I have a John Deere 4310 with MFWD that leaks where the hub comes out of the housing. Does anyone know how to dissassemble this area to replace the hub shaft seal? It is not leaking at the main housing flange where the hub is located. Thanks!

I changed one in my 4310 last summer. Remove the wheel then take the row of bolts around the rim of the housing out. It probably will be stuck but there are a couple places to get a pry in to coax and tap it apart. Don't beat on it too hard, it looks lke a pricey thing to replace. When it comes apart you will have the outer half of the housing with a snap ring holding first the inner bearing, then the bevel gear, next a spacer, then the outer bearing. Pull all that apart and there is the seal in the outer housing. If it is like mine the new seal won't look any better than the old one but that fixed it anyway. There won't be a gasket between the two halves of the housing, just some sealant that the JD dealer has. It's kind of a pain to use the sealant, everything has to be spotless clean or it won't seal. You put some of the sealant on the outside of the new seal before installing it also. It really isn't a hard job, just kind of messy because there isn't a drain plug on the bottom of the housing so just put a pan under it for the oil to catch in. ....

Thanks for the great info hardwood! Are there any things I should know about the JD 4310 in particular? I bought it last week...it is a 2004 rental unit with 2000 hours. It's well used, but not beat up. The 430 loader is pretty loose but I already have that off and apart. I will build up the worn areas where it mounts with hardfacing weld and maybe think about bushing the pins. ....

I forgot to say welcome to the form, we try our best to help out, sometimes we can and sometimes not, but we try, and a bit of humor now and then is fine too.
Other than the front seal I haven't had anything only a new battery and regular maintenence. Last summer when the seal started leaking my first thought was that the bearings were bad being I've never had the loader off and the loader has moved lots and lots of dirt and snow, but they were fine. Other than the seal so far so good, all the electronics kind of scared me but again so far so good.
I probably change oil and filters twice for every scheduled maintenece period in the owners manual, but my thought has always been the oil, filters, grease, etc, are free compared to repairs.
Whether it is my Chevy pickup, Trailblazer SUV, Farmall tractors, or our Deere 4310, mowers, Gator, etc. I've always been a firm believer in using the filters, oil, etc., that the owners manual calls for. If they didn't think their oils and filters were good enough I doubt they would recommend them, they don't want your equipment wearing out prematurely any more than you do.
