ever come onsite for installations such as this? ....
