I'm plannng to buy a 30HP 4WD compact diesel tractor and use it primarily for finish mowing, so I'm getting the turf tires. I also plan to use it for gardening and am wondering what kind of garden implements others are using on their compact diesels. Do any of you folks use plows, subsoilers, disks, tillers, etc? If so, what size and how much weight do you need to add to the tractor? Since I'll have the turf tires, I'm planning to get chains for doing the plowing and/or subsoiling, has anybody tried this? Thanks.

Danny I purchased my JD 4400 in December. I have a subsoiler that I used on the garden early this spring. I purchased a 56" King Kutter II tiller. With all the showers we have had latley I have not had a chance to use it yet. Chris ....

Danny, The tiller is the most expensive, but most used and valuable implement for a vegetable garden. A moldboard plow is nice to use before the tiller, if you're starting a new, previously uncultivated, plot. Then I use a cultivator plow, 6 field sweeps, after the plants are up and growing. I also use a double buster to dig potatos fast at harvest time, and even the onions if the ground is hard and dry at the time. ....

Thanks for the info. Could you educate me a little more? What is a moldboard plow, a cultivator plow, 6 field sweeps, and a double buster? I grew up on a farm and we had a plow, a disk, a drag, and cultivators. I've heard of some of those things you mentioned, but don't know what they are. Thanks.

Danny, I use chains on my turf tires when I want extra traction. It works just as well as you think that it would for increasing ptraction. You can leave the chains on most of the time if you want....the tractor doesn't wear them or the tires like an automobile does. My first set were made from old car chains, and give a very bouncy ride. I made a set for my other tractor using an "X" pattern instead of the common automotive pattern, and this gives a much nicer ride. Traction is about the same either way. I wouldn't want anymore traction. I think it is good that a tire can slip if it needs to so because this protects the rest of the running gear. ....
