How much does the draw bar horse power drop on an HST tractor as compared to a gear drive tractor. I am looking at buying a JD4300 or Kub L3010 to pull a 6 or 7 foot 3pthitch cultivator. I have about 2 full acres to cultivate. I notice that PTO HP drops about 1HP on an Hst vs gear. Will these tractors do the job?

Drawbar horsepower is proportional to drawbar pull times forward velocity. Thus it is a function of soil conditions, ballast, as well as power delivered from the engine. In other words, it is not a property of the tractor you can measure and it stays constant. The most reliable means of comparing power of two different tractors is to use PTO-HP. PTO-HP of a hydro is usually about 1-2 HP less than on a gear compact tractor. If the vast majority of the work you do is plugging along at one constant speed, then you will save a bit of fuel with a gear. On the other hand, if you do a significant amount of work that requires jockeying around like using a loader and mowing around trees or buildings, the hydro is better suited for the convenience in operation it provides. With regard to your "cultivator" question, can you please describe exactly what you mean. The term is applied rather loosely to a wide variety of implements. High draft load or not? Used in untilled or tilled soil? Used to remove weeds from between row crops? What tractor do you use to pull your cultivator today? ....

Thanks for your reply Jack. The land I want to cultivate is already broken. It gets seeded to wheat every second year. The soil is a heavier clay not sandy at all. I could use a rotortiller attachment however that would pulverize the soil to much and it would blow away in the wind. It would also take to long to do. I just want to take the weeds out when they are small. I would have to do it 3 or 4 times a summer. I would only have to work it about 2 inches deep to do that. So I am wondering if the JD4300 or the Kub L3010 both with HST would have the power to do it (pull that 6 or 7 foot 3pt cultivator with six inch shovels spaced ever six inches). Or would the gear version of each be better. I am thinking that gear is a direct linkage to the wheels so more positive than the fluid drive of an Hst, therefore more efficient both power and fuel use wise. Fuel use is not a conscern with me. I just want to be able to get the job done and I am hoping the hst version will do it as I would prefer this for the loader and mowing work it would be doing the other 80 % of the time. ....

I don't think you will have any problem with a hydro for this. To verify this for yourself why not rent a hydro for a half day and do it. ....
